“Great day with Captain Rick around St. John and Jost Van Dyke”
Reviewed 9 May 2014

My family and I just returned from a wonderful vacation on St. John, highlighted by a great day with Captain Rick and Lion In Da Sun. First, I want to say that the logistics of the day went exactly as advertised. Rick was on time, the boat was outfitted extremely well, the ride was very comfortable. Captain Rick really impressed us with his broad knowledge of the history, geography and nature of the area. He even recommended books for us in case we wanted to learn more. He also pointed out very interesting locations on St. John from the water and showed us where the most famous people lived and where various film scenes had been made. What impressed me the most were the feeling that Captain Rick could handle just about any kind of event that would occur and his intuitive patience with our family. We always felt safe, even with two small grandchildren (eight and six). Rick seemed to understand when we wanted more information, wanted to stop and snorkel more, or wanted to go ashore for a walk-about. He was exceptionally attentive to the needs of the kids, without getting in the way of the parents. I very much recommend Rick for a charter. We had a terrific time!

“Awesome day!”
Reviewed 6 May 2014

Captain Rick provides a fun day, allowed us to pick and choose our snorkeling spots and even did some snorkeling with us. He was very knowledgable about the beaches around the islands and what we might see there. We went all the way around the island of St John. It was a great day, best one in the two weeks we spent there.

“Second Trip Just As Good As The First”
Reviewed 5 May 2014

This was our second trip with Capt Rick and we had as much fun as we had the first time. We started out from Cruz Bay with a leisurely motor around Lind Point and past the Caneel beaches. We stopped at the Mermaid’s Throne (Chair?) for some pictures and a quick discussion about the plan for the remainder of the day. On our last trip, I had intended for us to go to the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost. Due to weather conditions on the day though, we ended up at Norman Island instead. Therefore this time around we decided to pass on a repeat Norman Island trip and head over to Jost directly. We stopped on Tortola to clear customs which actually took about 45 minutes since there was a long line of charter boats and a ferry waiting to clear. We wished we had brought some beers with us to have during the wait. We finally got our paperwork settled and headed across the harbor for a quick stop at Pusser’s for painkillers and the little market next to it for beer. Afterwards we motored across for a drive by of Sandy Cay and then we stopped at Sandy Spit. We swam over to Sandy Spit for a quick walk around and a few minutes just to soak up the beauty of the place. Then over to Foxy’s Taboo for a nice lunch. After Foxy’s we motored down the coast to the Soggy Dollar Bar. It was mid afternoon when we arrived and the place was a zoo. In my mind, I had pictured the Soggy Dollar Bar as a nice beach bar with a relaxed vibe. Not so when we visited! I had to work to order our painkillers and then I spent a frustrating amount of time in the super-crowded gift shop for souvenirs. The whole “experience” took so much time, we didn’t get to really enjoy the beach at all. We swam back to the boat and had a nice motor back across the channel to St John. Our last stop of the day was a snorkel off Leinster. We snorkeled around the point that, if you were on the beach, would be far to the left of Waterlemon. It was a fantastic snorkel stop. Then our day was over after clearing customs back in Cruz Bay and refilling the boat at the gas dock. Capt Rick is a fun host and tour guide and his wry sense of humor was amusing throughout the day. There was definitely a high fun factor for the whole trip. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Lion in Da Sun to anyone looking for a private day charter.

My family spent a day on Lion in Da Sun with Capt Rick on Jost Van Dyke, St John and Tortola and it could not have been better. He was friendly, knew a lot of history, and even took tons of pictures wth our cameras. It was a great day.

“Great trip Lion in Da Sun!”
Reviewed 1 May 2014

We had a great time aboard Lion in Da Sun! This was our 5th trip to St John and our 2nd boat trip. Captain Rick was full of knowledge but also let us enjoy ourselves without being overbearing at all. We snorkeled in some great spots, visited some beautiful beaches and had lunch on Jost Van Dyke. Boat was very comfortable for the 5 of us and we will definitely take another boat trip on Lion in Da Sun on our next vacation to St John.
