I chose to visit the Retreat because six cruise ships were in port the same day we were and I really don't like to deal with crowds. Negatives: (1) It is tricky to find as apparently the natives call it the National Heritage garden, not the Retreat. (2) Although our bus (number 11) went right by the place, it only goes one way and continues around the entire island before returning to the port so we were advised to take a taxi back. Positives: (1) We had the whole place to ourselves and staff at the admin. building on site were very welcoming and helpful. (2) The place is pretty with palms planted in natural sinkholes, and earthen paths winding through the retreat's natural woodlands. (3) The Retreat provided a tranquil and scenic respite from all the crowds in town.
Is it the best garden I have ever visited? Not by a long shot but is it the best way to avoid the crowds in a nice natural setting? Absolutely. We were glad we went.
