Emerald Beach Resort
Reviewed 11 July 2010

We chose the Emerald Beach Resort to have are destination wedding at it was perfect! Although we were there for the day as a shore excursion from are cruise ship, we cannot wait to go back next year for vacation! The property was beautiful, with tropical plants lining every walkway and then you step into paradise as you walk out onto the beach ! The resort had restaurant, pool, bar and gift shop, but if you felt the need to venture out it is a short drive into town with lots of choices of places to go. We can't wait to go back to St. Thomas and for those looking to get married there, we recommend using Fantasia Weddings. They take every measure to deliver a perfect wedding!

The Good
1. All rooms have balcony and beach front view.
2. Very close to the water.
3. 10-minute walk from the airport.
4. Spacious and clean room
5. Helpful Staff
6. Fast Service
7. Gorgeous beach, white sand, clear water
8. We were given an extra hour to check out.
9. Beach towels available for guests anytime of the day
10. Not a lot of mosquito (June)

The Bad
1. Extra charge for in-room safe
2. Bathroom has no proper ventilation, no water pressure and very old & rusty shower head
3. Bathroom window is too small and the knob was broke so we couldn’t open it.
4. Not enough TV channels and bad TV signal
5. Building looks a little run down from the outside
6. Some nights there were gatherings in a gazebo next to the hotel. Loud music and loud people = no sleep
7. The room has absolutely no sound proofing.
8. Check in at 4pm.
9. Security cameras seem to be inoperable
10. Breakfast buffet: not enough selection and very expensive

The Ugly
1. There’s a power plant up the hill next to the hotel. We saw a truck dumping something off the cliff and directly below was a big rock with light brown stain. I think whatever it is their dumping up there is going straight into the water. The water seemed fine though so maybe I'm just being paranoid.
2. Noise can be heard coming from the power plant during the day.
3. Homeless people and locals roam around freely in the hotel premises and on the beach.

Tips
1. Rent a car if possible.
2. If you’re on a budget check out the local grocery store called Pueblo. They also have K-Mart and McDonalds. Dominos Pizza offer great deals and they deliver.
3. If you’re looking for a place to eat, try to avoid Marriott. Too expensive and very little serving. To top it all the service is horrible.
4. Try to avoid the Fat Turtle as well. It's located in Yacht Haven Grande. We made a reservation and requested a specific table. When we came there were people sitting in our table and the "greeter" lady who took our reservation told us that they've been sitting there for a while and she didnt expect them to stay there that long. We were tired so we decided to stay and sit at another table. After we placed our order, we saw them bring food out to the same people the "greeter" lady said would be leaving in a few minutes.
5. There are no flights at night so close proximity to the airport won’t be a problem unless you sleep pass 9 or 10am.
6. We stayed here in June so the beach was not crowded and the temperature was perfect. The downside was it rained more than we hoped. I can only assume staying here during peak season will eliminate some of the good and amplify some of the bad things about this hotel. Not to mention air traffic.
7. If you see cruise ships docked in Charlotte Amalie, try to avoid going anywhere especially downtown. Small Island and small roads = crowded places and heavy traffic. The only problem is all the shops seem to close after the cruise ships leave (except on weekends) so plan accordingly.
8. Almost everything is expensive throughout the island

We are forced to use the Emerald Beach because of the odd ferry schedule to the BVI and its lack of coordination with the plane schedule. The hotel is not bad but there are way too many steps, a pain if one has a dog and is staying just one night. The restaurant is a total abomination: they can't cook even pasta, bread is extra, and the prices are obscene.

To the left of the beach on a hill is a loud plant with a smoke stack that is constantly running and putting out black smoke. If the wind blows towards the hotel, you get covered in the smoke. To the right, is another hotel and next to it is a public park. It is dirty and usually has gatherings of loud people with LOUD music. There is no peace and quiet.
The water is beautiful.
The beach is a public beach and whatever you do, do not get a room on the first floor. Anyone can climb right over your railing and come right into your room if your balcony door is not bolted. Even the second floor rooms can be accessed by a quick climb.
It is a sad fact but there were homeless people (2) sleeping on the beach while we were there. On the right end of the hotel there are tents set up for the staff as a break area. We were in room 1206 which was right above this area and on a few nights, the two men slept in that area and smoked. This all came right into the room. The staff was aware of them staying in there as one morning I listened as they were told to "take their time but to go ahead and get going". I feel for them really but if the staff wants to help them, how about they take them home and not give them shelter 15 feet away from where I just spent 1000.00 to stay after working my butt off all year to save for? Had I known they were there I would stayed somewhere else and given them a hundred bucks. At least I would have been able to sleep with the balcony door open. The one man was on the beach two different days trying to hit on the women there and would run off when a man in the woman’s party would come around.
Do not even think of trying to check in before 4pm, it will not happen. Beach bar needs to be scrubbed with bleach and the trash dumped.
Plus side: The woman who cleaned the room was a sweetheart.

James and I traveled to St Thomas in the Virgin Islands with approximately 15 people for our wedding ceremony in June. The resort was simply amazing :) Ishani and her staff were nothing less than PHENOMINAL! We would highly recommend this resort to anyone wanting to stay in the Virgin Islands and or as venue for a wedding.

Ishani .... Thank you so much to you and your staff! You made our wedding day and stay more than we could ever have dreamed of :) xoxoxoxoxo

The people are rude, the service is slow, and with the exception of Red Hook, we felt very unsafe on the island of St. Thomas. We booked our trip through Expedia and had a confirmation showing we were supposed to be in a room with a King bed. Tamara checked us in and made no mention that they were not honoring our request. After viewing the room, my husband went back down and was told that expedia had no idea what went on at their hotel and all they had to do was give us a room. We contacted Expedia, who had no better luck getting our reservations honored. Our first room was infested with mosquitos, and the manager did finally agree to move us to another room on the third floor. We got away from the mosquitos, but this room had ants everywhere! It took us almost 3 hours to get washcloths our first night there. The water pressure was nonexistent and the water smelled like a bottle of bleach. We would never stay here again! In fact, we will never stay on St. Thomas again. The only saving grace to this trip was taking the ferry over to St. John. Trunk Bay & Cinnamon Bay were great.

Tomorrow ends our 11 day stay at Best Western EB here on St. Thomas. This was a senior trip for my daughter who just graduated from high school. We took a tour over to St John today, and as we stopped at several different hotels on this island to pick up passengers, it became very clear to me that we chose the best hotel. We are right on the beach...our balcony is just a stones throw from the water. The rooms a nice, very clean, and quiet. The staff here is extremely nice and helpful. The food at the restaurant here is wonderful. It may seem a little pricey (depending on where you're from and what you're use to), but EVERYTHING here on the island is more expensive that what we are use to (a gallon of milk here is over $6). We went to the KMart at TuTu Mall and got breakfast items to help cut the eating out expense. We enjoyed Sushi at Beni Iguana's at the Havensight Mall. You can book at trip to St. John at the hotel...I think we used Island Tours. It was great and Charles, our tour guide, was very informative. We got and awesome history lesson.
We are almost within walking distance to the airport. The noise from the planes is not big deal during the day and I do not think they fly during the night. If they do, they did not disturb our sleep.
If you want to catch a taxi, you want to get the $1 taxis. They are trucks converted into taxis...the beds are covered and there are bench seats. You have to ask (or just hold up 1 finger) if they are $1. Taxi fare can get really expensive if you take a regular taxi.
St. Thomas has KFC, Pizza Hut, Wendy's, and McDonalds as well as many fine restaurants.
