I spent ten days at The Green Iguana Hotel on a trip in March 2005, requiring me to work in the Enid Baa library downtown - walking distance from the hotel, albeit that the 99 steps sometimes felt like 999 when I had to walk back up at the end of the day.

The number one attribute of this hotel is the friendliness and helpful attitude of the managers Mike and Linda Ratcliff. They took me with them to the beach the first day I arrived, took me grocery shopping, advised on restaurants and safety at night, picked me up downtown once when I got stuck with too heavy a load to walk back up (taxis only wanted to take tourists back to the ships at that hour), and made me feel at ease while travelling alone.

The hotel room was large, clean, and comfortable and the view over Charlote Amalia was lovely every morning when I sat on my balcony having breakfast.

I wish Mike had told me that I could have had access to the pool at Blackbeard's next door (he forgot) because I would have enjoyed a dip to cool off at the end of my long days.

This is not a fancy place, but the price was right and it was absolutely perfect for my purposes. I am delighted that The Green Iguana was recommended to me.

First, the rooms really do look like their website shows. They are well appointed, and have EVERYTHING you might want. Besides the ubiquitous cable TV (ask for instructions), the rooms have a fridge, micorwave and coffee maker.

You will hear well founded complaints about the neighborhood. You have to choose. Do you want to be near downtown and its shopping, or not? If you do, this place is as well situated as you can find. Plus, it is right atop the famous 99 steps, so access to the waterfront is convenient. The view is as good as management says it is, but not necessarily from your room. Many face sideways to the waterfront.

The managers are friendly and helpful, but don't expect a normal front desk. There is none. If the managers are out, you are on your own.

You can check room price comparisons on your own, but be aware the managers can and will deal for multiple rooms or extended stays. It is worthwhile to ask.

At this writing, the restaurant at Black Beard's next door was closed indefinitely. Inquire if meals on site is an issue. Otherwise, having Black Beard's available to use the pool or just enjoy the view is a plus.

We spent a total four nights at the Green Iguana over Christmas 2004 - New Years 2005, and were extremely pleased. Mike, the general manager, and his wife Linda were very accommodating. Even Coki the dog allowed us to get in a 'dog fix' while away from our critters. Both rooms we stayed in were immaculate and spacious with territorial view balconies. A kitchenette allows you to save some $ on food or get your coffee fix in the morning. They have clean laundry facilities if you, like us, travel light.

I suspect people unhappy with the Green Iguana are expecting a resort experience. With just eight rooms, there isn't a restaurant, beach, room service, etc. You need to walk into town to eat out, and getting back is up the ’99 Steps’. And yes, you should probably take a taxi back if you are out on foot after dark. We had a car (ask for rental recommendations), and never felt uncomfortable. It's in the middle of Charlotte Amalie, the neighborhood dogs bark at times, and the roosters’ crow all night. But that is what Charlotte Amalie sounds like!

The real stars of the Green Iguana are Mike and Linda. They were very helpful with dining recommendations, directions, advice, and just about anything we needed – true examples of Texas hospitality. We went from their capable hands to sailing school aboard SV Samana and back, and had a fantastic trip. We'll be back someday!

My wife and I stayed at the Green Iguana for two nights prior to leaving "the islands." We were VERY pleasantly surprised at the property. I had read so many good things about this place that my expectations were pretty high (for a reasonably-priced hotel.) We were astonished at the cleanliness of the room! The walls had fresh white paint, and the bed was nice and clean. The grounds are lush with flowers and trees and (watch for crossing geckos!) Mike was so nice, and very accomodating...
We both really enjoyed our stay at the Green Iguana. If we return to St. Thomas some day, we will first look for a room here. Thanks for the bananas, Mike! ;)

We stayed here after reading the rave reviews on this website. I was disappointed. The room did look like the photo on the website with a very comfortable pillowtop bed, but, the problem was the location. I didn't feel safe and the place looked like a dump on the outside. The security door at the entrance was right outside our room, and people slammed it all night. Crime is so bad in the area, the manager has a dog that barks all of the time to keep the thieves away. I would not stay at the Green Iguana again.

The Green Iguana is an outstanding value. The room was spotless and the hosts were very accomodating. We stayed there during Spring Break and found the room to be "over-sized" - even for the five of us. Mike was very gracious to provide a comfortable air mattress for our 10-year old who didn't mind the floor. The setting is terrific and gives you an instant feel for the island climate.

I travel worldwide for my company and found that the Green Iguana was just as comfortable as some of the pricier places I've stayed.

Families looking for a great place to stay without breaking the bank will not be disappointed.
Thanks again Mike !

Just returned from 5 days at the Green Iguana. Great location, terrific atmosphere, large clean room. Only about a 7 minute walk into downtown. It's also right next to Blackbeard's Castle and the view from the pool has to be the best in St. Thomas. Management is fantastic. Mike was especially helpful in terms of advice and transportation! And say hello to Coki!
