Bluebeard's Castle Resort
Reviewed 26 March 2014

This is our 3rd stay at Bluebeard's Castle. In the past we have stayed in Hilltop II and Villas I West Wing. Although we loved the views and locations of those units, we love Pirates Pension more. My husband and I have a studio that seems more spacious than the one in Hilltop. We have a washer/dryer in the unit and a magnificent view of the cruise ships and harbor. We are in the Galleon Building, unit 406. Our patio is extremely private and our location feels remote.

We love being within walking distance to Charlotte Amalie and enjoying lunch at Bumpa's. The restaurant's here on sight are the best on the island. The Banana Tree Grill has a fantastic Wedge salad and several yummy entrees. Room with a View has a great Happy Hour with $5.00 wine and appetizers. The Cabana Grill has really stepped it up and has fantastic, reasonably priced food. We have also enjoyed a wonderful piano player who plays your requests. Life's a Breeze is also a great little poolside restaurant to have breakfast or lunch. Reasonably priced too.

We have decided with just the two of us, we don't need to rent a car. It's a break even deal. We'd rather not have the liability and be able to go out and enjoy ourselves downtown and other places. We can walk downtown during the day and take a cab back at night. We had rented a car for the week for $312. We cancelled it. We have been here 4 days so far and spent $100 on cab fare. That includes getting here from the airport. If there are 4 of you, the car rental is a far better value.

We love Coki Beach, as the snorkeling is fabulous and watching the locals is pure entertainment. It was a bit crowded on Monday with cruise ships in. Today we are headed to Bolongo Bay. Next year we are returning with 2 other couples. We love it here!

Room Tip: Pirates Pension is a great place to stay in Bluebeard's Castle!

This is a beautiful resort with a fantastic view of Charlotte Amalie and a section of the waterfront. The view is even better at nights. We got a room on the second floor of the West Wing which was good. Most of the rooms have a fairly decent view of the waterfront area. The sun setting over the mountain in the evenings was also great to photograph.
Studio was kind of small for four adults, best suited for 2 adults and 2 kids. Pull out sofa needs some work but it would have been nice if 2 queens size beds were in the room, something management should think about. The king size took up too much space. King is good for couple without kids. However, the room was clean and amenities in good condition.
The only negative was that Wi-Fi was not free. The staff at the resort were very helpful and always tried to resolve whatever problems or answer any questions you had.

The resort is located between Charlotte Amalie and Havensite (the cruise ship port), both within walking distance for physically fit individuals. Shopping and restaurants are plentiful in these areas along with parking. Just be careful where you park, the rules are not clear.

The grounds are well kept with wild life roaring around, iguanas, cats, chickens and mister rooster. Roosters on the island don't seem to know what time to crow for they start at 2:30AM. Could be annoying at times.
Restaurants at the resort are pretty good with varying prices, all on the high side in my opinion. Breakfast items could be purchased at K-Mart or Pueblo which are nearby and prepared in the Studio's mini kitchen.

Taxis are kind of expensive when you travel around the island since they charge you per person. Rent a 4x4, forget about the small cars at the car rental services. The island is small, roads mostly one lane with very little sighting distance, steep hills and some hairpin bends. The small can barely get to the top and you have to be leaning forward to see what is ahead of you.

We visited the beach at Megans Bay. Beautiful beach but very crowded due to the arrival of several cruise ship passengers. It is advisable to check in the lobby for cruise ship arrivals if you want to be on the beach when it is not too crowded. Visited Bolongo Beach which was not crowded but the water was very rough and not good for snorkeling. Megan and Bolongo beaches are not the greatest for snorkeling. Coki beach and trunk bay beach in St. John's were great for both swimming and snorkeling, an abundance of fish and corrals to see.
Restaurants are great throughout the island but pricey. We had dinner at few of the really good ones like The Green House in Charlotte waterfront, Fish Tail in red hook, room with a view at Bluebeards castle resort and Hook, Line and Sinker, waterfront also. All very good.
It is advisable you rent a car, preferably a jeep. Due yo the hilly nature of the island, narrow and steep roads with hairpins bends and very little sighting distance, a small car is a disaster waiting to happen. They could nearly climb the hilly roads, they occasionally roll Bach on you on the really steep hills.
A trip to St. John's is a must. Here again, when boarding the ferry, the small car underside comes into contact with the metal ramp and could take your exhaust out. Trunk bay and cinnamon bay beaches are a must, white sand with gentle slope and crystal clear water.
The extreme zip line tour is a must do, best I have ever done with long and rapid decends. The final leg is the best, prepare yourself for a surprise

Room Tip: Rooms on the south sides are quieter with a great view. Get one higher up.

Dear sbhagwandin,

Thank you so much for writing and for sharing your thoughts on your visit here.

I agree the location of the Castle gives the most outstanding harbor and town views from any resort on the Island.

We truly appreciate your comment "The staff at the resort were very helpful and always tried to resolve whatever problems or answer any questions you had."

My wife and I spent a week plus a few additional days here in Villas I. Facilities are all well appointed and super clean. Rooms are beautiful and also very clean, comfortable and quiet. Beds are very comfortable and plenty of hot water for showering etc. Staff is terrific. Very responsive and helpful especially D'reen at activities desk. She set up tours for us to Tortola and Hassel Island. The Hassel Island tour is conducted by the Historic Society and is excellent.
We had a few minor issues which were addressed ASAP when we called maintenance. The restaurants and pool bar are all wonderful with great service, great happy hour pricing for economy nights and great entertainment, especially Dennis crooning on the piano at the Cabana Bar.
You just can't match the views from the Castle.
Timeshares are available here at a very reasonable price. Well worth looking into.

Back from our 2 weeks in St Thomas, the resort is looking good. The parking lots and drives are now fully paved, the old original castle has been restored, solar panels on roofs are generating $30,000 worth of electric every month. You would think the next step would be to warm up the frigid pool!

The chickens were still there in February, they never really bothered us on the east side of the resort but a lot of people complain so they have someone rounding them up and letting them go somewhere else on the island.

Room Tip: Some rooms have very little closet space (villas 3 rm 208), About 18 inches wide with a wall safe an...

Don't confuse this with Bluebeard's Beach & Villas. Located in town, it is difficult to find. Directions provided by Mapquest are correct...but the road signs are missing. Once you get through town look for the tower (don't confuse it with Blackbeard's Tower). Then follow the road to the top of the hill.

Dear DrWJW,

We appreciate the valuable feedback you provided, at times people do mistake the Beach Club for the Castle as both have the name Bluebeard's.

If you are heading out of town you have gone by the Castle as the Beach Club is located outside of town.

To all guests please call us at 1-340-774-1600 and we will guide you to the Castle.

We look forward to your next visit.

I am an owner of a week #8, Villa II unit and have witnessed the "GREAT" transition of Bluebeard's Castle, BBC, Resort from a resort in trouble to a truly "GREAT RESORT". The most positive addition has been the addition of the Solar Panels. Keeping up with the 21st Century by going "GREEN" is a positive move all-a-round. The SPM management and Board of Directors/Presidents team have obviously put their hearts and soles into making BBC a "GREAT" place to both vacation and own one again. I brought guests with me this year who have never been to BBC. They were astounded by the Resort and it's Staff. The restaurants values, "HAPPY HOUR," were priced fair and fun. The main entree's were prepared to perfection. The pool/Jacuzzi were cleaned daily. The rooms were clean. The Activities staff person was friendly and extremely knowledgeable and helpful. We loved the Catamaran snorkle trip.

So, all in all, I loved my vacation time at BBC week #8, 2014, as did my guests. "NO SNOW" :)

Thank you SPM and Board of Directors/Presidents.

Room Tip: Travelers should CALL BBC staff for up to date reservations.
