I ended up having to stay over the weekend for a Monday meeting in St. Thomas and made a last minute search for a hotel in Charlotte Amalie. Fortunately, I found the Mafolie Hotel. It is a bit of a throw back to a by-gone era where great service and wonderful ambiance were combined and offered effortlessly, as opposed to the contrived feeling that you get from a modern resort property. Mafolie is a real home for the owners and the staff, some of whom even gather for the evening at the bar after their work day because there just is no better place to hang out and chill in Charlotte Amalie. The Mafolie advertises an "Incomparable View" and they are right. From virtually every vantage point the view is of the Caribbean from the height of the hilltop surrounding Charlotte Amalie. The sea sweeps away from you, islands and boats dotting the harbor like candles in the night. In the day, the view remains extraordinary, but the trade winds blow gently and I found no need to even turn on the air conditioning thus saving the owners money because electricity is costly in St. Thomas. The atmosphere at the bar is a perfect blend of relaxed people from all over chatting amiably. The food is excellent and many of the patrons of the restaurant come from the Frenchman's Reef Marriott just to get a great meal.

This hotel is not for everyone. It clings to the hillside and those with issues walking may find that the steps to get to the pool (also a gem, by the way) or the restaurant are a bit of a challenge. For those wanting resort activities, this is not that sort of place. No beach volleyball or tour director. This is a true family owned and operated Caribbean Hotel. But for anyone who appreciates the sort of atmosphere that might easily have attracted Hemingway if he ever visited St. Thomas (I need to research that one) or Jimmy Buffett who definitely reports that he often hung out at the Mafolie Bar when he visited St. Thomas in his youth - this is your hang out. When in St. Thomas do not miss it.

Room Tip: All of the rooms seem to face the sea. Those with issues walking may want to request a room on the...

Came to island for 5 days to visit my daughter during busy Valentine's week with many weather delays in states. When other hotels were unwilling to try to accommodate, Mafolie worked to fit me in. Hotel has a nice local feel with informative, kind & helpful staff that truly care about your well being. I was even offered a ride at one point during my stay when the front clerk was on her way to her doctor. {{hugs}} to Ella for making each morning special with her smile, conversation & kind spirit....oh and can't forget delicious smoothies. Will book again

Stopped for one night on the way to Tortola for a yacht charter vacation.
Mafolie turned out to be a great place to relax, fabulous location with great views over the bay.
Service was friendly and the restaurant and bar just right without being too formal.
Our room overlooked he pool convenient but still quiet at night.
A short cab ride to town, ferry etc.

We also were stuck in St Thomas in January. We looked for a hotel away from the central part of town which was very commercial. We found Ma Folie and couldn't have been happier with our choice!
We were welcomed and first given their economy room, which was OK. After two days we were switched to a lovely room with a small sitting courtyard area looking over the town of Charlotte Amalie, just beautiful! It cost the same as the economy room.
The owners were exceptionally helpful in every way. If we wanted help they gave it too us immediately. We also had one problem with the toilet, which they fixed as soon as we told them.
They also gave us a gift because of the toilet problem(a bottle of rum).
The hotel has a warm family feel, we felt like cherished guests.
Every night we had dinner in the restaurant because it simply was the best restaurant in Charlotte Amalie.

Stranded in STT as result of JFK closed for two days we looked into alternative places to stay. Taxied up to the Mafolie to have breakfast and wait to hear if we were flying today. We were to late for a cooked breakfast but the owner Adam invited us to the take advantage of the Continental breakfast that was still available (at NO charge!) We enjoyed the view, breakfast sandwiches and juice. Alerted by the airline that we are a "go" to fly out and did not stay here. Our point is, when treated with such hospitality our next return to STT will make the Mafolie a sure destination.

Room Tip: A wonderful family owned small business.

It was a pleasure meeting and chatting with you. We consider ourselves not only ambassador's for The Mafolie Hotel & Restaurant but also for St Thomas and the entire Virgin Islands. When people are distressed visiting our islands we do our best to make them feel like they have family and friends on this island whether they join us for an entire vacation or just breakfast. Glad to hear you made it home safely.

This hotel sits on a hill right over a road where trucks and cars pass right under the windows. It was very noisy. Later in the night we hear sirens and traffic from lower on the hill. The rooms are extremely modest for the price and I had bites all over me the next morning. I suspect bed bugs.

By way of comparison, we stayed at 2 other places during our 3 weeks in the VI's both of which were considerably lower in cost, quieter, cleaner, roomier and on beaches. I would never stay at the Mafolie again.

The restaurant is independently operated and has a great view and great food. Go to the restaurant and forget this hotel.

Hello. I own and operate both the hotel and the restaurant. While I am sorry you did not enjoy your stay with us I am glad you enjoyed our restaurant. I wish you would have brought to our attention your dissatisfaction during your stay as we could have addressed the issues and maybe had made your time here more enjoyable.
Our hotel has a world famous view and is located high above the city and port of Charlotte Amalie. While yes, our hotel is located on a street, the street leads to primarily residential neighborhoods and it’s our experience that traffic at night is extremely light. Occasionally there are sirens in the city below but we are located high and far enough away that it’s barely noticeable if at all in our rooms.
We take bedbugs very seriously and are proactive about ensuring they are not at our property. We train our housekeepers to look for any signs of bedbugs. We also have all rooms treated monthly by pest control specialists. We have NEVER had an incident of bedbugs at this property.
Furthermore according to the Center for Disease Controls (CDC) website “Most people do not realize they have been bitten until bite marks appear anywhere from one to several days after the initial bite.” If you were bitten by bedbugs I would highly doubt it was at our hotel.
With that being said we are thoroughly inspecting all rooms and scheduling an extra treatment from our pest control contractors. If you would like to contact me directly regarding this matter please free to email or call the hotel. Again I am sorry you did not enjoy your stay with us and we will use this as an opportunity to get better.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights and really liked this place. You will need to rent a car to get anywhere on the island as this is in the hills, not near the beach. They have a very nice pool that you can oversee the entire town of Charlotte. Continential breakfast was the best one we had on the entire trip. The onsite restaurant was very yummy with authentic local cuizine.

I would stay here again and recommend it for anyone to save some money, not be on the beach, but have the best views on the island.

Room Tip: All rooms seem to have a good view, since built on the side of a hill, not good for someone who can...
