Let me start by saying I never write reviews, but this place was so bad I feel like I have to. My friend and I made the most of it and still had a great time, but we also spent about 300-400 more because we went off the resort for at least 1 meal and drinks every day.
There are bugs and bees everywhere outside, worms in the 'halls' to hotel rooms, saw a few cockroaches as well. Cups and plates littered walkways, they were still there 3 days later. Outside of the hotel room is disgusting. The only reason we were okay...the hotel room didn't seem that dirty and we had one of the 6 amazing view, right on the beach hotel rooms, so that made up for it. The handle to our sliding glass door was broken completely off, thank fully the latch to lock was still on as we were on the first floor. 2 days the maid did not bring towels, it took hours and multiple phone calls to get fresh towels.
The food and drinks were aweful. If you've already booked bring some snacks. The dining hall doesn't keep things as cold or as hot as they need to be. A tub of mayo would have a little bit of melted ice water at the bottom. If you got there any time after the first hour it was open you are taking your chances on what had been replaced, still available. The drinks, little tiny plastic cups filled with ice and totally watered down, and the ice tasted funny. We ended up buying bottles of wine from the restaurant or going to the sand bar or banana bay for food and drinks. Sand bar is about 10 minute walk to the right...super cute place, good food and fun locals. Banana bay is about half and hour to the right down the beach...amazing secluded spot with sand bars and some beach chairs. If you've already booked I recommend you go to both of these places, will make up for the aweful conditions at viva. The Italian restaurant was closed the night we tried to go. Bamboo was okay, not the worst but not too much to select from. The snack bar is a joke. Hamburgers, hot dogs, and fries with flies everywhere.
They say sports equipment is available...well they have 11, yes 11 snorkels and masks, some of which are broken. Needless to say we never got to use them. They have maybe 4 -8 kayaks. Didn't get to use one of those either.
Long story short, pay extra for a better resort of you haven't booked yet. If you have already booked you can still make the most if it, bring your own food and drink or buy it somewhere on the island if you don't want to pack, if you can't afford to pay outside of the resort. Walk down to banana bay for prettier water, the water by the resort is still beautiful, although a lot of their beach chairs are broken. Sagging down or the top won't stay up. Bring water shoes if you get squeamish, lots of seaweed and rocks, coral to walk over.
We had a good time, but only because we made a conscious decision to not complain while there, and we went off resort for food and drinks.
