“A Nice Friendly Bahama Resort”
Reviewed 6 August 2011

The Ocean Reef is a nice, family friendly resort. It isn't luxurious but then it isn't expensive either. The staff was very, very friendly and we came to know them all by the time we left. It is rare, but by the time we left we were hugging our taxi driver Mr. Forbes and his son who coordinated our plans with us and were extremely friendly, reliable and genuinely kind people. I HIGHLY recommend them as renting a car is craziness in the Bahamas unless you already know how to drive on the left. It is always stressful to find places just under normal driving conditions; trying to learn how to do it too is NOT a good idea. Worth every penny to just arrange taxi cabs.

Our unit was #307 and had two nice bedrooms and a pull out bed, 2 bathrooms and a nice kitchen and deck. It was nice and we enjoyed it. Don't expect luxury though, but it is a typical Caribbean type of resort. The pool area was fun and it had a swim up bar that made it relaxing - and it all overlooks the yachts and the marina, very pretty area.

The restaurant was average, try the Dive Inn at UNEXSO, very good there. Our room was clean and we had plenty of towels and also pool towels were provided. The bedding was very, very comfortable and made sleeping a dream. Make sure to not miss the grocery shuttle on Monday morning - it will save you a lot of money in cab fare. We were planning to BBQ a lot and make our dinners, however, the meat at the stores there made me want to be a vegetarian, so we ended up not buying any of it and we went out to eat instead, plan on meatless meals unless you have a strong stomach for low quality meat. The restaurants all served up good quality meat however.

The staff was the best part of our stay and we enjoyed the resort and pool area a lot. Hattie, Esther, Preston, Ray and most importantly, Mr. Forbes were the best.

My husband, daughter and I stayed here with my sister and her husband (their time share). We had a 2 bedroom suite, not a renovated one. It definitely needs some updating. It's nice but could be better. The housekeeping service is $25 a day and you have to request it. So, you are there for a week and you have to make your own bed. Who wants to do that on vacation! We didn't get the master bedroom and the room is the size of the bed and there was no boxspring on the bed! When we called to complain they said that its not supposed to have one. They said they would have to order one and we could have one Monday morning. Well, we never got the boxspring, they put an egg crate on the mattress and thats what we were stuck with for the week. Being we were with timeshare holders we thought we would have been treated a little better. The elevator did not work all week. The pool is not kept very clean. I suggest renting a car, because a taxi will cost you $10-$15 one way. If you do take a taxi, use Hayward, he's usually stationed at the resort. The timeshare people are very pushy and if you don't accept they are rude to you afterwards. Esther is in charge of activities and she is relentless. Do NOT go to the fish fry on Wednesdays, it is a complete waste of your time and money. The service is horrible! The Grouper restaurant on site is sooooo slow, you will seriously wait at least 20 minutes for a drink. There is a free shuttle to the beach Monday-Friday at 10AM. Just beware that cruise ships also use these beaches and they get very crowded!! It's not a bad place to stay but we would not stay here again if we ever visit Grand Bahama Island again.

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated unit

The resort is isolated and a taxi or car is required to go anywhere, even just to shop. The room was in need of some serious TLC, it was roomy but very shabby, showing signs or wear and tear. The furnishings were uncomfortable and grubby.
The restaurant 'Groupers' was a joke serving under standard food at riduculous prices. The bar staff were less than helpful and had very limited supplies of drinks availalble that were again overpriced. When ordering at the bar getting service stook forever due to the staff being on the telephone or chatting with other members of staff.

I travel to this resort in the past and it was run down, in June 2011 I decided to give it a second chance due to the pics on their website and them indicating that they have made some renovations. Well the place is still not up to par. Blinds in my unit did not functioning , I had to turn each sleeve manually by hand, tiles on floor were chipped. Bathroom vanity were in bad condition. We rented bikes that were falling apart. The place is just not kept. Beer bottles were laying on ground for days before being pick up. The gym were fill with outdated machine and only had 3 dumbbells varying in weight. I had to carry a ton towel quite a ways to exchange. stool by Ester were broken not sure why they don't just toss out the broken items, it just make the place look worst. The 2bdrm condo was good size. i would ask for item and was told I'll look into it but no one ever got back to me. The railing around the dock was broken.

The resort was nice. Very Clean and fully equiped kitchen with dishwasher and dishes. We had the villa/condos 403 & I think the other unit that had the washer and dryer was 402. The resort provides dish washing liquid and paper towels. There is a shuttle to the beach Dave the driver is a character. LOL. I was not able to get fruit on a tropical Island. Beaches that I went to were rocky. Check With Heywood Forbes for reasonabley priced tours. I had a really nice time in the Bahamas but I will not be rushing back. I AM A JAMAICAN!

Room Tip: Check with Heywood for reasonable price in tours

This resort is fabulous. The management will ensure that you have a very nice vacation Cindy in the front office runs this place like nothing that you have experience before. I have been to this resort over 15 times and I continue to go back every year at least twice a year. This place is like coming home to a family reunion each and every time I arrived. Ray the resort manager will provide you with excellent service to ensure that your stay is a most pleasant one. My family all love this place and look forward to visiting every Year. Mr Dormas the owner will always discuss the resorts improvement with every person that he encounters. What a pleasant place to visit with your family. I Love this place!.

We just returned from a wk at Ocean Reef. I was skeptical after reading past reviews. First let me say...the units, including kitchens are ABSOLUTELY fully cleaned between guests. As a former reviewer emphatically claimed they were not, we wasted valuable storage space on our boat with cleaning supplies we did not need! We were very pleasantly surprised at the cleanliness of the unit. Anyone who does any homework will know that units are not cleaned during your stay unless you choose to pay the very reasonable addtl cleaning fee. Plenty of clean sheets and towels are provided if you wish to change out linens. We had extra trash bags in all rooms, bath soap, dishwasher soap and extra toilet tissue were all provided. Ck in after hours by Ray was prompt and pleasant. We did not use any of the shuttles but they did seem to operate regularly. Never saw any dogs loose on the property at all. There were four cats that lots of guests chose to feed either with fish from the marina or cat food, leftovers etc. They were not under fed at all and we have become used to cats on most island visits.
The staff at Ocean Reef will go out of their way to be sure you enjoy your stay! We were greeted with nothing but smiles by everyone (with the exception of a young lady at the desk). Grouper Grill was a fun place to hang out by the pool, grab a snack or a full meal. If Michelle is cooking you can't go wrong with the snapper any way she prepares it! What an asset to the Resort she is. The Bartenders are always pleasant and greet you with a smile.
Is ORYC a glitzy resort? No it is a condo style property with an on site marina. Not Ritz Carlton style nor cost. Go with realistic expectations and you should be fine! We had a townhouse with a washer/dryer. The charcoal grill just off the patio was great (one for every 2 units) The patio has tables and chairs for dining/relaxing. Kitchen was very adequately stocked for the # in your party. Paperwork clearly states if there is something you need, pls ask at the front desk for it. We did not need to and cooked several meals of freshly caught fish with no problems. Nice large new fridge. Stove/Oven/Micro/Dw seemed older and worked just fine. We would have loved to have a beach out front but there is not one and it is clear to anyone who researches Ocean Reef. Taxi cost at hotel was higher than we paid a driver whose card we had from a prior trip. Not ususual for in house drivers on GB. We'll be going back to ORYC and hope to see the same smiling and helpful staff there. Many Visitors last wk were not there for the first time!

Room Tip: One level units seem recently updated
