Our stay at Small Hope Bay exceeded every expectation we had. This was a true island experience. We wanted a family vacation in the Bahamas that would give us a true island experience, and wanted to expose our kids to a different culture at the same time. The staff at SHBL went above and beyond to adapt to our schedule, and made it one of the most relaxing trips ever. We have children 14, 12 and 7, and all of them thouroughly enjoyed Themselves. There was something for everyone, and most of all, it was very relaxing. The island itself is also very friendly and safe as we ventured off on bikes to Captain Bill's Blue Hole, which is a great expereince and highly recommended. The local people are very friendly and helpful. The food at SHBL was better than any vacation spot we ever visited, and there was plenty of it. The only negative part of our visit is that we could not stay longer.

If you are looking for a family vacation, where you can relax, eat well, and get the full island experience, all at your schedule and choosing, then SHBL comes highly recommended.

When we looked at a Bahamas vacation, I found SHBL first, and never looked at another website, and after visiting it, I would say that there is not a better place to stay.

My wife and I went to Small Hope to celebrate a big (unidentifed) birthday. We were not disappointed, notwithstanding unseasonably chilly weather. The lodge offers a true getaway vacation. There are no phones or TV's in the rooms. There's no TV in the public space that I am aware of or at all for that matter. The internet gets turned off during cocktail hour to encourage people to socialize.

We spent the bulk of our time meeting new friends and exploring Andros Island including several of the blue holes and lagoons. We rode bikes all over the island and spent a fair amount of time indoors in the main lounge taking advantage of the comfortable setting and fireplace (it was chilly). We debated whether or not this would be a good kid's vacation (we have two) and decided that there was plenty to keep them occupied as long as you were prepared to pay the fees associated with diving and fishing. There also appears to be enough of a critical mass of guests so that enough kids show up randomly so that they can make friends and entertain themselves.

Fair warning -- if you want the Four Seasons this isn't it. Instead, it's a relaxing Island getaway without a lot of pretension. The staff is great and the food is good. Enjoy!

Thanks for the great review Liam! I agree that this is a great getaway from the hustle and bustle. And you are right - this is a great place for kids. Plenty to do, see, and discover. It was great having you here and celebrating the birthday with both of you. We all hope to see you two again soon!

My spouse and I did an in-depth search of opportunities in the Florida Keys and the Bahamian Islands for a place (a) to catch bonefish (me, mostly) and (b) to engage in any number of other activities (the two of us) such as snorkeling, hiking, working on a tan, and simply relaxing. In the end we decided to book an all-inclusive 5-night mid-March 2013 stay with Small Hope Bay Lodge and add their 3-day bonefish package. The decision to do so involved a combination of season (our availability versus that of the bonefish), the variety and nature of activities offered (in addition to fishing), transportation options, cost, reviewer ratings (especially TripAdvisor), and probably other less tangible variables. We found our choice was fine – could not have been better for us, and we loved every aspect of our stay. Our beachfront unit had a comfortable king-size bed, an air conditioner which we did not use, shower, a supply of fresh drinking water, and daily housekeeping services. The unit itself was finished simply in a genre appropriate to the character of the locale; e.g., exposed beams, wood stud or stone walls, colorful batik curtains, pillows, and bed spread. The meals varied daily and all were simply excellent; a full bar/beverage selection accompanied each of the main meals and was available at other times as well. Every evening before dinner, the guests and SHBL staff gathered at the tiki hut to socialize and give the staff the opportunity to ensure each guest’s activities wishes for the next day and beyond if appropriate are planned into their schedule. Families with youth/younger children were assisted with childcare around meals which made it possible for dinners to be “adult only”. We found our fellow guests included many repeat-lodgers, and our experience was such that we felt it was better than an even chance that we would repeat, too. The staff at SHBL arranged for a very patient and professional guide to ease successfully a first-timer (me) into the art of bonefishing. My spouse and I also went hiking, eco-touring with one of the SHBL staffers, and made good use of a pair of very comfy hammocks. As I said – we had a great time and hope to return soon.

We spent 5 happy days at Small Hope Bay last week and had a terrific time!! Our group of 7 ranged in age from 83 to 11. Jeff and his staff bent over backwards to accommodate all of our needs including my brother's request for fresh coconuts which they delivered to our table twice a day. And they treated my 83 year old mother like a queen! We enjoyed the food, especially the conch fritters, the rum drinks and, most of all, the fabulous peanut butter pie! For a group with a wide variety of interests, Small Hope offered a little something for everyone - snorkeling, scuba lessons, biking, massive ping pong tournaments and just all around relaxing. It was great having other families there as our 11 year old had a ball hanging with the other kids. What a wonderful experience for us all!

It is easy to see why this resort is listed in the book "1000 places you must see before you die" as well as being cited in the NHY Times as a must see resort- It is quite wonderful and unique for divers, walkers, fishermen, bird watchers, relaxers alike. This is confirmed by the scores of visitors who return every year- some for 20+ years. The staff is wonderful. You will make friends of other visitors from day one.

This is NOT a glitzy Atlantis type resort... and that is to its favor. You learn to relax, contemplate and do activities as you please. You can be as social or a alone as you wish. The staff and owner is very accommodating. The food is local and superb. Drinks are included. On my visits I have met wonderful people from many occupations, preoccupations and countries. While there you are truly treated like family. Kids and animals are welcome and are a part of the experience. We plan to return often

Small Hope Bay Lodge is a fantastic all-inclusive hideaway for anyone who loves the beautiful Atlantic Ocean and the peace and serenity of a remote island. The lodge is an awesome throwback to another era -- all stone and wood, with fireplace, outdoor terrace, pier with dive shop, and quaint rustic cottages along a private sandy beach and pristine shoreline. I just returned from a two-week stay on my own with my doggie Penny the poodle, who had the joyous run of the place while I went diving. Great staff--so accommodating, friendly and totally professional. Jeff Birch and his team rock! Shout out to Linda, Fedi, Erin, Tony, Rinaldo, Dennis, Nicky and everyone there. You folks feel like family. Great for kids and grown ups too. Put away the TV and pull up the hammock! The dive training and dive sites are also superlative. I can't wait to book my return trip. Love to all, Annie and Penny

This place is awesome!! Our first trip to the Bahamas, and we choose Small Hope Bay Lodge as it provided a good family experience. Were able to fish, learn to dive, and mostly... RELAX. Family of 5 with children ages 6,9,12 and we were welcomed with open arms and felt like part of the Small Hope family. Very comfortable atmosphere, food is superb, service first class, beach is immaculate and fishing is great.

Have already booked for next year, which is something we have never done with any other place we have traveled (so much world to see, why go to same place twice?)
