St. Thomas Synagogue
Certificate of Excellence

We are Jewish and it was interesting to see a piece of history tucked away in the Caribbean. The sand floor is unique and the video about how the place was established and who used it was very interesting.

We aren't Jewish either, but when our church (St Thomas Reformed Church) and the Synagogue held their annual Thanksgiving shared service, we attended eagerly. What a beautiful building! Well kept, filled with history and friendly people willing to share. There's a small museum in the back, and sand floors (yup, beach sand). Ask why when you visit, which you definitely should. Take Nye Gade (the one way street with the handicap parking) from Main Street, across Back Street, past the Reformed Church, and then left onto Crystal Gade (which, of course, isn't marked). Up the hill, and the Synagogue is on the right.

We're not Jewish but found this to be the most interesting land-side place we visited. It's full of history -- including links to our home of Georgia. The cantor sang for the two of us, and the rabbi read from the scrolls. And, they recommended a terrific restaurant nearby.

The synagogue is a wonderful historic site to visit. There is an informative video available for viewing at the back of the sanctuary. When visiting there to learn about services for local residents, the synagogue administrator was quite helpful and really friendly.

If you enjoy history, then you will like seeing this place. It still has sand floors from the past! It is one of the oldest in the new world
