Be sure to get here early as there is only a few spots to park. This is the reason why we loved this beach, the lack of people. Remember in the morning to bring some bug spray. The best snorkeling is to the right of the Oppenheimer house looking at the water.

“Early risers get a practically private beach”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 April 2014

this is a beautiful beach on which there are only a couple cottages and for which there are only 5 parking spots. Therefore, if you get there around 8:30 you will be almost alone until about 11:00. If you get there early you can go to the end of the beach and you will feel like you have the beach to yourself. This is not a snorkling hot spot, just beautiful water.

“Gibney Beach for a first timer”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 March 2014

I almost hate to do anything that brings more attention to Gibney because it is a lesser known beach in St. John, but since it will be a while till I am back, I guess it's OK.
The best day of our 9 day trip was spent at Gibney. One of the best things going for it is the LACK of parking which means that only a small handful of people will be there for the day and you should have a little distance between you and the next group.

There are only 3 parking spots at the entrance (all 3 cars should be parked in a line on the left side of the gate). There are two other nearby 'parking spaces'. We chose to park across the street on a dirt space just wide enough for a jeep. You will probably need to put your Jeep into 4wd to pull into this space as it is a steep uphill grade and over tree roots. One other space is up the road a little on the said, parked paralell (also not an official spot).
One other option if it is parked up is to drop off your passenger at Gibney/Oppenheimer and then go back and park at Hawksnest. You could then enter the water at Hawksnest and swim to the right around the rocks to get to Gibney.

Keep in mind the Gibney Villas are private and they now have some chairs on the beach that sit back a little and are roped off along the tree line. I preferred to stay more toward the oppenheimer end of the beach
This is a very quiet, tranquil beach with little noise other than the soft 'woosh' of the waves. People that go here tend to be quiet and looking for solitude so it might not be the best place to bring a bunch of children unless you don't care if they might disturb others. This is in a calm bay with very few waves. Snorkeling was good to the right end of the beach, especially if you go around the rocks and just out of sight along the shore.
We also saw a young deer at this beach that came within 30 feet of us, then ran down the beach jumping in and out of the waves. There are lots of Mangrove trees along the waters edge so this beach is shady much of the day. There are a few places you can get sun if you want. Walking from Oppenheimer to Gibney you will need to walk in ankle deep water to get around the trees.
All in all, this is a tranquil beach and one of my favorite spots on the island. If you want to go, go early. We were there by 8;45 am (high season) and the 3 spots by the gate were already parked up but we managed to park across the street. There are no facilities at this beach.
