My family decided to vacation on Grand Bahama Island rather than make the longer trip to Nassau. We stayed at the Grand Lucayan which is situated right on the ocean Southeast of the city of Freeport. The property was touted on Book-it.com as a "4.5 Star Luxurious Beach Resort" and on the hotel's own website as "a resort you'll never forget." Technically true - but not for reasons they would like.

The hotel is situated on a lovely piece of ocean-front property. It has a nice clean beach that overlooks the beautiful aquamarine ocean the Bahamas are famous for. It appeared, however, that the property had seen better days. It seems that the property used to have a larger footprint but has allowed some of the rooms on the East end of the property to remain empty and simply decay. Immediately to the West of the property was an adjacent resort called the "Memories Grand Bahama Beach and Casino" an all-inclusive resort which we understood had been a part of the Grand Lucayan at one time, but has been "leased" to another company.

That said, there are certainly pros and cons to the "laid-back" culture that prevails at the Lucayan. On the positive side, most of the staff members we met were genuinely friendly and relaxed. Although some were downright rude and made us feel like we were bothering them. On the negative side, "laid-back" can also mean long waits and what many people spoke of as "Island-Time." It's what I would term very long cycle-times. If there are only 1 or 2 folks checking people in at the front desk and a long line, we didn't see any effort to add 1 or 2 more during a heavy check in time to shorten the wait. As a result, it took us almost an hour to check in. The resort also adds a 15% gratuity automatically to food, drinks and many other services so their folks were not necessarily incentivized to provide "memorable service." They get their tips anyway.

At one of the on-property restaurants we waited a good 50 minutes to be served dinner - they were not full, but still struggled to keep up.

The carpets in the hallways were dirty (best guess -- ground-in sand staining the rug).

The handle on our room door fell off in our hand when we arrived. And even though we told them about it was never fixed.

The sheets on our bed were simply too small for the bed. (There were no fitted sheets in either of the two rooms we stayed in for the week.). The sheets pulled up and off large sections of the bed each night.

On the "too small" theme, the shower curtains were not long enough to reach into the still old-style tubs. This defeats the very purpose of the curtains and gets the bathroom floors fairly wet -- subjecting the bathrooms to a lot more wear and tear than they deserve.

Our TV movie system in our room did not work when we checked in - in either of the rooms that we had - and when we asked for it to be hooked up - it rained 2 days straight and there wasn't much to do on property or on island in the pouring rain - we were told that someone would get it to but ours wasn't fixed for 2 days and the other room was never fixed. Even after countless requests to do something about it.

Getting a towel at the pool was also a fiasco - they ran out if clean towels. When we asked how long it would be they said "around 15 minutes." After 30 minutes and no towels we asked what the estimated time for the towels to arrive and they then said "we don't know." After approximately 45 minutes some 10-12 towels arrived. It was only then we were told one towel per card. So if you forget your card -- no towel. Something someone staying at a "luxurious beach resort" shouldn't have to be worried about.

On our check out day we exited our room and checked our bags with the bell men. We then went out on a boat (See our 5 star review of our Exotic Adventures boat trip) and after the 1/2 day boat trip went back to the resort to change for our trip home. They told us that they had a changing and shower area just for our situation. Great was our response...except that the area was dirty, dimly lit and...although it has shower stalls...it had no soap, no shampoo and no towels! Hmmm. My wife ended up showering with no soap, no shampoo and drying herself off with paper towels. Not optimal...

We have stayed at many beach resort properties in the past, but rarely have we been disappointed to the extent we were with the Grand Lucayan. A beautiful island no doubt, some nice people (the bell men and cleaning folks were very nice and efficient) but we wish the hotel could have been a better experience for us. Sadly - we would give it two stars at most in its current condition.

Hello Michael,

Thank you for reaching out to us on TripAdvisor. I'd like to apologize that you did not have the best experience. Although you found some of our staff friendly and our beach pristine, I'd like to apologize for the slow service you received at check in, and at our restaurant and for running out of towels at the towel hut. We require our guests to check out a towel with a room key to prevent others who are not staying at the resort like day-pass visitors from using the towels.

Secondly, I'd like to apologize about your door, the TV Movie System and your experience in the changing room. If you would be so kind to e-mail me your name and room number I would like our maintenance team to look into it to resolve the issue for future guests. Also, if you have any other concerns you may send them to that e-mail too. Thank you again for sharing your feedback with me.

This place was a dream come true. Everything was beautiful. The service was great. The beach was breath taking. Our room was clean and beautiful and the oceanview was amazing. We chose to enjoy the shops and restaurants across the street. I tried the casino but it was nothing like I expected. This is a great place for couples and families. Picture perfect. If all you do is work, then this is the vacation you need. This is the dream you need to make a reality.

Room Tip: When you go shopping always haggle and then go to the other little shops and see who gives you the better deal. Its worth it.

My fiance and I visited July 29-August 1. Four wonderfully relaxing days. If you're used to a fast paced life be prepared for leisurely service. While we were there a lightning storm hit the island and we were left without power for about 30 minutes, then a while the next day the entire city was without power as some things were being repaired.
Pros: delicious food at Iries restaurant, all inclusive totally worth it, beautiful pools with amazing views, spacious rooms, great little shops and eateries directly across the street. You feel safe while out and about.
Cons: the most beautiful pool by the Lanai suites isn't well maintained as the seagulls see it as their own bird bath, the beaches wash up lots of seaweed which isn't taken care of like at other resorts, the Waves bar & grill was never open while our stay, and the bathrooms by there were also closed too early. Not much privacy for couples. China Beach restaurant not worth it.
Overall we enjoyed our stay and would return.

Our first visit to The Grand Lucayan was an excursion from an NCL ship. We were so impressed with the beauty of the resort that we returned the following year for an extended stay. We returned in July for the third time and enjoyed it very much. The view from our balcony was amazing. The rooms are very clean and spacious. The atmosphere is very relaxed. We have never eaten at the resort because we have heard negative remarks about the food, cost, and service. We found a restaurant across the street at the marketplace (LeMed) with great food and very reasonable prices. The only downside is check in, but even that is not a problem if your prepared. We wear our bathing suits, (although there are changing rooms), go across to LeMed for some crack Conch, and hang out at the beach until our room is ready. We're there to relax anyway. We have already planned our return trip. We have been to many Carribean Islands, but we have enjoyed this resort as much as any of the more distant islands and at a much more reasonable cost. I would recommend this resort to anyone who is looking for a chance to relax, and enjoy beautiful surroundings.

Room Tip: Make sure you get an ocean front room. The view is amazing.
