“Wonderful Island Getaway”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 January 2014 via mobile

Arrived 17 Jan 2014 for weekend getaway. Beautiful Island with friendly staff. Loved the landscaping, oceanfront accommodations and professional staff. The food was wonderful (fresh fish/stuffed lobster) and the atmosphere was intimate and casual. The beach is clean, wide and very private. The water is blue-green and clear. This is a special place.

I don’t generally trust Trip Advisor reviews if only because personal taste in food, style, décor and what one considers “luxury” varies so vastly. Someone may deem a resort “perfection” and by that description alone, the first question one should ask is “according to whom and by what standards?”

But Kamalame Cay deserves a write-up for something else far more substantial than what guests normally rate.

One of the things one expects when booking a holiday at a remote, private island where the reservation staff gently makes it clear that “there is minimal technology” is… there will be NO technology (read: contact with the outside world is purposely limited). And while this admittedly takes some getting used to, it's not a bad thing.

At Kamalame Cay, we stayed in a lovely, secluded cottage and our children had a smaller one, blessedly, on the other side of the island. I won’t go into the amenities except to say that our room appointments were charming, comfortable and stylish in a “Jonathan Adler meets the Caribbean” kind of way.

Each staff member at Kamalame Cay was not only genuinely kind but the service impeccable and indeed something to write home about – had we been inclined to write to the outside world.

But our biggest take-away was something intangible. While we expect to disconnect with the world and ultimately re-engage again with our families (or whomever we choose to holiday with), we forget what a gift that time together is. Sitting there actually talking to our children over meals, on the resort's private beach or after a snorkelling expedition-- instead of pondering whether they might need surgery to have their iPhones removed from their person, was the best part of our stay at Kamalame Cay.

Kamalame’s role? Every person and aspect of this resort-- its location, setting, amenities, staff, owners and fabulous managers, facilitated this "gift". It’s actually done on purpose. It's a resort where all the distractions of the outside world are stripped away so that one is made to feel beyond privileged and not just in the obvious and expected material way.

We liked it. Very much -- enough to recommend that others try it, if only to write their own “unbiased” review.

p.s. Kamalame Cay kindly provides insect repellant in every room to ward off insidious sand flies who WILL bite. Word to the wise —use it.

11 months ago we were planning to spend our New Year’s Eve at Kamalame but a medical emergency forced the delay of our trip. Kamalame generously held our place (crediting us the difference in rates) and we finally made it there in mid-November. You can tell by the effort you must make to get to the resort that this is a very remote and isolated place and if you choose to visit Kamalame please expect that it is such. The island is 93 acres of raw beauty. It will have seaweed and some unusual insects. You will also see, as discreetly as possible, a very large staff putting forth a massive effort to keep these things from interrupting your visit. You will have the most amazing clear water sparkled with fish, rays, starfish, and sand dollars. You will have a tranquility you have rarely known.
My husband and I spent 10 days here. His journey was to perfect his fly fishing technique and to catch bonefish. Thanks to his guides Fleming, Shawn, and Greg he was quite successful and, on one particular day, he caught 30 bonefish. All of these gentlemen were very knowledgeable and dedicated to their client’s success. Nothing was too much trouble if it brought a fish in the boat. Because we were there for a while my husband had the benefit of being exposed to 3 different guides with 3 different styles. What a grand time he had.
My journey was to restore and relax. I had several exceptional spa treatments with Chantal and Avon in a remarkable structure perched over the ocean. I walked miles on the beach and waded through the clear water. There is a deeper water area more conducive to swimming near the marina and I used that beach when I wanted an actual swim. I kayaked through calm waters. I read, enjoying the silence of being unplugged. I gazed at the water almost hypnotized by amazing beauty of the unspoiled area. I thoroughly enjoyed talking with the staff as many had been living on Andros their entire life. As the days passed I could feel my blood pressure drop and my breathing slow down. It was a magical time.
I totally agree with the positive comments about the staff, the food, and the accommodations and I can absolutely recommend this resort. I know we are looking forward to, hopefully, many return trips.

This resort exceeds all promises and expectations. We chose the "guest of house" and from beginning to end we were treated exactly as welcome guests. The stunningly private island scenery is the backdrop for consistently attentive but almost invisible luxurious service. It is how I picture the summer parties of Edith Wharton to be - endless food and drink, constant attention to needs before you have them, yet in a peaceful remote paradise. I can't imagine anything better.

Room Tip: The private cottages are divine.

We live on a beach in the Bahamas, but I would still come back to Kamalame Cay to relax - the staff, food, and environment combine to give you subtle luxury and a general feeling of wellness .. I would recommend this to anyone looking for some peace.

Room Tip: we stayed in Mahogany which is a 2 bedroom house - magnificent

The hotel management made us feel immediately welcome and at home as we arrived at this incredibly idyllic beach island, the beach front villa was wonderful, beautifully decorated, and felt like home, and the the food was just fantastic. I have to say we have stayed in lots of boutique hotels around the world over the last ten years but this was one of my favorites. We were very sad to leave but we will be back soon, I hope.

If you are looking for a true getaway, this is the place. It is not easy to get there, but once you arrive, iti is definitely worth it! The beach villas are amazing - and the service is so discreet yet so accomodating. We loved the stocked mini kitchen with drinks and snacks each day and enjoyed dinner on the beach and at the main house. We explored the island and beaches on the golf cart and by foot. We enjoyed fishing and kayaking. We would definitely go back!!

Room Tip: We were able to add a third child to the villa by calling and speaking to management - they put 3 tw...
