Emerald Beach Resort

Stayed here for 10 days over Christmas. Even though the hotel is older, the rooms are clean and decently appointed. The hotel sits right on the sand, and has a good restaurant and great bar. The food is a little pricey, but the bar is cheap and offers enough food to keep you on the premises. The only negative you may encounter is the distance from the main shopping/tourist area. It is about 3 miles into town, and though a reasonably active person could walk, the safari type taxis run continuously and charge $1-$2 dollars. Think open air van that seats 12. Meet people, make friends, enjoy the spirit of the island while technically being in the U.S. Phone service is the same as in the continental U.S., and if you can adapt to island time you are set for a wonderfully relaxing vacation. The "4" rating is due to the distance from town but is really isn't that bad of a jaunt. Take an extra suitcase as you will want to bring back your full allotment (6) of rum at only $7.50 a litre!

We took our 21-year-old daughter to St. Thomas for a birthday trip and stayed at the Emerald Beach Best Western. The beach was beautiful and definitely the top draw of the resort. Our room was clean and comfortable. We ate at the on-site restaurant and beach bar several times. The food was average to good, but the staff and service were SLOW! Pleasant, but definitely not timely according to American travelers' expectations. The location is convenient to the airport; maybe a little too convenient if you're bothered by plane noise. The airport location is not convenient if you want to spend time shopping downtown or exploring other areas of the island. You need to take a taxi, which are expensive, or take a chance on the "public transportation". We did both. The public transportation was a unique sometimes gut-wrenching experience with locals and tourists jammed into the safari-like vans and drivers driving like crazy people, but it did get us where we needed to go. Not for the faint of heart. Overall, a beautiful beach and nice hotel at a reasonable price. We would like to stay somewhere more centrally-located next time, but we wouldn't hesitate to return to Emerald Beach.

Previous reviewers have remarked on how beautiful the beach at this hotel is, and they were right. It's awesome. The views from the balcony, especially from the 3rd floor are spectacular, especially at sunset. The back of the hotel faces the beach and looks south so you get maximum sun exposure as the sun moves from east to west. The beach and water are very clean. On the downside, it is a public beach and when the cruise ships are in port, up to 6 or 7 at time (think 20,000+ people descending on a small island), the beach can get very crowded (TIP: look on-line for the cruise ship schedule and if there are more than 2 ships that day, get on the beach before 9:00 to get a chair and a good spot).

The hotel is dated, looks like it was built in the 70s. You're lucky if you have decent water pressure so don't count on taking a great shower. Watch out for mosquitoes, they're plentiful. (TIP: when you get to your room, make sure the bathroom window is closed tight - I didn't realize this for 2 days and all the while was wondering why there were 3 or 4 mosquitoes a night in the bathroom - they don't have screens on the windows - bring bug spray with you).

The hotel staff is very nice and responsive. We had an issue with the safe in the room and they sent someone up right away to fix it. Everyone is super friendly. For some reason they were towel challenged the week we were there, frequently only giving us 2 towels when we had 4 in the room. One night it took 2 hours to get the additional towels. They are probably understaffed. (TIP: request a room in building 2 or 3 when you book it, as they are farther from the bar where loud music is played at night)

The restaurant is pretty good, but pricey. The Friday night buffet was $28/person and was excellent. Avoid the Sunday brunch, not worth $35/person. Eating at the bar is a cheaper option and the food is decent, burgers, etc., but still plan on at least $50 or $60 for lunch not including drinks. The restaurant staff is excellent, friendly and attentive, and the views are great. There aren't many eating options from this hotel besides their restaurant and bar. The Beachcomber Hotel next door also has a restaurant which is OK. (TIP: the dinner menu is very limited so ask for the bar menu, they don't offer this at first). They have different breakfast selections than the Best Western restaurant.

The hotel isn't near anything and is too far from town to walk. We were told by multiple locals not to try and walk to town at night, that it isn't safe. We didn't have a car and had to resort to taking taxis. These are expensive and charge by the person. The government set rate to go into town (2 miles) is $6/person. We got some drivers to do it for $4/person although they're not supposed to do this. I would rent a car (they drive on the left hand side) if I went again, there's plenty of parking space at the hotel. Without a car it would cost a small fortune to tour the island on your own, go to St John or BVI, etc. The airport is next door and you do hear an occasional 757 taking off or landing but this is not an annoyance. Charlotte Amalie has the typical tourist type shops and lots of jewelry stores. It's safe to walk around town, but don't stray too far from the main shopping area.

There aren't many non-water attractions or activities at or near the hotel. We took a Tropic Tours tour of the island ($49/person) that picked us up at the hotel and was pretty good, and included an $11 banana daiquiri at one of the stops. (TIP: If you plan on going for more than 3 or 4 days and want to do more than lay on the beach, consider renting a car for more flexibility - you can also then buy food, water and snacks from the local grocery store to save some money on food costs)

Your AT&T Wireless phone will work from here with no additional charges for roaming, voice, text or data. The signal from the hotel is excellent (3 or 4 bars of LTE on an iPhone 5). We only had one day where the service was not working for 10 or 15 minutes. When there are a lot of ships in port the data service does tend to slow down a bit.

Room Tip: ask for building 2 or 3 which is away from the bar area

We have stayed at this hotel many times for 2 weeks in a row. It is like coming home when we arrive. The staff are friendly and accommodating and go out of their way to give great service. Our room was clean and air conditioning worked great. Sharene, Jewel, and Tiffany. The housekeeping staff were great especially Annette. Joel was readily available when we had a concern and made us feel very at home. The food in the bar and restaurant was tasty and good value. Tony the bartender was efficient and always asking us about our day. The pool area is relaxing and well maintained. My only negative is I wish they had a microwave in the rooms. When you stay for 2 weeks like we do it would be nice to be able to warm up the leftovers from the restaurants we frequent.

Room Tip: rooms are all ocean view but no elevator.

Great location..walking distance from the airport. Taxis are expensive in VI, and walking from the airport to the hotel was a huge plus for us. Planes arrive and depart every half an hour, but they do not disturb the peacefulness of the hotel, probably because they are small planes and even the few big ones like AA or a United cannot be heard so much from the hotel. Personally, I love planes so for me it was an amazing experience to see them in the air from such a short distance.
The hotel has beautiful passage ways covered in lush vegetation and flowers that connect the different buildings, restaurant, bar, pool area and the beach.
The view from the room was phenomenal. All rooms overlook the blue-emerald waters of the ocean and are only a few feet away from the shore. You can even hear the sound of the calm water when you are inside the room...you may want to spend some time at the balcony reading a book, listening to your ipod or just getting carried away by the horizon and the sounds of paradise. The beach is so relaxing..no loud noises and not crowded at all. The sand is soothing and the tranquility of the water makes you wanna stay at the beach under the palm trees all day long.
The bar is located in the middle of the hotel and right in front of the beach and next to the pool. They play great music (again, not loud) and drinks are superb. You can sit on one of the stools at the bar, have a drink and chat with other people or just breath the purity of the air and..sigh. The restaurant offers delicious and abundant meals..yes, it's a bit pricey but totally worth every single dollar. You may seat inside or outside..either way the view is fantastic and soothing.
My only complaint is housekeeping. Apparently, they have some issues with towels, both for the room and for the beach. They run out of towels super fast and sometimes they even forget to replace the towels in the room. Also, make sure not to bring too much sand into the room because there is no broom and the cleaning people do not really sweep the floor. The bed and bathroom are ok and in general the rooms are nicely equipped (TV, AC, desk, chairs, coffee machine, etc).

Overall, this is a great option: location, beach, room, food, view. I don't give it 5 stars because of the average room service and the towel-gate! Otherwise, excellent hotel in a beautiful island (make sure to take a taxi to Magens bay -one of the best beaches in the world- and Mountain Top!! You won't regret it!).

this is the second time at this resort for christmas and we love it here. The resort is located on a beautiful beach great for swimming or just lounging around with a cocktail, our favorite is a pain killer from the beach bar.All the bartenders are great and make a good drink and the food is good at the restaurant. This time we were on the second floor, instead of the third, and the views were still amazing,we like to just sit on the balcony with a drink and watch the time pass. The grounds are very well maintained and the room is kept clean witch is very important to us.If your used to 5star resorts and butler service this isn't your place, but if you want 5star views and beach in a clean room for a 3star price, this is the place, the wife and I cant wait to get back again.

Room Tip: 2nd floor and up for views.

I checked in and was asked if I had a preference of which floor I'd like to be on. I asked for the third floor for a view and boy, was I thrilled when I got to the room. The room was clean, well appointed, had free wi-fi, a desk with a comfortable office chair, fridge, comfortable beds, air conditioner that worked very well and a fabulous little balcony with an amazing view. At night I cracked the door so I could listen to the waves crashing on the beach.

One day housekeeping skipped cleaning my room, but I had plenty of towels, coffee, etc., so it wasn't a huge deal.

The restaurant was very good with reasonable rates. They had a buffet one night that several people in my party had and we all agreed it was fabulous. Very good island fare, especially the shrimp, beef and plantains. Other nights I had pasta with salad, conch fritters and a pizza. Very good. I enjoyed eating outside at the bar - the bartenders were a lot of fun and one of them made drinks "Cocktail" style by flipping the bottles in the air. I also ate breakfast there most mornings - usually French toast and sausage, which was average.

I didn't get to spend much time on the beautiful beach as I was there for work, but I loved the little grass umbrellas and the beach chairs were good quality. The beach was clean and beautiful and never overly crowded. I did make my way out to the ocean each night before bed to just float on my back in the warm waters and look at the stars - it was very peaceful and felt very safe.

There was a small, nice, jam-packed gift shop where I purchased a beautiful beach cover-up and it was a nice place to get souvenirs if you needed them.

The pool was quite beautiful and very clean, but it opened quite late and closed quite early so I didn't have a chance to use it. I would have loved to have gone for an early morning swim in it before starting the day.

Room Tip: Third floor rooms in the westernmost building had a fabulous view. They were happy to haul my lugga...
