My mother and I stayed at the Garden by the Sea for a wonderful week in May. Your lodging can make or break your trip. It was a definite highlight of our trip. John and Nancy are incredible hosts. We were able to start each day with a delicious and filling breakfast. They were very patient, kind and generous with my Mother's eight million questions. The room was very comfortable, clean and had anything we could need, including air conditioning. They provided much appreciated details such as beach chairs, coolers, maps and personal recommendations of local restaurant, and many other recommendations. We appreciated being able to have refrigerator space, they had a bar for a very small fee, and cards/games for the common room. The deck was lovely way to start and end our day. The location couldn't have been better. A very reasonable walk to town. We preferred to walk to town rather than driving. It wasn't practical because of parking, to drive into town. Nancy, John and the lodging were incredible!

Garden by the Sea is a very small B&B on the edge of town. The hosts were wonderful and accommodating to all of their guests. We were only there for three ngihts, but we felt right at home. The decor was great (mosaic tile flooring in the patterns of local birds and fish, brightly painted walls that you expect in the Caribbean, "garden showers" in two of their guest rooms) and the atmosphere relaxing (calypso music over the speakers in an open-air common room). You are outside of the "hustle and bustle" of Cruz Bay, but within a ten-minute leisurely walk to it. At other B&Bs I've stayed in, the second B is lacking. But not here! A large, balanced, and yummy breakfast made fresh is what makes this place a little hidden treasure. The hosts gave their thoughts on places to go, and things to do, and even drove us to catch the ferries to other islands. However, paradise doesn't come cheap; the stay was kinda pricey, but a great compromise if you do not plan on renting a cottage or condo for a week. One tip: There is a shortcut to town via the Audubon Pond and Coconut Cove Gallery, which closes at 8:30 pm. The other way to get back to the B&B requires walking up a steep paved street and down again (which was comparable to some hills in SF).

The two of us stayed at Garden by the Sea for the second time in a year and a half, the first being on Thanksgiving week in 2007. This time around our hosts were John and Nancy, who we had met before, and who own GBTS. Our experience was once again excellent. John and Nancy make us feel at home, are so helpful, friendly and down-to-earth... perfect hosts! We again took great advantage of the free beach chairs, beach towels and coolers they make available to guests, and this time around there were even more helpful freebies, including a beach towel pad that doesn't pick up sand, and nice water bottles and ice packs that are extremely useful and help to save a few bucks a day by making it unnecessary to buy bottled water. We again stayed in the Terrace View room, but were given tours of the other two rooms, both of which have garden showers and look like great places to stay. Our visit was enhanced by a great pair of ladies that were staying in another room, and with whom we sahred some excellent Saint John adventures. The combination of location, price, level of accommodations, and quality of the hosts make Garden by the Sea an excellent place to stay in Saint John. Almost forgot the scrumptious breakfasts and the very cool "honor bar," even more bonuses that make GBTS a place we'll almost certainly visit again adn again!

Garden by the Sea is a delightful bed and breakfast, close enough to walk to the shops and restaurants in Cruz Bay but with a feeling of seclusion. The rooms are not elaborate but are very comfortable and tastefully decorated with an island feel. And the breakfasts are fabulous! From eggs benedict to egg casserole to homemade cinnamon buns with bacon on the side, we felt totally spoiled throughout our stay. The hosts provide great recommendations for restaurants, snorkeling, and other activities, and lots of reference materials about the island. As soon as we walk onto the porch of this lovely place, we relax and feel right at home. Excellent value!

We loved Garden by the Sea B&B! So cute and comfy. I was a little nervous about staying in a B&B as I had never done so before and didn't know what to expect, but the experience was great. We only saw one other couple that was staying there the entire 3 days we were there. We felt like it was our own private house.

Every morning, we got up to bananaquits eating sugar from the bird feeders and house geckos sunning themselves on the deck railing. We ate the complimentary breakfast overlooking a small pond framed by banana trees and palms. From the deck you can see the sea in the distance. Our hostess, Karen was very helpful, friendly and a pleasure to talk with. We had some issues with one of our flights and didn't make it to the B&B until 10 pm the first night. Karen had left the key and instructions for us at the front gate. It was a very easy and effortless check in.

We stayed in the Wild Ginger room. It was sweet and clean and didn't really feel all that much like a "rented" room. We had A/C that was a bit too cold for my taste, so we had it off much of the time. The attached bath was open to the elements via an opening in the ceiling above the shower. I didn't feel like anyone could see in as there was vegetation growing above the opening and covered the view. The bed was comfy, but only came with very light bedding and I could have used a blanket to cover up with.

The B&B provided access to snorkel gear, beach blankets and chairs (all for free). They also provided a shelf in the fridge for each room. This came in handy since we tried to make our own lunches, rather than eat out at expensive restaurants. The "living room" of GBTS is really charming and has great resources for planning activities. There is a mini-library of sorts that has lots of books and binders full of information. Karen is also a great resources as she's a local.

GBTS is located in a quiet part of Cruz Bay and there is a convenient trail that you can walk to Frank Bay and then into the downtown part of Cruz Bay. The total walk took no more than 10 minutes. In fact, we walked to the National Park building and one of the north shore beaches from GBTS. So, despite the B&B being tucked into a quiet neighborhood, we felt close to a lot of activities.

If you have any doubts, questions or want more info, don't hesitate to contact me. I'd love to share my experience...the good, the bad and the ugly. :o)
