A 5 night stay at the Pelican Bay is all about endurance. The hotel itself is very colorful and nicely maintained. And that is about where the compliments stop. Staying at a hotel is all about the staff that services you, and the staff at the Pelican Bay is truly lacking in customer service. It took all our efforts to evoke a smile or laugh from anyone. Starting with the check-in; in which you were coldly told that you have no phone use from your rooms, you need to check out your towels for the pools, you need to sign for the locks if you want to use the rooms safe & there is no continental breakfast as sold to us as part of our package ($19 pp). The staff at the adjoining Sabor Restaurant was even ruder. Maybe it is the fact that we are American and our economy is shot and therefore their economy in the Bahamas is shot also. But, for an island that depends on tourism as its #1 economy booster, perhaps its citizens should act like they appreciate the tourists. We were one of the few tourists that flew in to the Grand Bahamas rather than taking a cruise ship but, all of our activities were based on the cruise ship mentality. If not enough people signed up, the activity was cancelled. Very frustrating! We ventured into the straw market area where many vendors were selling items and there was definitely no bartering going on. If you wanted an item, you paid the full price for what the vendor was asking. The fancier restaurants presented nice meals but, the ambiance and the wait staff were not friendly. We did manage to get some smiles from the bartenders at the pubs. And our housekeeping staff (Denise) was a kick in the butt (very outgoing). We vacationed here because we were looking for some laid back tropical fun. We incorporated many activities into our stay and were more than willing to overlook a few foo pahs. Would we go back....no. The islanders just weren't very friendly to the tourists.

Dear Cantoosing,
We are deeply disappointed that you did not share in the happy experience we strive to deliver each day to our guest at the hotel. We are naturally filled with smiles and are always ready to display our island hospitality to visitors and amongst ourselves.

On behalf of the Management and staff of the hotel, I wish to apologize for any inconveniences we caused during your 5 day stay with us. Without further details I am unable to determine why you were under the impression that there was no phone use, why towels had to be checked out and the issue concerning the safe in your room, but I would like to provide you with a clearer description of the amenities mentioned.
1.Phone use is available in the rooms, room to room and long distance/ local calls incur a charge. Form of payment must be on file for call privileges to be accessed.
2.Towels are available at the desk for our entire guest. Towel cards are given at check in and when needed exchanged for your towels.
3.We have two types of safes available on property, waterside rooms are equipped with safes that require a lock which is signed out from the Front Desk. Our waterside state rooms are equipped with digital safes that require you to enter your own password.

I can certainly guarantee you that this review has been distributed to our entire staff and Management team for review. I can also advise that it has been sent to a representative of our Ministry of Tourism department. We take each post, whether positive or negative very serious. Without your feedback we wouldn’t be able to continue to identify areas that need much improvement to prevent any future dissatisfied guest.

We would like to speak with you further. Kindly email della.bridgewater@pelicanbayhotel.com

Just came back from a 5 night stay at Pelican Bay and I'm ready to go back. My husband and I had a stateroom on the canal - beautiful living area, quiet bedroom, espresso machine - the works.

The location is great with access to the Port Lucaya markets and restaurants as well as just 5 minutes to the Reef golf course.

It's a tremendous value and won't disappoint.

This is the hardest review I have ever had to write – because it means admitting my wedding is really over. A group of 27 of us flew from Newcastle, England to Freeport for our wedding. The groom’s brother lives in Freeport and he recommended this hotel above all others in the Bahamas. I’m so glad he did! From a guest’s perspective: the hotel was amazing! All our guests were happy with the rooms, the staff were amazing! I was concerned about the buffet breakfast after some guests complaining about the food being the same daily. Yes, it does remain the same but caters for every different types of breakfast you could wish for – what more do you want?! The food was delicious in Sabors and the local restaurants – I must recommend a steak at the Greek restaurant in the square! The hotel is beautiful – truly Caribbean!

With regard to entertainment all ages are catered for! In our group we had guests aged from 3 to 70 and there was something for all of them! There are live singers on in the square daily, snorkeling, glass bottom boats, shopping, swimming with dolphins and shark feeding tours to name but a few! By staying at the Pelican Bay you are in the best location for all of these things! Onsite there are three swimming pools, a hot tub and luxurious sunbeds around the pool!

As a bride; all I can say is – you can get married anywhere; you are truly a bride at the Pelican Bay! From the months liaising with Marva Munroe (the most amazing wedding planner ever, who I now refer to as my Bahamian Fairy Godmother!), to pulling up in the limo being greeted with the grandness of the new Canal House, to the special welcome message in the reception. I felt like a bride every minute of everyday at Pelican Bay! The day of the wedding was perfect, Marva has a gift to capture your dreams and turn them into a reality! Luckily Lyndah Wells (the most amazing photographer in the world!) has a gift to capture the detail and all the precious moments. The food and the service for the Reception were absolutely fantastic.

I cannot recommend this hotel enough!

Stayed here for four nights in October 2011. We arrived three hours late with Bahamas Air due to FAA temporariy grounding of all planes, minus one lost suitcase which did not make it on our flight. Hence our mood was not the best when we arrived.
Front desk staff was very friendly and welcoming. First room we received was ground floor behind pool but door did not open, so I went back to ask for another room. Second room was on first floor but right in the middle of the restaurant area, so I went back to ask for yet another room. Third room we got was a great location, facing the "quiet pool".
The entire hotel is nice, all rooms are waterfront facing, but could use a bit of maintenance and upkeep. I understand times are hard and competition is tough in this area of island, but it does not cost much to clean the pathways and flowerbeds, to scrub of balconies and walkways. This could easily be done if management would check.
Room was very spacious and not much to complain about, except maybe the loud air fan in bathroom.
Be aware that Pelican Bay is not a beachfront property. You can either use beach across street (30 $ at hotel or free at police station entrance) or you can take free boat to another resort beach which takes 10 minutes and is my recommendation.
Breakfast was nice, bagels + toast, cheese + meats, fruit, yoghurt, coffee, juice in buffet style.

All in all ok value for money, but not as spectacular as I had expected.
Staff very friendly and helpful.

We stayed here over Easter break this year in April. It was our first time in the Bahamas for my husband and I and our 6-year old. We were pleasantly surprised by the hotel. Our room overlooked the infinity pool with a nice size balcony (we rented a stateroom) It was nice to have the breakfast treats and paper delivered to your room every morning. The room was clean and spacious with a great view. Our favorite pool was the Sabor pool, we visited there every day during our stay, and had dinner there one night. And the location can't be beat! Right near Unexsco and the outdoor cafe. Also, they have a boat that takes you to the Taino beach.

Room Tip: We loved the stateroom

The hotel is quiet, cozy and comfortable. The views are great the rooms are clean and the property is clean. The staff is courteous and kind. The location is perfect! The experience was enjoyable and memorable.

I would, however, stay away from their restaurant, Sabor, it is overpriced. Eat at Zorbas, next door, in the Port Lucaya marketplace. The breakfast is $19 per person which is a rip off.

I had a lot of fun there and would defiantly be back. It is the perfect hotel if you want to lay low and have a quiet and relaxing time. Other resorts on the island are a little nosier and busier.
