“Wonderful Stay at this Unique Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 May 2012

I recently stayed at The Green Iguana Hotel May 4 and then again on May 12 and 13. My husband and I and two other couples were going on a sailboat trip in the British Virgin Islands. We flew into St. Thomas and stayed the 1st night at this delightful hotel. Then again 2 more nights at the end of our vacation.

The Managers - Gwen and John were so warm and helpful. Could not have been nicer. The room A6 was spacious, inviting and a breathtaking view of the Charlotte Amalie harbor. Large bedroom, bath and wonderful sitting area with awning windows.

We loved the location. So close to town with restaurants and shopping. Just a really lovely small unique hotel. I love the Virgin islands and this hotel was a real fine. Be back soon I hope. Kathy Willis, Indianapolis, IN

Room Tip: A5 and A6 because of the outstanding view

We really enjoyed your stay with us! Bookending a BVI Adventure at The Green Iguana Hotel is a great way to get into the vacation mode and to wind down after your vacation before you begin your journey home. When you do it in groups such as yours, we feel it makes the vacations even more special! Loved having you here!

We had a really nice stay at The Green Iguana Hotel. The owners, Gwen and John, were very helpful recommending beaches, restaurants, other places to see. It was possible to borrow equipment for snorkeling and the atmosphere was nice and relaxed. The hotel is placed very close to Charlotte Amalie harbor and the small city and is only a 5 minute walk down the historic 99 steps. The rooms were clean, contained everything we need and with a wonderful view over the bay. And everything to a very fair price. This place is definitely worth recommending - and visiting.

This is a great little mom & pop getaway hotel in the foothills of St. Thomas. A short historic 99 step descent gets you to all the action at Charlotte Amalie harbor. The hotel managers Gwen and John are anxious to please and made our stay very pleasant. Great view from balcony. Recommended!

Wasn't Carnival FUN! So many activities just a short walk from The Green Iguana Hotel! This was the island's 60th Carnival Celebration! You will be able to reminisce this fall as MTV's Real World cast was in the Adult Parade!

Not as expensive as a resort, although things ARE expensive in the Virgin Islands, in general. We like getting away from the chain hotels and restaurants - if you are traveling somewhere different, why stay in or eat at a place that you might find in your home town??!! Room was nicely decorated and included a full kitchen. AC was a treat. Location is an easy walk down in to town (yes, bit more challenging going back UP but we used a taxi, especially at night, after dinner). Gwen and John are the "hosts" and are very accommodating. And, yes, fabulous lizards everywhere, and iguanas all around!!

Thank you for saying "we are not a resort!" We feel we have more to offer than the 'resorts' do! We are close to town, and to beaches all over the island. John and I enjoy finding "the Mom and Pops" when travel and strive to be just that. The Island Charm of The Green Iguana Hotel is what drew us to this property 11 years ago!

My wife and I stayed here bookending a week's stay on Virgin Gorda. We really enjoyed the effort that Gwen and John put into making us feel comfortable. We walked back and forth to all the stores on Main Street and the attractions on the waterfront with little difficulty. We did find that the cabbies were not eager to take us there, either from the waterfront or from the airport. I would not recommend trying to hand carry or roll any significant luggage up the "99 steps" unless you're really fit. We didn't see anyone trying it. We appreciated the in room refrigerator for keeping foodstuffs we were carrying to VG cold (in a thermal bag). Yes, we did hear roosters crowing but found that easy to disregard. We felt completely safe walking about. Only time we were apprehensive was in the cabs....the roads are terrible and the cabbies drive just on the edge of control. I would never rent a car to drive here. Moving from an "H" room on our arrival to an "A" room on our departure resulted in our only tiny disappointment, the inability to sleep in on the morning of our departure due to the intensity of the sunlight penetrating the hanging strips hanging before the sliding doorway onto the lovely balcony. We would love to stay here again should we return to Charlotte Amalie.

Room Tip: Tell Gwen what you need and she will either accommodate you or work to minimize what you want to avo...

We look forward to your return visit! We apologize that the luvered blinds were not room darkening enough for you to be able to sleep in before your travels. Request Guest Room H1 when you return. There is a curtain on the balcony to help block the sunlight! Thank you for staying with us!

In our initial contact with the Green Iguana, Gwen asked repeated if there was anything else that she could do to help us. We had read about a bicycling opportunity on Water Island; Gwen immediately sent St. Thomas taxi rates, ferry schedules and information about the biking tour. Upon our arrival she brought out additional information that she had gleened from Water Island Adventures. The very comfortable H-2 room had a private phone line; the local call to make the biking reservation was free. The room also had a great balcony to watch the sunrise and listen to the roosters in the morning. The bed was comfortable and the room clean. Gwen and John were down to earth, friendly, full of good advice and stories; we seemed to have lots in common as our visits to the office were never short, unless we just wanted to grab a bottle of water or beer from the office refrigerator. Wish we could find places just like this everywhere.
