My sister-in-law introduced us to a truly remarkable villa in St. John. Catherine apparently worked with builders nearly every day for over three years to craft the House of Open Arms high on a hill overlooking seemingly endless views of coves, the sea, and Tortola across the strait.

We didn't need to be told that she is an painter and a ceramacist; every interior space is open and understated but subtly arresting and inviting.

We weren't on a second honeymoon but it sure felt like it. We had stayed on the Cruz Bay side of St. John 17 yeaars ago. The house and the hills of Coral Bay are what used to be and then some.

The House of Open Arms is located in a unbelievably beautiful location near Coral Bay. One of the things we enjoyed the most was watching sunrises come up over the water. We stayed in the cottage and found it private with a stunning view overlooking the water. There were no boats to block your view except the occassional sailboat drifting by.

You only get an idea how serene this setting is from the pictures on tthe website while the reality is much more than the pictures. We arrived after dark, and my first thoughts when seeing our accommodations by the light of day were: WOW, this is even nicer than I expected! We had a chance to go through the villa, and thought that this had an even better view than the cottage as it is a little higher up on the hill. Particularly with the villa, the pictures do not do it justice.

The owner is an artist and this is apparant in the way the cottage is decorated. We did not expect the high end art and accessories such as hand made pottery, original watercolors, and Bose sound system. My favorite place was the outdoor shower, which is made of natural stone and mosaic and very much a one of a kind work of art.

The flowers and gardens above the cottage are lovely. Our room was filled with fresh flowers as well as dinner for our first night stay which was much welcomed after traveling all day. Showers were hot, the mattress comfortable, towels fluffy, everything was very well done. We have stayed in many different price ranges while traveling through the years and thought The House of Open Arms was an incredible experience.

The stars are particularly bright out on this end of the island and we enjoyed stargazing at night while listening to the tree frogs and gentle sounds of the ocean. We felt fortunate to experience the Caribbean in such a natural, beautiful setting.
