“Pay a little extra for a nicer resort”
Reviewed 26 June 2014

Let me start by saying I never write reviews, but this place was so bad I feel like I have to. My friend and I made the most of it and still had a great time, but we also spent about 300-400 more because we went off the resort for at least 1 meal and drinks every day.

There are bugs and bees everywhere outside, worms in the 'halls' to hotel rooms, saw a few cockroaches as well. Cups and plates littered walkways, they were still there 3 days later. Outside of the hotel room is disgusting. The only reason we were okay...the hotel room didn't seem that dirty and we had one of the 6 amazing view, right on the beach hotel rooms, so that made up for it. The handle to our sliding glass door was broken completely off, thank fully the latch to lock was still on as we were on the first floor. 2 days the maid did not bring towels, it took hours and multiple phone calls to get fresh towels.

The food and drinks were aweful. If you've already booked bring some snacks. The dining hall doesn't keep things as cold or as hot as they need to be. A tub of mayo would have a little bit of melted ice water at the bottom. If you got there any time after the first hour it was open you are taking your chances on what had been replaced, still available. The drinks, little tiny plastic cups filled with ice and totally watered down, and the ice tasted funny. We ended up buying bottles of wine from the restaurant or going to the sand bar or banana bay for food and drinks. Sand bar is about 10 minute walk to the right...super cute place, good food and fun locals. Banana bay is about half and hour to the right down the beach...amazing secluded spot with sand bars and some beach chairs. If you've already booked I recommend you go to both of these places, will make up for the aweful conditions at viva. The Italian restaurant was closed the night we tried to go. Bamboo was okay, not the worst but not too much to select from. The snack bar is a joke. Hamburgers, hot dogs, and fries with flies everywhere.

They say sports equipment is available...well they have 11, yes 11 snorkels and masks, some of which are broken. Needless to say we never got to use them. They have maybe 4 -8 kayaks. Didn't get to use one of those either.

Long story short, pay extra for a better resort of you haven't booked yet. If you have already booked you can still make the most if it, bring your own food and drink or buy it somewhere on the island if you don't want to pack, if you can't afford to pay outside of the resort. Walk down to banana bay for prettier water, the water by the resort is still beautiful, although a lot of their beach chairs are broken. Sagging down or the top won't stay up. Bring water shoes if you get squeamish, lots of seaweed and rocks, coral to walk over.

We had a good time, but only because we made a conscious decision to not complain while there, and we went off resort for food and drinks.

We recently stayed there with some friends and had a wonderful time! The ambiance was great and the beaches are beautiful! The food and drinks were very good. The entertainment was fun, but a little over the top for children. The rooms were comfortable and we had a great view of the beach. The service at this resort was terrible. The check in process was way too long and the staff was very rude, especially at the bar! I was hoping to find some nice staffers who we could get to know and could be pleasant and fun, but no one stepped up. I would go back, but just be more weary of the staff.

I don't even know where to begin. When we arrived and went to our room the bell man went to open the door and the handle came off. We started unpacking and there were just bugs everywhere. When we went to leave the room we tried to lock the door and the lock was totally shot and wouldn't lock so we had to have someone come and fix it. If you want wifi you need to get lucky. It's the strongest at the right side of the beach and sometimes in the "rec" area. The food in the buffet was absolutely disgusting. Don't be surprised if you swallow a few bugs. We came to the point of just not eating there anymore. The lady at the front desk said that the Asian restaurant had sushi so we were all looking forward to that until we were disappointed with none on the menu. There were bees all over and I am very very scared of bees and was definitely very close to getting stung multiple times. Oh and just to prepare you, bring straws. There's absolutely none at the hotel. I ordered a pina colada and asked for straw or spoon and the guys response was "you want to drink this???" like yes please that's why I ordered it? When going to bed the first night we pulled down the beds and there were hair and eyelashes in the sheets, and obvious indication that the sheets were definitely not washed. We called the from desk for new sheets and 15 minutes later someone just delivered them and we had to put them on ourselves. There are also no trash cans in the rooms (well the two rooms we had at least) and there is coffee packets on the bathroom counters, yet no coffee maker so I'm not really sure how to figure that one out. The AC in the room literally woke me up every 30 minutes while sleeping due to how loud it was. Oh and lastly if you want to buy drugs well that beach is the place to do so. Just head on over to the big tree near the right side of the beach. They continually harassed my family about it. On a positive note, finally, there is in fact a pizza place open from 10pm-2am there and it is definitely the best food in the place. But yes, we finally did switch hotels to Memories about 10 minutes away so save the trouble and money and just go book a room at Memories right now. It was all inclusive and definitely a 4-5 star hotel.

When we weren't in our room things were great. Possibly the most beautiful beach in the world and so close to the beach front rooms. Kayaking, paddle boarding, hobie cats, water polo, beach volleyball.... staff does a great job engaging the guests without being pushy (Kudos to Carlos)
We found the food to be quite pleasing. Maybe we had a great week, or there have been improvements, but the variety, and quality exceeded our expectations.
Now the bad. Housekeeping management needs a quality program! While there are plenty of beach towels, we had to call every day to get enough towels, we'd get them but had to ask. We were never given shampoo....when we ask, they brought us a conditioner with the label torn off. Maintenance seems overworked and understaff. There's a rumor that a significant update will occur later this year... I hope so.
As a tip, take plenty of toiletries, a couple of bath towels and wash clothes.
I hope Wyndham implements some management training and quality programs. This could easily be a 4 or 5 star locale.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a beach front room

When looking at the reviews prior to leaving- I was greatly hoping that I would be able to add a positive note to the soaring amounts of negative reviews. Unfortunately I cannot. My family and I still had a great vacation, but it was of no aid to the resort. An additional note that's important to add is that we were considered VIP because we booked early.. and with that comes some advantages.
Pros:
-The beach is great
-There are beds on the beach which is awesome
-Snorkeling is good from the beach as well; we even saw a barracuda, sting rays and squid
-Drinks are good and very strong
-Trapeze night for entertainment was very good.
-Beds in room are comfortable and air conditioning is excellent
-Snack shack is very good as well. The girl that works it is awesome!

Cons:
-Service is not good at all. We usually make friends with bartenders and such, but most of the staff made it clear they did not like us. It was pretty uncomfortable...My mother witnessed a physical fight between a worker and a guest.
-Drinks are good, but bring a thermos because they give you small plastic cups filled with ice.
-Not clean. My brother in law saw the cleaning lady in his room sweeping his bed with the broom used on the floor. They don't change your sheets unless requested.
-Food.... awful. awful. awful. At the buffet and Italian restaurant the food is 3 parts bread/potatoes/carbs, 1/2 part meat, and another 1/2 part vegetables. It was very hard to feel satisfied because most of the food was just carbs. Also, at breakfast they always recycle the meals from last night. Their hashbrowns are chopped up french fries from the night before. Also, most of their food is cold and they don't restock very quickly. Quite often they ran out of coffee, all the good food (which isn't much), cups, and bowls. In the buffet as well we were always searching around tables to find silverware because they were hardly fully set.
-Bugs are annoying. There's A LOT of bees at the beach, in the VIP bar, and other lounging areas. But there's really not a whole lot they can do about it.
-Water: it's very hard to get water... you only get two a day in your room and they are very reluctant about giving it out.
-Vendors are annoying... Every day we heard a lady say million times: "Hey mama want your hair braided?!" And she would yell at you half way across the beach.

I'm sorry for it being such a negative review. If you're already booked, just make the best of it. When you're with good company you'll have a good time no matter what. We stuck to the beach, had many drinks, and stuck to the snack shack for lunch. We had a good time this way. But if you're considering this place- don't have it be your first pick.

I have to say, if you don't expect a 5*, you won't be disappointed! Check in time is 3pm, so don't expect to get in early. I don't know why people complain about things that are clearly stated. Our bed frame was broke, but they fixed it immediately when we brought it to their attention. Room was exactly what we expected . Beach, we loved we didn't have to get up early to find a chair, plenty to choose from. It would be nice if they had a staff member at least rake the sea weed off on the beach though. We walked everyday at least 1.5 one way and may only pass 3-5 people! The late nite pizza from the brick oven -YUMMY! I would so rather stay at this 3* with less people then an over populated beach and resort at a 5*. We will be back next year with a group of 20+ people , I do hope they get some updating done :-)

We were a little worried after reading the negative reviews, but were pleasantly surprised. The resort staff are very friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately you cannot check in until 3pm on the dot, so if your plane arrives early, prepare to sit around for awhile. And once they finally gave us our keys, and walked to the farthest room possible, with all of our luggage, upstairs, with no elevator, with 2 kids, or room wasn't even clean! Our door was cracked open, with the housekeeping cart outside, with no one in sight. We had to wait about 20 more minutes before she showed up with pillowcases and towels and told us it was clean.

Our room looked nice upon first glance, there were some obvious upgrades....new sink, lights, etc. However, there were some major flaws with the room. The sink drain was clogged, the shower handle did not specify hot or cold direction and took FOREVER to figure out where hot was and then to actually get hot, the walls were dirty, and I actually had to fix the toilet several times myself. The chain inside the back tank was so rusted, it kept falling off. We did not receive a bath mat until the third day and we never got any washcloths. The beds were clean and soft and there was new tile and a nice tv. The glass sliding door to the balcony was broke, as well as the closet door. The electrical outlets were falling apart as well.

The rest of the resort was great. The pool was perfect and the activities were fun. We even did Zumba in the pool. The beach was nice, except for the constant harassment of people trying to sell shells, hair braids and time shares.

The food was hit or miss, some was good, some was awful, but we were never hungry, there is food offered around the clock.

The resort is kind of out of the way from Port Lucaya, the hub of Freeport. It's gonna cost you to get cab rides, about $20 each way, but the drivers are friendly. (Tyrone was our driver and he was awesome!) There were opportunities to purchase tours on site, which we did and had great experiences.

We were happy with our visit, but if knew then what we know now, we would have chosen a resort closer to Port Lucaya marketplace. If we return, we will probably try Memories. We felt like we got our money's worth, but would be willing to pay a little more to not have to fix toilets on vacation.
