“Nice View, Unique rooms, Great Staff”
Reviewed 19 May 2014

We were very pleased to stay here in a room that overlooked the pool and the downtown area below. It's up the hill a little bit so the downtown area is a about 5 - 10 minutes away by taxi, but that provided a great vista to wake up to every morning and it is more or less centrally located to other attractions on the Island.

This isn't the Ritz, but we preferred this as the rooms were clean, spacious and had unique character. Restaurant was great and the staff was amazingly helpful. Chad, Lisa and Katya (hope I got that right) were all very knowledgeable about the area and willing to help us have a pleasant stay. Adam, the owner, even drove us up to a hiking spot in the area on a whim, so they are really willing to go the extra mile for their guests.

Room Tip: I've heard people complain about the traffic, but we didn't experience this as we had a room...

Good Day d g. This is Chad from the front desk. Thanks for the kind words! It was nice to meet you guys while you were here and it's always fun to give directions and suggestions to people who have an idea of what they are looking to experience -- i.e. the hiking trail down to Magan's Bay is a great experience rarely had by travelers.

So, thanks again! Give us a call when you need another life refresher.

We stayed at the Mafolie before and after our trip to St. John. Our first night we were close to the road and could have used some ear plugs. Second night we were on a lower level which was very quiet. Staff is very helpful and friendly. Love the restaurant! Sure, the place is a little funky and rough around the edges, but that is fine with us. Views are incredible and the price is affordable. I like that there's a laptop for staff to use to check in and print boarding passes. Very helpful. I would stay there again.

I selected the Mafolie for two reasons: the view and the central location. For that, I had no disappointment. In addition, almost every staff member I encountered was tuned in to guest services. (The young man in the front office on Friday and Saturday helped so much with securing taxis and providing information as I explored the island---and always with a smile.)

The Mafolie isn’t a “resort,” but it offered me the perfect weekend getaway I was looking for---not too crowded, not heavily populated with kids, relatively quiet (the sounds of the bands drifting uphill from pre-Carnival festivities can’t be helped), and a no-fuss (come and go) breakfast. It’s a unique property that left me refreshed with after a Caribbean escape.

Not only does the stay come with the great view, that view means you’re rather centrally located; I was able easily to check out many areas of the island—Magens Bay, Red Hook, Charlotte Amalie, and more with easily arranged cab rides. It was easy to come and go to see many areas of the island without the fuss of many larger resort type places.

Other reviewers are correct in that the wireless signal isn’t great in many areas of the hotel. Also, this isn’t “plush” by any means; the price is for the view, not the amenities. And yes, the property shows some wear; investing in updates would go far for repeat business. Breakfast did not seem well tended to. (Another guest had to show others how to use the egg sandwich maker, and coffee ran out with no one around to refill the container.) But I did not attend to be pampered. And when I mentioned these things over a late cocktail my last night, I got the impression genuine care was taken with my feedback.

For what I wanted, I give the Mafolie five stars. But I advise anyone to know where you’re going and what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for new and shiny or extra pampering, this isn’t your place. But if you want to get away from it all and can appreciate an eclectic island nature with friendly service, book today.

We stayed two nights at the Mafolie last month, before and after a week’s sailing charter, so we experienced two different guestrooms.

I would echo many of the comments other reviewers have made.

Pros:
• Exceptional views of Charlotte Amalie and St. Thomas harbor from rooms, patios, pool, and restaurant.
• Friendly, accommodating front-desk staff.
• Outstanding restaurant and bar with attentive, unobtrusive service.
• Convenient business center with free Internet access and printer.
• Comfortable room. Ours were plenty quiet, despite others’ comments to the contrary, and we stayed during the town carnival with around-the-clock music!
• Convenient to town, central marinas, and airport.
• Complimentary breakfast was good.
• Clean, neat rooms.

Areas for improvement:
• Towels are very worn and should be replaced. Separate towels are not provided at the pool area.
• Wifi is temperamental and unreliable.
• Bath amenities are very basic. No tissues or lotion provided, for example.
• In-room safe was not working.
• One room had a ceiling fan, whereas the other did not. So helpful in a warm climate! Instead, we had to run the air conditioner.

This hotel was a good fit for us, and we would stay again. The only disadvantage in our case is that, although the hotel is close to town and we like to walk, walking there (or anywhere nearby) is a death wish, given the traffic flow and narrow roads. This means a $15-20 cab ride each way to go anywhere off-site. Given that we stayed only two nights, it wasn’t an issue, but if you wanted to go into town every day over a longer stay, it would get expensive in a hurry.

Be aware that there are no shops, other restaurants, or places to walk right near the hotel; it is somewhat isolated, but we liked that. If you want to avoid expensive, often pretentious luxury hotels, this place might suit you well.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel based on trip advisor reviews, but for us it was not a comfortable match so after two nights we moved to another hotel (Marriot Frenchman) and were much happier. First of all, the view is gorgeous - no question. We also enjoyed the comfort of the bed okay and the room was very clean. The two problems we had is 1) too far away from ANYTHING…there is no store, no cafe, nothing except the restaurant on site and a few snacks on site which was very isolating for us. The WIFI didn't work at Mafolie (staff kept insisting it worked, but none of our devices could link in with the password) and 2) the maintenance of our room was a problem in many areas. It was clean, but poorly maintained and worse when it rained. We didn't complain a lot honestly, because it seemed they were doing as well as they could. The restaurant was okay, some things were awesome such as the Mango/Avocado Salad. The desserts were good. The worst part of the restaurant was the COFFEE, which never seemed hot and seemed poorly purchased. This is hard for us because we love to drink very hot, very high quality coffee!! For us Mafolie was a poor match, we didn't realize how much we would miss being far away from the water. All in all, the hotel we moved to was barely more money per night than the Mafolie, and a better value for our money. I wish Mafolie well, I guess it is quaint to many…perhaps not as comfortable and convenient as we needed it to be.

Mafolie was an amazing choice for us! The view is so gorgeous, the restaurant is amazing, and the staff was great! We booked 4 days here and 2 days at Bolongo Bay resort. We paid a third of the price of a beach front resort and enjoyed it much more than our time at the resort!
