I crewed on a sailboat to Virgin Gorda, BVI. I had a reservation at the Sapphire Beach Resort for just 2 days to relax from the boat passage, before I flew home from St. Thomas. However, we arrived many days earlier than expected (great wind). Even though I was past my free cancellation date, when I talked to Corlis at Sapphire Beach Resort she said she would refund my entire deposit amount. Even though I did not stay there I received 1st class service. I will book another reservation at the Sapphire Beach Resort, and this time I'll stay.

If you rent here, go through VRBO and rent from an owner. We used rental 216218 (E202) and had a fantastic time. The condo was wonderful and clean, with an amazing view of St. John to wake up to. It's right on the beach and there is snorkle gear, coolers and chairs at the unit for you to use and take on day trips. It's also located next to the Sapphire Bay Marina where you can pick up an amazing day trip through BVI with Break A Way (recommended by the owners, and was one of the highlights of our trip). Also super close to Red Hook if you want to take the ferries to the other islands or grab a bite to eat. The unit has a great kitchen - a full size fridge, stove top, toaster, coffee machine, blender, etc. making it easy to cook meals at home. The owners from rental 216218 were VERY responsive, and I never felt out of touch.

If you get a chance, eat at the Off the Grid BBQ food truck at the top of the hill. Their food is amazing and very reasonably priced! Probably one of the best meals we had during our stay. Also great was the sushi restaurant in Red Hook called Revelry (formerly Coco Blue but went through a name change 2 weeks ago)

The one thing I will mention (which would have been disappointing if we had not known in advance from reading other reviews of the property) is that I would recommend renting a car. The "resort" (like many others in St. Thomas) has not been kept up and doesn't not have a restaurant or shops and the tennis courts have seen better days but does have a nice pool and a place to rent water gear like paddle boards. I didn't take away any stars from the review I wrote on VRBO because this is not the fault of the owners and did not affect our personal enjoyment of our stay or the condo itself (which was perfect) but worth noting as to not have any false expectations.

Having said that, we wouldn't have picked a different place to stay. The owners were very easy to work with and the space was clean with a beautiful view. Great location away from the tourists but still close to restaurants, ferries, grocery, etc. Don’t think you can find a better view on the island!

Room Tip: Rent from VRBO 216218

We rented two second floor units in building C through VRBO. With a conjoining balcony. The view from the balcony was so breathtaking. Color of the sea, sky ,white sand and palm tree was so vivid. I could just stay on the balcony all day drinking painkiller.

Both units were clean and tastefully decorated. Had everything that we need . A good supply of beach towels and clean linen.

The reefs were so close to the shore, snorkeling was good. Heard about people seeing turtles and rays. We swam over to the grassy part but could not find them. I guessed we were not up early enough.

There was a Grill Bar right by building C. Susie would take your order and bring it right to your lounge chair. Great burgers, fries. Loved the chicken fingers and pickles. They made very good cocktail, too. Price was reasonable.

Lots of iguanas sunbathing. You will have a problem if you afraid of crawly things. We used to have a bearded dragon as pet, so they were fun to be around. They don't really bother people until they see you eating. They will gather around you. But please don't feed them. Also really, really make sure that no iguana is on the tree overhead. My friend missed a heavy dropping of bowel and bladder movement by merely 2 seconds. It was hilarious!

Sapphire beach is centrally located. Very close to Redhook which has lots of good restaurants. The best thing being so close to the car ferry dock, you can sleep in a little longer if you want to take the early car barge to St. John.

We had an awesome 10 days at this resort. Will love to go back someday and rent from the same owner. He was very helpful.

This was our first trip to St. Thomas. We travel frequently and usually stay at all-inclusive resorts. We chose to stay at a condo this time for two reasons: a better beach and an opportunity to check-out the restaurants on the neighboring islands.

The condo is wonderful! Great air conditioning, comfortable bed, great water pressure, excellent kitchen, fast Internet, and, a true million-dollar view. Watching the sun rise over St. John is a true treat in life. We were also fortunate to be there during a full moon, and the reflection of the moon at night off the Caribbean Sea is something you'll remember the rest of your life. I give the condo an A+!

As for St. Thomas ... it's a lovely island but there are a few things you need to know: 1) Prices at grocery stores can differ by 50% (especially for produce). 2) Liquor and French, Italian and Spanish wines are cheap; tomatoes, beef & chicken are double what you pay in the states. 3) You can get some great fish at a terrific price, if you buy directly from the fisherman. 4) Be careful getting on and off the ferries to St. John. The two small ones are easier to navigate. We saw two people damage their cars getting on the big ferry (you won't have trouble distinguishing between the small and large ferries). 5) The ticket you buy is only good on the ferry you buy it from. 6) The best restaurants are in St. John (check out Mongoose Junction). 7) We used Budget Rental Car and had a great experience with a Toyota Yaris.

Will we go back? Absolutely--and I hope we can stay at Annette's place again. It's that good!!!

Room Tip: We stayed in condo E-103. The owners name is Annette.

Stayed in Building E in March 2013. And I just returned from a 3 week trip in Sep 2013. These condos are owned by individuals, so make sure you stay in one that was renovated. E104 (also called Beachtacular! @ Sapphire Beach Resort and Marina) was amazing. Steps to the beach, clean, comfortable, and perfect for my stay.

They were doing a rehabilitation on the exterior of Building D, it looked to be 95% completed on Oct. 4, 2013. The rehab gave this place an really new look, can't wait to see how it looks when all the buildings are completed.

Room Tip: Make sure you see pics of the rooms. Call the owners and have a conversation.

I had to laugh when I saw the link to "amenities" on this page because this place has absolutely NO amenities. Do not be fooled. There are no restaurants, no room service, no beach towels, no coffee filters, no paper towels, no shampoo, no beach chairs, no nothing. Not even an office - you check in and out at Pavillions and Pools. According to the locals, after the hotel units were sold off as condo units, there ensued some kind of litigation revolving the developer who let the place fall apart. Even the water stopped flowing and they had to truck it in because the developer shut down the desalination equipment,. The tennis courts are ruined, the restaurants that were there closed. This is sad because I stayed here before when it was beautiful. As one driver said, "Sapphire used to be a happening place." We came to refer to it as the Best Marigold Hotel St. Thomas, thus the title of this review. You must have a car to stay here. We didn't plan for this (there were, after all, supposed to be two restaurants) and ended up spending a boatload getting in and out of Red Hook. Not all condo owners purchase so-called amenities for their tenants' use, so whether or not you can access free snorkelling equipment depends on whether your owner did this. If not, it's $7 for two hours. Not all owners have beach chairs assigned to their units, so if they don't, and not all do, be prepared to pay $7 for a chair, too. Also, the buildings are under (slow) renovation, so there is construction underway. We live in the city, so we stopped hearing it after a while.

What it does have is a gorgeous beach with breath-taking views of St. John and beautiful water and good snorkeling. We saw a stingray and there are rumored to be turtles.

Caveat emptor.

I have read some of the reviews on Trip Advisor regarding Sapphire Beach Resort and Marina. Some make harsh comments without knowing all the facts. A lot the condos are individually owned by private parties. Some owners hired this company to take care of their units. This company advertises in hotel magazines, web sites........etc. Their services is what gives Sapphire Beach a bad name. This company receives really bad reviews. Other owners who take care of their units are the individuals you want to rent from directly. You will find them on HomeAway and VRBO. Our association is not the ones who keep boarding up parts of the property. Many know there is an individual who has caused many problems for us, because he is a very difficult individual. Our association is currently refreshing the buildings and they look fabulous. Two buildings are finished and they will continue the work until completed. Yes, the buildings were looking run down, but that was because the difficult person made it impossible to get any work done before now. I personally want to apologize to ones who had a bad experience with Sapphire Beach and I hope maybe you will return one day to see the changes. You just need to contact and talk with the real owners when making a reservation. The owners who care have clean towels, great linen, beach towels, beach lounge chairs, clean condo, everything you need for your vacation. We do not have a restaurant on the property, but that is not because we don't want one. The difficult person I spoke of will not allow us to have one, he closed the Dive-in shop on the beach, but we have ordered new lounge chairs for the beach. Owners have purchased a couple sets of snorkel gear for their guests. The list is too long to share all the problems this person has caused owners on the property. But, we are strong and every time he throws up a wall we walk around it. We have the Banana Cabana between buildings B & C. They have great food and drinks. When this person ripped down the laundry, we found another way to put up a new laundry by the marina. It has been a challenge for us, but we have a beautiful beach, great snorkeling, great owners, and a marina with great day trips.
Some owners have updated their condos and they look fabulous. I hope this helps some who are looking for a great vacation.

We rented a renovated condo in the C Building directly from the owner on VRBO....the condo was clean and comfortable with a well stocked kitchen. I have a feeling many of the bad reviews here are from people who rented through an agency or stayed in an un-renovated condo. The view out to Sapphire Beach from the balcony was beautiful. It was low season so there were not a ton of people and it was great to sit on the balcony at night. There was a great breeze all day and night. I do wish the beach area was not SO well lit at night...there are lights in too many trees so it takes away from the serenity of the water and the stars.

The Beach: you cannot snorkel directly off of the beach in front of this building because the coral comes up to the shoreline...not a bad problem to have! We parked our chairs (which were included with our rental) down near the dive shop/Bldg A and enjoyed the beach and the snorkeling from there. The reef out to the right was just average...lots of gray coral, but if you are a good swimmer get out near the point and it really comes alive. We saw a spotted eagle ray two days in a row! If you don't want to snorkel, relax in your chair & enjoy the breeze--there is a woman who will get drinks/food for you!

The Complex: this complex has a bit of difficult past with the closed restaurant, etc....But, they are working on beautifying the property & buildings. When we visited, Bldg A was under construction---jack hammers most days (little bit annoying) and boarded up windows. Bldg D was also not finished when we visited (beginning of September). However, everyone we met was friendly and helpful. The guys at the dive shop will help you with whatever you need to get going in the water.

Other than the beach, the great thing about this complex is the location. It is a 3-5 minute drive into Red Hook so it is easy to get out at night for dinner/drinks and catch the ferry to St John or BVI for a day. There is also 24 hour security and we saw them walking around the complex at night as well as during the day.

Room Tip: Book your condo directly with an owner and read the reviews! Ground floor units have walk-out beach...
