Went here with horrible expectations but this trip turned out to be GREAT. My friends and I (21,21 and 23) decided to go here for spring break and it was a great choice. It was not spring break weeks and we still had a blast. We are all college students all we wanted to do in was drink, party, and have fun. Must say MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. The room was good flat screen TV no fridge or anything. Bathroom was EHH not so great but clean. We didn't spend much time in the room anyways since we used to wake up at like 9 and return back to the room to change clothing but to sleep like 5 or 6 am. Food was not great but also was not horrible. The selection of food needs improvement. Pool is great a little cold now but we must keep in mind the weather is nice its not SUMMER hot yet so just stay in pool. Drinks were amazing specially the Bahama mamas. we tipped all the bartenders from all bars so our drinks were flowing like crazy. Shots, drinks, beer, it was just heaven. Never had to wait on line for a drink because the bartenders already knew me.

If you are young the hotel they save some entertainment but the real entertainment is OUTSIDE the property. They have all kinds of parties such as fish fry which is Wednesdays and then other things on the other days following up. For the girls Bahamian boys are some cuties ;) get at them.

Beach is gorgeous but WAY too many rocks. In the afternoon when sea levels rise is best because there is actually sand in the water and not rocks. So many sports to do like kayaking, windsurfing among others.I went Jet skiing for free which is so much fun but this is not included and I personally think its a scam. Its $70 for 30 min.

Location of the place is far from everything but just take a cab.

This resort is NO LUXURY so if you are looking for a luxurious resort this is NOT the place for you. If all you want to do is have a good time I would recommend. Ive been to way better resorts and honestly the extra money you pay for is for the luxury of the hotel. They all offer the same things. At the end of the day you make your trip what you want it to be.

Took an excursion to the hotel from a cruise ship. Good food inside, small glasses for the "all inclusive" atmosphere. You could buy a larger cooler toe cup in the hotel gif shop that the bartenders would fill just as easily.
Pool is nice, beach is nicer, food on the beach was ok at best but the buffet inside was good and plentiful.

My husband and I stayed a week at the end of March/ beginning of April

Upon arrival we tried to talk to the person at the front desk to find out about the room, but no one at the front desk even smiled. They weren't friendly or helpful, rater rude.

We paid for a beach front room, which we did not get until the third night and we were told that it’s up to us to get the refund from Cheap Caribbean. The Viva Wyndham Fortuna Resort will not notified cheap Caribbean that the upgraded room was not unavailable and that we did not get the what we paid for until the third night. The room we were given the first night was a shabby room. I tried to ask if there were any rooms were available in the buildings closer to the beach/pool, but we were already slated for building C, which is farthest from everything, and there was no further discussion.
Like I said, our room was back in building C with a view of some grass and trees, no beach in sight. The bathroom was pretty cruddy though, and the towels were paper thin with some holes and stains in them.
We were told that they will move us to the ocean front room next day. Not true, the next day we were told they don’t have an ocean view rooms available. We refused to stay in this dirty room for another night and we asked to speak with guest services manager. Loyda from guest services was very helpful and very apologetic. She showed us another garden view room but in the A section which was little better room and promised to move us one more time next day , and she did.
Finally we were in the room that we paid for, but half of the vacation we spent on packing and unpacking. That’s not how I imagine my vacation.

The one saving grace for this resort is the beach.. The water was clear and the coral was pretty. We spent most of the time on the beach.

We will never go back to this resort and would not recommend to our friends.

My wife and I just returned from our Bahamas vacation. Viva Wyndham Fortuna is a fabulous place to have a vacation. The staff was helpful and friendly. Have a hard time understanding some of the reviews-- we thought it was great! Would recommend having your meals buffet style over the theme restaurants. Beach was tremenedous -- our room was about 30 feet from the water. It was nice to leave the sliding door open at night and listen to the waves. Definitely will consider returning!

Room Tip: Second floor- ocean view

Viva Wyndham will not tell you this, but they allow TONS of cruise ship passengers to come to the resort. You can tell them by the different color bracelets (green). We arrived on a Saturday. No early check in. No drink on check in.
We did pay extra in advance for a superior ocean view room. Well worth it. We got a room in the Bimini building which has great views. We had a wonderful experience Sunday. We were able to find decent areas on the beach. Drink lines were short. Stay away from the beach bar food. Very long wait and it is worse than McDonalds food.
I forgot to mention I am here right now. I am writing this in the main bar since that is the only wifi available and there are no lounge chairs open on the beach!
**** THERE ARE CURRENTLY 2 CRUISE SHIPS FULL OF PASSENGERS AT VIVA ***
Of course, the website makes no mention allowing extremely large numbers of cruise passengers on the resort. I literally counted 3 to 4 green (cruise) bracelets to every one color of actual residents here. The towel shack ran out of towels. No open chairs on the beach. No sports equipment (snorkels, mask, etc). Beach bar had 30 minute waits and ran out of pineapple juice, which is all I wanted. When we went into the main restaurant (Junkaroo) for lunch, the line was backed up to the door. Everyone in there had a green bracelet. Our supposedly reserved seating area since we had booked on cheapcaribbean was full. It took a 10 minute wait and a request to a staff member just to have a table bussed so we could sit down.
We went to complain at guest services that the website makes no mention of large numbers of cruise passengers coming to the resort and that our last two days have been ruined since we couldn't use anything on the resort. We were told, "we don't need your permission to have the cruise passengers here. It is part of our business."
Don't expect Viva guest services to do anything for you. We complained that the occupants in the room next to us kept smoking (In a non smoking building) and we were told "it is common sense.". I don't know what she meant by that. She said she would pass on my comments to the manager. I asked if the manager would be contacting me and of course the answer was no. Which means, nothing will be done about any of my concerns.
I would have give this resort 4, maybe 4.5 stars solely for the beautiful beach and friendly staff in the restaurants and beach areas. Frank at the beach bar and Sanjay at the sport shack are awesome. The cruise ships ABSOLUTELY RUIN THIS RESORT!!!!!!
Ask yourself why I would be inside on a beautiful 82 degree day to write a review unless I was truly disgusted by the situation!

I have been going here for a week for over a decade. I've seen it decline and seen it come back. The last couple of years Fortuna has been on an upswing. This current year of 2012 has seen it reach a new peak. Room upgrades are very good. There has been a major improvement in the food quality. We are not talking 5 star, but for an all inclusive hotel it has certainly moved up a notch or two. The staff has always been friendly and good and remains so. You do have to remember that you are in the Bahamas and things are on Bahama time, so the pace is slower than say, New York, but you don't get the back talk you do there. So if you're high maintenance please stay else where. In summary, you will get more for money than any other place I am aware of in Grand Bahama.

My mom and I stayed at this hotel for 5 days during the last week of March. Our check in was quick (we arrived at 5pm) and without issues, but also without much of a genuine welcoming feeling and friendliness. We found the followings points disappointing -

1) Hotel check-in - not very cheerful or welcoming
2) Hotel room experience - First hotel room in Cayas building (5000's) had an unnecessary built in kitchen. Since this is an all-inclusive, we found this feature odd. Additionally, the connecting door in the hotel room wasn't sound proof at all. Hotel mgmt did let us change our room to a quiet area - Abaco 6000's. This room didn't have a kitchen (woohoo) and it was clean, comfortable, shower had good water pressure and temperature, and even offered a partial ocean view for a garden price.
3) Buffet Food quality - OK to good. Some of the lunch/dinner options were disappointing - instant mashed potatoes, not many exciting healthy choices, and most of the options were 'comfort foods' loaded with cheese, fat, sausage/bacon, lacked nutritious ingredients, and lastly very little Caribbean cuisine.
4) Bar lines and beach bar lines were sometimes really long. It was spring break week so maybe that's why.
5) Some of the lounge chairs at the beach were broken and usually they were ALL taken by 10am, so you have to arrive early to put your stuff down.
6) Restaurant reservations have to be made at check-in and even then you are not guaranteed a reservation for same day or even the next day. Although the reservations are fully booked, the restaurants were not. We counted 11 empty tables at the Italian restaurant one night.
7) Weather - March isn't hot. The weather was about 80F each day and when the sun hid behind the clouds it was just plain cold. Plus it was windy a few days which didn't help. I'd recommend going in the summer months (Jun - Aug).
8) Day time music - I like to read and enjoy hearing the sound of the waves crashing and birds chirping. Unfortunately, this isn't always possible because during the day time there is really loud music playing in the pool area. Again, not sure if this is a regular occurrence or a special Spring Break thing, but it was a bit annoying since we were going there to relax, not to party.

The good points now -
1) Evening entertainment - Fantastic!! Really fantastic! This is the 4th all inclusive that I've stayed in and the first which actually had great evening shows (Michael Jackson show, Latin night, Couples Show, Trapeze). The dances were very well choreographed and the show staff very friendly. They put together a great bon fire beach party one night, a meringue party, and a white party (clothes obviously) another night. Music was great and everyone was having a very good time. We also really liked the diversity of the show staff and their energy! Great job everyone!
2) Piano player - Fantastic! There is a guy that plays the keyboard in the evening at the large bar. He is really good and also very nice. He did a great job of playing the main theme song from "Love Story."
3) Bartenders & drinks - Good. Even though the lines can be long, the bartenders still serve up good drinks. They don't make mojitos, mimosas, or fancy looking cocktails/martinis with fruit and all, but they can still serve up a good Sex on the Beach, Tequila Sunrise, or Rum & Coke.
4) Trapeze - Good. Day time trapeze show is cool to watch and probably really cool to participate in if you have the guts to do it. The trapeze staff teach vacationers how to get up there and swing like a pro.
5) Beach - Beautiful! You can walk miles in almost both directions. The beach has a beautiful, soft, white sand and gorgeous light blueish green water. There are no neighboring hotels, only beach homes, so the beach is always quiet in both directions. We saw a really big pelican, some tropical fish while snorkeling, and a small sting ray directly from the shore.
6) Espresso Bar - Really good! The baristas made really good cappuccinos and espressos. Those were probably our most favorite beverages at the hotel.
7) Restaurants - We enjoyed the restaurants more than the buffet. The food was much better and the staff were polite and efficient. A bit more friendliness wouldn't hurt though.

The great points (especially entertainment, beach/ocean/walks, and baristas) made up for the OK/disappointing points, so on an overall we had a nice time. We would go again if we can get a better deal price-wise (under $650 pp for 4 nights). If you can get a good deal, I say go for it. If its expensive, then maybe you should look elsewhere. You may be disappointed if you pay too much.

Room Tip: Room in 5000 - 6000 Abaco buildings are really quiet. Ground floor will be more convenient then 2nd...
