Spent a long weekend at Bishop's Bonefish Resort, aka Bishop's Place, on Grand Bahama. We sort of found it by accident - we saw a great airfare deal to Grand Bahama and don't like crowded resorts, so we searched for an "out of the way" place. Bishop's fit the bill.

His small inn sits on a gorgeous 14 mile stretch of beach and it is likely that you won't see another person on the beach. His inn is simple but absolutely lovely. I have never had cleaner, more well kept accommodations than these. The room was incredibly clean, fresh, well furnished, and comfortable. The bedding and towels always smelled so fresh and clean - it made me smile! When we got sand on the floor, it was gone before we knew it.

We are used to renting large villas with private pools and having a bit of luxury on a vacation, so we weren't sure how we were going to like Bishop's. We absolutely loved it. His accommodations can't be beat. His beach can't be beat. The privacy and quiet were fabulous.

He and his staff were extrememly gracious. His restaurant/bar had great food and he makes an incredible Bahama Mama! We had a lobster dinner for $15! And it was delicious. Good lunches too.

As for other amenities, he provides you with chairs for the beach, and there is a little cabana that had some watersports for rent (kayaks, etc.) right out on the beach in front of you. They are also in the process of building a really cute beach bar on the sand at the water's edge. He said when it is finished, the party will move out there in the evening! They also offer fishing trips from the hotel.

It is far enough away from Freeport that you have no crowds, no people, but close enough to drive in and shop, go to the casino, or whatever else you may want to do.

I highly recommend this place for peace and quiet. With only 7 rooms, it would be a fun place to take a group too.

I visited Bishop's from 8/10/04 to 8/17/04 and have never had a more relaxing vacation. As a single woman traveling alone, I was somewhat apprehensive about staying so far away from everything (it's a 35 min drive into Freeport) but really didn't want the hustle bustle resort area. Upon arrival, Bishop (who picked me up at the airport), and his staff made me feel right at home. I was the only guest in the 7 BR lodge and it was sheer bliss. The rooms each have 2 double beds, a/c, cable tv, full bath, small refrigerator and coffee maker, dinette set, and NO PHONES. The rooms were immaculately clean - the tile floor mopped daily and dispite the promity to the beach, no sand on the floors at all! This was exactly what I wanted, clean, basic room with nothing but ocean and beach to greet me when I open my window blinds. My room was 20 steps to the beach. Until some others drove in from Freeport and Lucaya to share my beach, it felt just like that - it was exclusively mine and mine alone - HEAVEN. Beautiful clear blue water, soft sand, sun - simply awesome. To top it off, the restaurant next door, which Bishop runs, had the best food on the island - I tried cracked conch at 3 different places and Bishop's was in a league of its own. The minced lobster, at $12 with peas/rice and the best potato salad I have ever eaten, was the deal. The ribs were also great - not slathered in sauce like ours stateside but full of great flavor. I could go on and on. YOU NEED A RENTAL CAR if you wish to explore the island - I had no problems driving on the left side and maneuvering the round abouts. It's a good little drive but a beautfiul ride through pine trees and native settlements. Would do it over tomorrow - had absolutely no problems traveling alone - was treated with the utmost respect and care by the men and women. Very refreshing, relaxing and enjoyable - this was a real vacation.
