On the whole, we enjoyed our vacation at this resort and came home feeling well rested and stress free. Like the other reviews we had problems with check in. Some booking services have space for special requests, maybe that would be a good place to inform the hotel in advance if something is really important to you. If you have a problem, I recommend being persistent but friendly. I actually liked the buffet food, there was sufficient variety and it was kept very clean. The beach was beautiful and snorkel equipment is free. There are tennis courts, archery, kayaking, cycling, all free and pool/snooker was checked out from the reception for a returnable deposit. Choose your bicycle carefully, some needed to be fixed. The free drinks at the bar were good and there's self serve wine in the restaurant. Taxis have set prices so don't worry about being ripped off although some taxis were filthy dirty. Room service is lax but tip them a little and things pick up quickly, same at the bar. Evening live entertainment was a little tacky but fun.

Room Tip: Some rooms are a long way from the center of the resort, so let the hotel know if walking is an issu...

My wife, Ellion, and a couple of dear friends recently enjoyed a fantastic week at the Wyndham. We were able to relax on a nice beach with many frozen cocktails, which was our intention. We were also able to participate in a variety of offered activities including an attempt at the trapeze, water polo, bocce, and yoga. The resort staff was excellent all week. The breakfast chef was able to accomodate my dietary requests and there was enough food available throughout the day to fulfill my insatiable appetite. Sure I could complain about not having hot water in the shower one day, flat tires on the resort bikes, and not being allowed to wind surf because it was "too windy". But, all the fun and memories we had throughout the week, certainly makes up for any minor issues, we may have encountered.

Let us start at the beginning. Upon arrival the hotel staff is less than friendly. We arrived about 1:30 pm and found out check in was not until 3:00 pm. They made you stand in line and wait to fill out paperwork, In our case we filled out the paperwork and approached the desk and waited for 30 minutes. Then they finally looked up and motioned us foreward. After about 10 minutes looking at the computer they said they couldn't find our reservations and told us to move over. We waited and watched until everyone had completed their paperwork, then they motioned us forward again. The reservation was somehow in our childrens name. The reservations were made for ocean view rooms with one having double beds and one having a king size bed. They then wanted all passport numbers and all the home info that was already on the reservation re written on the reservation forms. This process took over an hour. Disorganized and ineffecient would be a complement to the front desk staff. We were not even offered a cold drink or cool towel upon arrival, as is customary in other resorts. We were given a map and our room keys. On arrival at our rooms we found it to be not a king ocean view and a double ocean view, but two doubles with a view of the trees. When we complained they said too bad that was all they had and we could request new rooms. We asked for a refund for the fees paid and was told that was all they had and it was due to late check in.
The rooms were dated. The beds did not fit the bed frames and leaned to one side that was not supported by the rail. There was one one liter bottle of water in the refrigerator that was not working. We requested more bottle water and were told to buy it at the store next to the front desk. We had only only one towel and no soap. We called the front desk and asked for more, it arrived 2 hours later.
We noticed that at night the lighting of the buildings and walkways was poor and a security hazard. Our building only had 2 lights on the walkway.
The staff at the was not friendly or helpful. Housekeeping had thier own schedule. One day they did not show up at all, another day they arrived at 6:30 pm to clean the room while we were getting ready for dinner. The last day they arrived at 8:15 am reminding us check out was at 11:00 am.
The beach had nice sand and was clean. The seaweed being cleaned up and removed each morning. The water was good, but was a very rocky bottom and you had to be careful without water socks. The locals walked the beach and constantly came up to you and tried to sell you things or told you they wanted you to go and get them alcoholic beverages. All the while the seecurity guards stood by and watched.
There were two restartuants where reservations were required. One was Italian. We had reservations at this restaruant for 8:00 pm. We arrived 10 min early and were seated. Their were only 3 other families/couples inside. They dropped the menus in the middle of the table, filled the water glasses, and brought over some bread. We then waited for 20 minutes before someone took our orders. The appitizers arrived in about 15 minutes. We then waited 45 minutes for our main course. The food was fair and the service was terrible. This was repeated at the Asian restaruant next night.
The main buffet had certain hours of availability, so you had better get something during that time frame. It was not air conditioned. It did not have good ventilation and was extremely hot. The food was fair, with two buffet style line with the same items, salad, desert, and a grill. The fish cooked at the grill area was the best thing we ate along with some of the deserts.
If you wanted something when the buffet was closed there was a grill/bar by the pool that had burgers, hotdogs, pizza, fries, and drinks. If you got anything watch out for the seagulls. I watched a lady put her tray on a table and turn around to grab something in her bag and approx 20-30 gulls desended and took her food. There is also a pizza bar open from 10 pm - 2 am.
The entertainment was much the same as the rest of the resort. The trapeze show was the best and the comedy show sucked. The entertainment staff was just as friendly as the rest of the resort staff.
The only process that went quickly and efficently was checking out. They want you to leave and get the next sucker in.
We have stayed at many all inclusive resorts in various locations. This is by far the worst one I have encountered. Staff is not happy, service and food are terrible. I would not recommend this resort to anyone. Don't waste your money here.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else, don't waste your money at this resort

We had a terrific week at Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach. My wife and I were celebrating our 20th Anniversary and were travelling with another couple. We wanted to have a relaxing and fun week with most of our time spent on the beach. We had some concerns after booking the trip and reading several poor reviews of this resort. My friend reached out to Guillermo Lachapel the GM of the resort before we arrived to let him know we were celebrating our anniversary’s and expressed our concerns about the reviews we had read. Mr. Lachapel responded immediately and went out of his way to make sure we had a great time at his resort. He greeted us when we arrived that next week and on our anniversary day had his staff at Viva Café prepare a special romantic table for us. It was amazing and my wife was surprised and loved it. Overall the staff on the resort was friendly and positive. Here were some of the other highlights for us:
 Late night pizza next to Viva Café is outstanding
 Bartenders are fantastic and had no problems filling our large Tervis Tumblers for the beach
 Breakfast omelets made each morning by Judith were terrific and she was a charming woman
 The beach is great – we had no issues getting chairs and did not find big problems with the cruise ship crowds
 Fish Fry nigh in Freeport – great food and fun dancing with a good mix of tourists and natives
 Snorkeling trip was a blast and we saw a ton of exotic fish etc…
I would recommend this resort to any couple looking for a good value, fun time and great beach!

We booked this resort with an air package and let me tell you, what a SCARY, SCARY DUMP!

When we arrived at 1 AM, there was no service to the hotel, so we waited for an hour to get to the hotel. When we arrived, we were given a room and each time we went to enter our room, the keys would not work. We went back three times, a ten minute walk round trip, each time, to try to get keys which worked. When we received a new room, there was a security guard in our room, in the dark, doing drugs!!! He jumped up to stop my boyfriend and I and we had to fend him off. We reported it to security, but no one ever would take our complaint. The room was so dirty and run down, my boyfriend and I were so overwhelmed, we tried to leave the island, but beware, no flights go out over the weekend on Jamaica Air. The room was actually right outside their trash dump!!!

The food was always cold and there was never enough! Please, please, please avoid this hotel. I would mention the beach, but when you contrast the room, the hotel, and the food, the beach just can't make up for this nightmare.

Not to be completely negative, there was one positive, there was plenty of alcohol!!!!

If I had to write an adverstisment for this hotel it would be great for people who like to stay in a dump, which can't guarantee your safety, doesn't care to, doesn't offer decent food, but has a beach with bottom shelf liquor, this is the place for you!

As my boyfriend told me when we FINALLY got off the island, "Well, baby, you get what you pay for!"

After reading other reviews I was not expecting much. Went there for 9 nights to go diving so wasn't looking for much else. Boy was I surprised. The staff was fabulous! The least friendly/helpful were the front desk people but everyone else went out of their way to make sure we had a great stay. There were tons of activities to keep my 24 year old son busy when not diving. Plenty for me too. The nightly shows were entertaining--some were really good and some were not so good but the staff gave it their all. The food was plentiful with a huge variety at the buffet. There were specialty nights several times with specially prepared items. It was not 5star gourmet but just fine. The specialty restaurants weren't very good but it was nice to sit down and be served for a change of pace. The asian restaurant was very relaxing. Things happened slowly and not always on time but it's a different culture with a different pace. I would go back there and feel I got way more than I paid for.

My wife got us in on Groupon, very reasonable rates. The all you could eat food and drink (including adult bev's) was fine, the chefs accomodating, with great fresh fruit-veggies and delicious fresh fish and great conch salad and soup! The health club could use a bit of an upgrade, but the young Italian staff member helped with equipment, water, towels, and more than made up for any short coming in equipment age.
The resort is not 4 star, it is modest, but the staff from registration to sidetrips to their fun evening shows were eager to please and make our stay a good one. They had a trapeze, and it was a hoot to try and to watch others as well, with a careful and well-trained staf to ensure 100% safety.
Beach and pool were 4 star; and the snorkel and boating free option plus the for fee diving options wre top rate.
Hosuekkeping was perfect-- and they waitied for us to go out before coming in, and even if we just went for a quick breakfast bite, when we returned it was ready.
Water was pristine....angel fish and others swimming right up to the shore at times... no one pushing anything on us to buy but lots of opportunities at the resort and in Freport itself, a very clean and lovely port town. Bikes available for free to ride the 4 miles from the beach to the city...their is even a bike lane..
Their English is probably better than mine (I am from Chicago!), and it was fun to mingle with the crowd from all over the world; lots of Italians and other Euro's; South Americans; even some New Yorkers seemed to enjoy themselves.
Kid friendly with a kid play center run by staff but plenty for adults to do at all hours.
Flew CHi to MIA, then to Freeport City about 1/2hr from MIA...airport in Freeport 10 min. ride to the resort..
Excellent in terms of Value....I would recommend to a friend without hesitation.

Room Tip: We asked for a room with an ocean view and we got one.
