ROOM: We spent a little extra and got a 2 bedroom luxury suite - one br with king bed, one with TWO full, and pull out sleeper sofa, so we were able to sleep two teens and two adults and everyone had their own bed! The room was enormous, with a dining area and a wrap-around balcony that gave us views of the ocean, the main entrance and the market area across the street. Our room and the building we stayed in was very attractive and clean. They need to do a bit better at cleaning things like shower areas, where there was some mold or mildew in places. Not enough to be a problem and sad to see as it is easy to fix (Tilex anyone?). The FITNESS CENTER/GYM was the best I've ever seen at a hotel or resort - top notch equipment and facility. It is at the far north end of the property past the lighthouse. If the hotel is reading this, break down and post some good pics of the equipment so others can see how it's a great place!
NOISE: Ok, the one real beef we had, other than the cold weather (January, our bad) was that for 3-4 days some air handling equipment on top of the main lobby building went into squeak mode, so we had to fully close the balcony doors even tho we didn't want to.
SERVICE: generally a bit warmer than many have reported previously, but we did run into a few staff that were aloof at first. I learned however that if you worked at being friendly, people would usually come around. Times aren't great these days in the tourist industry, so please be generous when tipping - we found it was greatly appreciated.
FOOD: While very expensive, the room service menu was pretty good - we ate in one evening - and I have to tell you the pork chops was the best food I had the entire week we were on the island ( I believe it's from the Willey Broadleaf restaurant downstairs). Like others have noted, best place to have breakfast is Zorbas in the market across the street - recommend the coconut french toast. The China Beach restaurant on the hotel property was fancy looking, but a completely underwhelming experience food wise, as was Agave and Sabor, the restaurant at the Pelican Reef hotel, where I would however recommend the fried Conch, which was good. NOTE!: the "Kitchenette" in the suites only has a microwave and frig - no cooktop! After a run of so-so meals out we went to a local supermarket got some groceries and made BLTs inside with creative use of the microwave...one of the best lunches we had on the island.
ACTIVITIES: Dolphins - Our youngest teen went on the assistant trainer experience with the dolphins (UNEXSO) - if you can spring for the money, highly recommended. Instead of a few minutes in the water with the dolphins, you're there most of the day assisting the staff in feeding them, etc, and you get some fantastic quality time with them. If your kid is young, one parent needs to go too; they charge a much smaller amount for you to tag along. Scooters - please do not underestimate how fast they can go or how confusing driving on the "wrong" side of the road can be, particularly when making turns. A friend of ours almost crashed headlong into a car on a turn and went home with some huge bruises as souvenirs. Just go slow at first and remember that the RIGHT lane is the passing lane down there, so stay to the left when cars are around. Snorkeling - despite the cold weather we took in the scooba diving offered at a desk down in the lobby of the hotel (the building we were in, not the lobby proper). For a little extra, you can get wetsuits which made a huge difference in the chilly water. Recommend you bring your own snorkel and mask, as their masks all leaked a bit, which made trying to dive down a bit tricky.
All in all, a real nice vacation, but next time we'll come when the weather and water is warmer!

This has to be one of the most relaxing holidays I have had in years!! We were generously upgraded to a sea view room and I would recommend paying a little bit extra to have a view of the ocean. Very spacious rooms, balcony big enough for pre-dinner drinks (!) and an adequate bathroom. Michael, the best bartender in the world, prepared the best cocktails, delicious. He was also a fountain of knowledge about the island and gave us good advice on day trips. The beach was spotless, the sea glorious and the infinity pool clear and cool. Lobster pizza was simply outrageously fabulous, as was most of the food on offer. I would advise going out of the hotel for breakfast as this was a let down. All the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. I would recommend this hotel to families, couples and singles looking for relaxation and pampering in the great spa. Thank you to GM Ben for looking after us so well.

Room Tip: Ocean view fifth floor up to get the best view.

My wife and I took advantage of an inexpensive package to do a 5-night stay at this lovely resort right on the ocean. The grounds are immaculate, the staff friendly, the beach well-maintained -- the perfect place for "getting away" for a few days of sitting in the sun or reading under an umbrella around the serpentine pool. For daytime fun, jet-skis, para-sailing, Hobie-Cats, snorkeling and some other water-oriented pass-times are available at added cost. We para-sailed and loved it! What a gorgeous view of the azure blue ocean below and the island itself from up above! Nothing scary about it -- do it! Restaurant-wise, best was China Beach, on the resort grounds, where we had lobster, salmon and duck on different nights. Wine list is nothing special, and wine prices are expensive, but the food makes it worth it. A one-minute walk directly across the street from the Grand Lucayan is Port Lucaya, the newer market place that was built after the "International Bazaar" (closer to downtown Freeport) was beat up by Hurricane Wilma in '05. Lots of shops of all descriptions at Port Lucaya and some good restaurant choices, as well. We happened upon an early-bird special at Cappucino's -- a selection of nicely-prepared pastas, bread and oil, and a glass of wine, all for $10! We sat on the outdoor patio and enjoyed the soft evening. Sure beat Michigan for a January 12! We did a 1/2 day tour of Freeport that was nothing to write home about -- a stop at a rum factory, a 12-acre botanical garden and seeing the homes on "Millionaire's Row" were the highlights, but the rest was no big deal. This is a fantastic time to visit a place like the Grand Lucayan. The Bahamas have been hurt big-time by 9/11, Hurricane Wilma and the 2008-to-present economic doldrums in the US. The Grand Lucayan and other properties are aggressively (through price) wooing visitors. Take advantage of it and GO! A tip -- At the hotel an upgrade from "island view" (interior of island) to "ocean view" is $50/night. The package we got included an "ocean view" (includes a balcony) upgrade for $99 for the entire six days we were there. Look for that detail in a package you're considering. The ocean-view room was very nice and the view gorgeous. We were on the 6th floor, which put us above the palm-trees for an unobstructed view. Attached photo was taken from our balcony.

The hotel itself is very nice. Very friendly staff, clean and has an awsome beach. Many options for watersports (additional charges applied). Internet was free. It also has a nice gym and total body conditioning classess (if you are into that). Our order didn't include any meals. However, it was the only place we could it, since the food outside was much worse (two food poisonings on two different occassions). My advice: if you really want to go to Freeport,Bahamas, it's a nice place to stay. However, I will not come back to Freeport, because the food was really bad. (Hardly any fresh fruits or vegetables and I had serious concerns regarding the freshness of the meat products).
One time I woke up in the middle of the night, because the music was too loud.

I visited with friends in November, 2011 and had a wonderful trip! I enjoyed it so much, I am returning for a week in February. I found all of the staff to be friendly and accomodating. The views from our oceanfront room were incredible. We enjoyed wandering around the market and met some wonderful local vendors. We really enjoyed Pieces (restaurant in the Market) and ate numerous meals there. The breakfast buffet at the resort was good and very filling! I must say that I am baffled by some of the negative reviews as they certainly don't reflect my experience!!

The best part of this overall rip-off vacation package associated with a horrible time-share pitch was this property, a bit of peace in an otherwise very very aggravating trip.
The beach was gorgeous. The staff were so friendly, in fact, the Bahamian people were amazing, so down to earth and friendly. Loved our taxi drivers from the port to the resort and back.

The room was clean and spacious for 2 adults 2 children. Comfy beds. Nice double headed shower! We weren't allowed to have a cot though d/t fire regulations. The restaurants we tried on the property were Irie's cafe and the breakfast buffet which were both fabulous. My Mom got sick and the staff were so helpful getting her to medical care. Interestingly, the medical care was great- a crappy run down hospital but they knew what they were doing. (I have a medical background) (Btw The insurance bought through the cruise package refused to assist with the medical costs, they found some loophole!!!)

We did an excursion to Garden of the Groves and that was a rip off tho...overpriced- not run by Bahamians but some entrepreneurial Canadians I heard. (the food was good there but they had a captive audience and 14$ for a hotdog!!!! whaaaa?)

We were only there 2 nights but wish we could have stayed longer! If we come back, we'll fly here and not on some dingy inefficient cruise line. Freeport area restaurants and shopping were fun too when we had a chance.
