Took a catamaran from St. Thomas (USVI) to St. John. I was whining about the price until the trip began. First, your sailing though the Caribbean for an hour of so. Crystal clear blue waters, small islands, great drinks and sun until you reach Francis Bay. There the boat anchors about 100 yards off shore. You can snorkel or just swim into the shore and enjoy a primitive beach. No facilities hear, but the catamaran had them. It's a pick up and go site, part of St. John's which is 80% National Park, including Francis Bay. Really, it is something that will stick with you for a lifetime. PS-our boat was the only group in the area, about 25 of us. If you go into the jungle, you will find some paths and roads but this is really not a hiking experience, this is a lay back and enjoy the beach experience. Not sure if there is a fee for the National Park but would guess there is. The captain of our boat stated he pays a fee to anchor off shore.
