“Westin villa”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 April 2014

The villas are a long way from the pool/beach but they offer lots of space and room for a family to stretch out. They are heavily travelled and the rooms show wear in walls and carpets and cupboards. They have a full kitchen and access to a grill (villa 31xx, 32xx) as well as a small private pool.
Families that like the beach and pool area may opt for the hotel style rooms which are even more dated and wore down. We stayed one night in one.
The food is extremely expensive but of fair quality. The drinks also are quite pricey but so is all of St. John.
The ferry service is very expensive but if traveling with a family, very worth it. I didn't see our luggage from the airport until we landed in our room. A very appreciated luxury for a father of two with a wife who packs VERY irrationally.
DO NOT take the villa purchase bribe. It is over two hours of high pressure sales tactics for a chance to get your cash! The biggest low point for me, these villas should sell themselves, not be sold. Total used car salesmen tactics with multiple offers etc.
overall a very nice hotel, very nice location, very high prices food which is typical of the island.

Many thanks for your review and for your understanding of the cost of living on St. John. We appreciate your feedback regarding the wear and tear on the villas, and we will continue to perform routine maintenance checks in an effort to ensure our villas are in pristine condition. I was glad to hear you found our ferry transfer convenient but do want to apologize that you found the Sales Presentation to be too overbearing. Our Villas do in fact sell themselves, so I will speak to our Sales Team regarding your concerns. We appreciate your feedback and look forward to your next stay.

Family of four: stayed in the Hillside 2 bedroom villas. Took advantage of the Westin Ferry ($120 per adult, $90 per kid), decided it was worth it to avoid public ferry and taxis. Worth it and would recommend it. They took care of luggage and all taxis to and from airport. Ship staff is very professional! Upon landing at Westin, they give you your room keys, a rum punch and golf cart you right to your room. Very nice. Only problem is that your luggage will not make it to your room right away. Ours took about an hour. Ladies, pack a hairbrush and a change of clothes if you want to grab some drinks or dinner right away. I was a hot mess after sitting in the open air ferry! You can also ferry into St Thomas via the ferry as much as you want. The entire hotel staff was super kind and very professional. The golf cart shuttle drivers are wonderful. Yes, there is a lot of walking on this property, but just dial zero any time you need a quick pick up and they are at your door in minutes. The Hillside villas, while far from most things, have a beautiful view!

The villa was quite large. 2 bedrooms and 3 FULL BATHS! Nice. The kitchen was the only part that seemed a bit shabby. Older appliances and cabinets. While they have a full supply of cookware and dishes, etc… they don't provide any dish soap, Handiwipes, scrubbers, or coffee filters. Most timeshare type units at least give you a starter supply of kitchen cleaners. There was dishwasher detergent in ours, but I'm not sure if that's standard or just left from the last tenant. Plenty of TP, tissues, towels, beach towels. Unit comes with a washer/dryer/iron/ironing board/in room safe. There was a vacuum cleaner, but no closet to put it in, so it sat in the living room the whole time. (not exactly what I wanted to look at…) There are ceiling fans in both bedrooms and the living room.

Biggest thing to know about this property: YOU ARE LAND LOCKED! You cannot really walk anywhere on this island! There is no hotel shuttle into town. You either taxi or rent a jeep. Taxi rates are set by the island, so it's $5-12 PER PERSON, ONE WAY, to the beaches, etc… So, (if you are a family of 4 or more) if you go to a beach during the day, and dinner at night, you might as well have rented your own car! But, Here's what no one tells you…b/c it's a protected island, there are only about 750 cars allowed on the entire island, so even if you want to rent a car, they might not have any left and you are out of luck!!! Don't even bother trying the car rental company that the Westin tells you to try. They tell everyone to be there at 8am, and then only 2 people get cars. Just call DELBERT's HILL SIDE JEEP RENTAL at 776-6637. We called every jeep rental place on the concierge list, most people had none, Delbert always had some! And he will come pick you up and drop you off right from the hotel. $90/day! Totally worth it.
Careful driving, on the left side. Go slow until you get used to it.

Because we are platinum members, we usually get free breakfast. This hotel only gave a free continental breakfast for 2 of us. Couldn't get anyone to budge and give us 2 more, for the kids. Most managers will do this for us, but not Carlos. They really dug their heels in. And get this, the breakfast was only for bread products! No fruit, no yogurt. Just bread. Why argue so hard for such a chinsy breakfast anyhow? Sheesh! (The Sheraton in Key West did free breakfast for four and it was a hot gourmet breakfast buffet with bacon, Belgium waffles, croissants, etc..) i do think this hotel looks for ways to nickel and dime you…and it quickly turns into dollars! We didn't even use the free breakfasts. You can walk to the St John Market to get groceries, or drive into the larger Starfish Market. Prices are shocking. $6 for a bag of Lay's. $6 for a box of crackers. $12 for oscar meyer bacon. But cheap breakfast in room could be eggs, bagels, butter, jug of milk and OJ, etc.. Sam and Jacks sells homemade blueberry muffins for $1 each. We pulled a couple extra chairs onto the balcony and ate breakfast there. It was wonderful to listen to the birds, roosters, see the Iguanas, etc.

There is a $40 per day resort fee. What do you get for it? Nothing really. (free local calls, golf cart shuttles, beach towels, etc…)

The restaurant on site is crazy expensive! $16 for a caesar salad! I about fell off my chair when I saw that! When we left the restaurant after the first night, I saw a family eating off the lobby. They had a burger and fries (not on the menu). I asked how they got a burger. "Oh, that's off the BAR MENU" What? What bar menu? What BAR? So, now you know! Ask for it!!!

The property is beautiful! The pool is amazing! There is construction down near the beach, but it didn't bother us. We packed a big soft side cooler with freezy packs for the beach. Bought bottled waters, soda, then got deli sandwiches from Sam and Jacks. Wonderful!

Room Tip: Hillside Villas have a little pool to share with other villas. Beautiful view. Far walk. Call for go...

Thank you for posting your review. It sounds as though you and your family of four enjoyed your two bedroom villa, our private ferry transfer and our property overall. I do want to apologize that you did not have a starter kit in your villa. Our property does provide a sponge, dish soap, etc., at the time of arrival so I will speak to my Director of Housekeeping and ensure these are being placed in our villas at all times. In the future, please let us know if you need any products and we’d be happy to bring them to your room. We also certainly would’ve removed the vacuum for your convenience. Please know that the Platinum breakfast amenity applies to the Platinum SPG member and one additional adult. I was glad to hear other properties have made an exception for you during past stays but please understand we are under the direction of Starwood Hotels and Resorts and SPG to only honor the complimentary breakfast for two. I do apologize if you were inconvenienced by this. Unfortunately, the cost of living in the Virgin Islands is higher than average costs in cities across the US mainland and many other islands. It is estimated that on average, it is at least 33% higher than most US jurisdictions. Due to this, the price of food both on The Westin St. John property and in Cruz Bay/around the island is higher than average. I sincerely apologize if you found it to be overpriced. Again, thank you for your feedback. We hope you will return in the future so that we can provide you with an even more refreshing stay.

My wife and I along with 2 other couples stayed a the westin st john villas for 5 nights then my wife and I moved to the hotel poolside for an additional 4 night /21/14 left 3/29/14. I have to say our first visit to st john's was awesome!. from the start when Neal Lanclos, a staff member who works doing whatever you need plus shuttling guests around via golf carts was waiting for us the the ferry dock when we arrived. He was there anytime we needed him as well as several other staff members. The villa was a 3 bedroom which was nice, furniture was slightly worn but that is it. Everything else from the location of the resort to the staff, the weather, beaches, bars and overall experience on st john was great. Sue at the pool was very pleasant as well as the other staff waiting on us hand and foot.
I can't say enough about it. Even with the renovations ongoing there, we never heard or were bothered by it at all. Jan 2015 that should be completed. I cannot wait to return in 2016 to meet up with our new friends there. Oh! and Zozos in caneel bay, Asolare in cruz bay are super restaurants to try. joes rum hut, beach bar , woody's are all good bars in cruz bay . cab rides were $5 to most places. no car needed. We loved cinnamon bay as our best beach, although we did not get to trunk bay but it looked awesome to!. Worth the money!!!!!!

Room Tip: all rooms are nice villas & hotel both. hotel is next to the pool & villas are a short walk...

We truly appreciate your review and thank you very much for your kind words regarding our resort. Isn’t Neil great? He is a wonderful asset to our resort and will be delighted to know how much he enhanced your stay. I was pleased to learn that our current renovation did not affect your stay and that you were able to explore St. John and experience the beautiful beaches and great restaurants. Thanks again and we look forward to welcoming you back.

Lovely resort, restaurants fine, grounds immaculate. Swimming pools great. The resort beach is not hugh, but adequate..lounge chairs provided. We only go during late December, so I don't know how the weather is in other seasons. We take Westin pre-arranged (must request it)bus transportation from St. Thomas Airport which takes you to the ferry that you then take to St. John. A pleasant ride. Should you wish, you can take buses/taxis to take you to various other beautiful beaches (snorkeling is excellent) and restaurants and/or arrange for other tours. The town is quaint with numerous shops and restaurants. We always enjoy our stay. Parts of the resort are being renovated, but should not affect ones stay. Plan well in advance to be sure you get a reservation since most are time shares.

Room Tip: Best to stay in renovated or newer rooms...kitchens available in most if not all.Pull out couches i...

We ended up exchanging our timeshare in Orlando for a studio to go here in the middle of March. Everything was great except check-in which did end up until 6pm. A little annoying after traveling all day! Room was great and loved having the hillside pool! Make sure to rent a car and explore because there are so many beaches!

The beach cafe was also a pleasant surprise because the food was great and competitively priced to restaurants in town without all the hassle of parking!

Overall enjoy it and remember to relax!

Thank you for sharing your feedback and for posting your review. I hated to hear you were unable to get into your unit until 6pm. I can certainly understand your frustration after a day of travel. Thank you for your kind words regarding your room accommodation and Beach Café. We are working hard to ensure our restaurant is one that our guests enjoy in convenience. Again, we appreciate your review and look forward to the next time we welcome you as a guest to our resort.

We recently traveled to the Westin St. John with our four year old daughter. It's a great place to travel with kids -- fun activities and amenities for young children. However, while some of the staff was friendly and nice, others were not helpful or friendly at all. We had a mixed experience at the kids club, and didn't find the spa to be relaxing or nice.

We stayed here for the 1st time. We traveled with our 7 month old son and inlaws. They upgraded us to a 3 bedroom villa based on availability. The room that was considered the master bedroom had a very large bathroom with huge tub but the bedroom size very tight for me, my husband and son's crib. We stayed in building 25 which has a very steep hill. So going up and down it with a baby carriage is a bit challenging. Fortunately you can call front desk and have someone with golf cart come get you. But do be aware that if you are traveling with an infant. There are no elevators or ramps on property. Very hard to get around property with a carriage. If you are planning to eat at the restaurant, food is very good and staff very nice but they move at turtle pace. So if you have reservations skip this place. Also disappointed that they do not have buffet breakfast. We sat on beach at night and I ended up getting eaten alive by sand bugs. Bring bug spray!! And if you want to snorkel make sure to get up early or call the night before to reserve the snorkel kits. We unfortunately were unable to go snorkeling. It would have been nice if they had a free shuttle to market like they do in the Bahamas. If you are renting a car it is best to go to St Thomas to shop at Cost U Less for your groceries. They are the cheapest. We were able to get a weeks worth of food for 4 of us for just under $150. Cruzan Rum 1liter $7.99 a bottle compared to $12.99 at airport.

Thanks for choosing the Westin St. John and for taking the time to post a review on Trip Advisor. I was glad to hear you were provided with a complimentary upgrade and that you enjoyed the spacious three bedroom villa. While we do not have many elevators on property due to low floors, please note that our Bay Vista Villas (Buildings 24-27) do in fact have elevators going to the second and third floors. We are also required to have ramps around property for ADA requirements, but I do apologize if you found it difficult to maneuver your stroller. Unfortunately we are not currently offering the breakfast buffet due to the renovation of Beach Café. We will bring the buffet back as soon as our newly renovated restaurant reopens in June. We hope to welcome you back in the future to see our improvements firsthand and to enjoy our buffet. Thanks again for posting a review and we look forward to welcoming you back for your second stay.
