“Home base in paradise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 November 2013

Great to be back in St Thomas at the Cove. We are owners and return yearly in November and happy to find things as good as always. Service was good from the staff (front desk, restaurant, bar and housekeeping). The property is well maintained and the villas have been renovated within the last year and furniture and colors now seem to fit the Caribbean feel (see pictures). Villas obviously include full kitchen for you to have meals in if you desire including gas grill areas for cooking out. The cove beach area this year seemed to have more sea urchins so beware and water shoes are recommended if you don’t want to keep a sharp eye out. We always take a walk (or a short shuttle ride) and opt for the beach over at the Morning Star as it’s a much larger sandy beach than at the cove. Staying at the cove allows guests use of the beach/pools at the Morning Star or the Reef so you have lots of options. We will be back for sure to our home base in paradise.

Tips:
- Walk or take the shuttle over to Morning Star beach its bigger and better
- Setup a no-room account at the Reef/Morning Star for drinks, food over at the hotel side since they don’t support cross charging
- Know the cruise ship schedule (posted on vinow.com) and plan around it for trips into town or even other activities on and around island
- Day trip to St John is a must – great beaches, snorkeling etc. We like Honeymoon, Cinnamon Bay, Trunk Bay and all are easy to get to – others are also great but further out.
- Megens Bay on the north side of the island – AM or PM are better to avoid crowds and mind the cruise ship schedules
- Sailing, boat day trips to area islands

Room Tip: Almost all rooms have some sort of ocean view. The higher the better but some rooms may have a walk...

We arrived at th
We Marriott Frenchman's Cove resort on a Sunday. The following day, we met with our weekly planner (Stephanie, I think) and that was good. However, when we transitioned over to the Activity Center "tent" that lady was not helpful at all. In fact, we wanted to take a BVI tour on Wednesday given there would be so many cruise ships coming into St Thomas but she did not sell us the trip and told us we would have to take a 10 minute swim from the CAT to the shore line on Jost Van Dyke. We said 10 minutes was extreme and we did not want to do that. The end result, we did not visit any of the BVI islands. On Wednesday, we were promised our room would have a tidy cleaning between the hours of 0900 and 1700. That never happened. We called the front desk 3 separate occasions asking for clean towels and received horrible customer service! We finally received towels (thrown into a bag) around 7:30 that evening. We were given rum punch vouchers for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday due to the poor customers service on Wednesday. So, on Friday afternoon, my husband went to turn in two rum punch vouchers and the lady said, "Didn't you already use these last Friday?" Really! We were not there last Friday and I did not know she was the Rum Police. Upon check out on Sunday, nobody came to pick us up from our St John's villa, so we called a cab. When checking out, the checkout clerk told us we owed $ on our account and in fact, we had a credit. The funny thing is, I bought Marriott timeshare property only 48 hours after arriving to the Cove, maybe I should have waited to by a timeshare at another Marriott location? Bottom line, the management staff needs to be accountable and they need to teach there staff great customer service!

Marriott's Frenchman''s Cove, part of the Marriott Vacation Club's premier properties, presents quality living, dining and recreational opportunities in a Caribbean atmosphere. The Charlotte Amalie location, perched on a cliff from beach to about 600 feet above, provides Marriott quality, amazing tropical beauty, and amenities which meet virtually every possible need.

The resort, actually part of a larger complex, sits on a point on the southeast side of Frenchman's Reef. The other properties, Marriott Frenchman's Reef and Morning Star, are wrapped around a peninsula which juts out into the brilliant Caribbean waters.

The Cove complex is part of the Marriott Vacation Club Collection. As such, the one, two or three bedroom apartments can be rented through a travel search engine, Marriott, or used by Marriott Vacation Club Members. The best rooms typically go to Marriott Members. This translates into the better rooms. (Quick note, three bedroom units all have the best views.)

Units come ready for small crowds, As an example, it is possible to place twelve individuals in a three bedroom unit. Crowded, but possible. All are outfitted with washer/dryers, full kitchens, and are ready to use on arrival.

While there are two restaurants on site, there are two additional at the adjoining Marriott properties. Overall, the food choices for those who do not want to cook are large. Prices are typical resort prices, comparable to resorts worldwide.

Shuttle buses are available for transportation between resorts, and they are on call 24 hours a a day. Additionally, transportation is provided for a small fee by boat to town, a 10 minute ride. Otherwise, a car or taxi transportation is necessary for getting around away from the resort.

Both first time and frequent visitors can be heard discussing the beauty and the style of the property.

This is not a Holiday Inn type of environment. It is an amenity full facility, and is priced accordingly. If you are looking for a high quality vacation experience, this property is one to take a long look at.

Room Tip: All rooms are ocean views. Higher floors offer more to see, but may be difficult to book if you are...

This is a very nice resort. The suites provide plenty of space with a decent kitchen and nice views of the ocean. The pool is not very large, but it never felt too crowded. The hotel beach is also on the small side, but still not too crowded. We stayed in the St John building and while I wish we were in a closer building, it wasn't a big deal getting down to the beach. The breakfast buffet on the weekends was reasonable. They have bottomless bloody mary's and Mamosas which can take the edge off in a hurry. My only minor complaint was that the room didn't come stocked with beach towels and they don't provide them pool side. It took a while (a few hours) before we got our towels. With that being said, if the price is right, I would definitely consider a repeat trip.

I have been here for the past 6 years and I love this place. They just renovated the villas this year and that made the place even better. The villas are beautiful inside and the view out is even better. These villas are approximately 1200 sq ft with a large master bedroom and bathroom and another bedroom with two queen size beds and a good size bath. The kitchen is good size along with the living space. Everything about this property is great. The pool is very nice and the beach is also great you just have to know where to walk into the water so you are not walking over a too many rocks. There is pretty decent snorkeling along both sides of the beach. The service that we received was great this year, Frito was so friendly and attentive and down at the restaurant Shelly was great, we ate in her sections probably 4 times while we were there. The housekeeping only comes once a week but they do a great job and a little tip goes a long way. These people work hard and an extra $5-$10 is much appreciated and they will try harder to make your stay even better.

This resort was gorgeous. A friend owns but not at this resort but was able to get a condo here and we did a girls getaway with 5 of us total. The condo itself is all newly renovated with all the amenities. 2 bedrooms, one with 2 queens and own bathroom that was also accessible from the hallway in the main area and the other with a king and separate Jacuzzi tub with double sinks and separate area with shower and toilet. Plenty of closet space and a safe in the closet. TV's in every room too. The beds were so comfortable (we were mostly in them by 9 at night as we would get up early and take advantage of all the island had to offer and due to the low key nightlife - we were ready for bed after dinner!). Complete kitchen with dishwasher, washer dryer and great balconies. Nothing like waking up, pulling open your vertical blinds and seeing the most awesome view of the Carribean you could hope for. We stayed in the Virgin Gorda which was one of the lower level buildings which we preferred so we were very convenient to pool, beach, bar/dining area and a little further away from main lobby but an easy 2 elevator and quick walk trip. Coming in, we were offered their shuttle to bring us to our room and when we saw the steep, windy was down we thought we'd need to take the shuttle up every time but the layout of the buildings with the elevators makes it easy. Food is pricey but we made a list and sent 2 scouts to the Gourmet market for essentials using a cab who agreed to wait. You can get a sandwich by the pool for $15.00 but there is no tax on food so you just pay that and your tip so it's doable. We also found the portions large and at times some of us shared a wrap or salad. The staff at the bar/dining area work really hard but remain friendly and enthusiastic. Tameka at the front desk was awesome. She was able to originally move us to Virgin Gorda from another area of the resort and also was able to exchange our dirty towels from St. John's for fresh ones at a moments notice. Darren was great. Always around and helpful. Marvin at the pool was friendly and even turned the slide on for us the last day at 7:30 since we wanted to ride it once since we hadn't had time since we got there and we would be leaving before it opened at 9. Nightlife is fine for us older folks. Standards like karaoke night and islandly music but also some happy hour highlights like rum tastings and wine tastings and similar events. They run great excursions out of the Adventure Desk at the place. We did the sunset cruise on the catamaran as well as the snorkeling trip to turtle cove. Crew is awesome. You'll feel like you're out with your friends. Tip: if you are an owner, take advantage of the offer to meet with the concierge service. Clint came to our condo with lots of great info and discount cards we could use at various places on the island and beach bags for us all. While he mentioned you could do a tour of the timeshare ownership, he didn't push it which made us all feel his service was a very nice touch from the property. We took cabs rather than rented a car based on the left side driving and the winding, hilly roads. For us it was ok since we were each only paying for ourselves but if you were there as a family, a car may make sense as they charge by the passenger, not the trip. A typical ride will cost $8 - $10 pp one way so it adds up. But make friends with your cab driver as they will give you their card and if you call them for another trip, they will definitely give you a discount. Fares are regulated so they can't charge more than allowed, but they can give you a discount. Put it this way, if they are taking 1 person from the Cove to the ferry and getting $14 for that trip, they'd rather take 5 people and get $10 each and make $50 for the same trip. I can't wait to go back for the clear water, great snorkeling and beautiful views.

My best friends own a unit at this resort and so I have traveled here annually for the past two years. We love everything about this place, the resort, the staff, the service....The only thing I think they can improve on is the pool for toddlers - it is very small and boring.

Be sure to visit Jost Van Dyke, the Baths, St. Johns....these islands are amazing!

I have a good time every time I go!!!

Room Tip: Units facing the water and high up is always a plus...
