I really had doubts about writing a review as not to ruin the place with popularity but the host was so gracious that it was the least I can do for the wonderful stay we had. No pictures can capture this place as it is more of an immersion. This was simply the very best beach experience we have ever had. Sand so soft that you can sink up to your ankles walking along the beach. Look back and your foot prints may be the only ones. The rooms were perfect from open air showers (look up to see the stars at night), top notch touches, and even an electric fireplace for that romantic look. The beach is right there so the sounds of the waves at night where better than any sleeping pill. The food was great and the drinks plentiful at the Tiki Bar right on the beach. We named the the tiki bar the Green Flash after the owner and I witnessed the rare event at sunset. We had the luck that a family flew in on their plane and made a grand meal that was shared by everyone with great conversations with others guests, the owners, and very interesting locals. They have a pontoon boat for trips that can give you a day you will always remember. We dove on a wreck and there are so many reefs that it is simply - hey lets try this one! The water was so clear that we watched sea turtles dash about 60 feet down! My wife who does not snorkel loved watching the sea life from the boat. While we were using the scooters to explore the island everyone we came across waved and smiled. What a great time and exactly what we wanted for 5 days. It gave us what no big box resort could ever give, peace. Richard, you have created something special.

Room Tip: Of the four, none are bad but the two closest to the water are just closer.

We sailed to Cat Island and rented a car to explore for one day. We found this place after meeting a couple at conch bar nearby who raved about where they were staying.
When we arrived, it was deserted and that's a good thing! If you want tobe left alone, this is the place. All "toys" are available. No restaurant at this time and you have to cook for yourself but that cuts down on people and gives you more time to have solitude.
If I was looking for beautiful beach, aesthetic accomodations, good management and peace, this is the place in both Cat Island and Long Island, Bahamas. Only $170 per night. Bring the little ones as the beach is shallow for a long wade in.
We are thinking of bringing our boat, anchoring out and having our grandchildren and their parents stay here.
If the manager advises nochildren the week you are honeymooning? This is it!
Best tiki bar view too!

Room Tip: Any room is great but 2 of four are on the water...

We keep coming back. It's wonderful and right on beach with beautiful views. Tiki bar with sunset views. Nicely appointed extremely clean villas. Free wifi internet to guests. Free kayaks and bicycles. Great snorkeling right from the beach. It doesn't get any better than Tailwinds. As close to paradise as you can get.

Room Tip: All rooms are water view, but there are water front rooms.

Tail Winds is a great find. Richard, the owner is very accommondating. The beach is pristine. He has Kayaks for guest use, beach bikes, snorkeling gear, there is ample areas to hike, and a swim in the ocean is right out your beach front cottage. The owner brings in a good deal of local flavor by occassionally offering ideas and locations for a night out on the island. The entire staff is Bahamian. Clean, well built cottages. Convienent to the airport. Great destination for pilots...the owner is a pilot and will pick-up/drop off folks that fly in. The food is great at Tail Winds, but if you want to try another location for a meal...Shannas is just up the beach. This is a great spot. A must for anyone looking for a great get-a-way to a seemingly private island environment.

Room Tip: All of the cottages have easy access to the beach, tiki bar, and a view.

As much as I want to say this is an awful place, so it will remain undiscovered, I have to tell the truth. It is a glorious little piece of heaven on earth. As far as beautiful beach and water is concern, it ranks right up there with Grace beach on Turks and Caicos, and even more peaceful. What do I know, I've only been to cayo guilliamo, punta cana, antigua, BVI, cozumel, maya riviera, Providenciales, varedaro, grand cayman, costa rica, ixtapa, huatulco, los cabos, negril, montego bay, up and down florida...
imagine lazing around on the beach all day long, building sand castle, go for a swim, staring out at the turquoise ocean, read your book, you have the whole beach to your self. You'll be lucky if an occasional neighbor actually pass by. This IS relaxation. Unwind. Bring a good camera, lots of beautiful pictures to be had.
accommodation wise if you are looking for Hilton, then you should go to Hilton...this is more like coming home, 4 well appointed suites surrounding a big whirlpool. The beach is at your door step, you can listen to the waves at night, put you to sleep. Each unit has a small sitting area and a kitchenette. Everything is clean, shower is a roofless affair, imagine showing under the stars...wireless internet is available in the rooms, but signal is pretty poor, you're better off in the restaurant where the router is. Food is an informal thing there. Cook your own, or order something ahead of time, yes, we are on island time.
Snokeling is good, the other couple came back with star fish, sea dollar etc. kayaks are available for free.
Richard our host/Owner is wonderful, he's a retired builder who has found his paradise here in Cat Island, and you are invited to be his guest, he's like santa claus with a wild streak. Christmas with Richard playing poker is definitely one of a kind. Make sure he takes you out in his brand new house boat. Oh yes, Ladies, he's single!
So if you are looking for your 5 star resort, you need to go somewhere else, otherwise if you are looking for your own little piece of paradise, away from it all, this is getting pretty close to it.
Just make sure you bring a lot of OFF!

The bungalows are big, clean, comfortable and you have around 160 channels on TV incl. movie channels. The shower is outside which is a very nice experience. In general the nice thing with this location is that you everything very close by, the restaurant the bungalows, the tiki bar the beach and the ocean, everything within 50 meteres. From the bungalows (or even from your bed) you can see the ocean. And now to the best part about tail winds: Rich and Dave, these two guys are incredible. We stayed there for 4 nights and they were so nice and authentic. You really feel that they have fun with what they are doing there. Dave picked us up from the "airport" and after a drive of about 15 min we arrived at the resort, which is located in the middle of a huge bay with pink fine sand and turqoise water. During our stay Rich put his new boat (quiet big and perfect for sunset cruises or snorkeling) into the water and we made the first trip together along the beaches. Incredible trip, especially these two guys know more or less all locals, so for example one of them just passed some bottle of beer to us when we passed his house. Another experience is the 60 years old open air army jeep. Rich took us to the other side of the island where we found an incredible landscape and animals. Thanks again !!! It was a great stay !!

Room Tip: there are four units, two are directly located at the sea side, the other two are behind them. So th...

NOTE TO TRIPADVISOR STAFF: This hotel is miscategorized as 'specialty lodging'. Based on other resorts of similar size, amenities and location in the area and their category, I would recommend changing tailwinds to a 'Hotel". I found it difficult to find this resort on Tripadvisor without specifically searching for it.
------------------------------------------
My wife and I went to Tailwinds in August 2011 and we stayed for 6 days. The resort is located on the very north side of the island which has best beaches and spots for snorkeling. Tailwinds is right on the beach and has only 4 cottages. Each cottage has a king size bed, great and silent a/c, ceiling fan, safe, hair dryer, iron, free wi-fi internet connection, sofa (in front of a fireplace), kitchenette (toaster, sink, microwave, fridge, coffee machine, plates and silverware), huge wall mounted LCD tv with tons of channels, big bathroom with an outside shower. Awesome! You can take a shower and see red crabs run on the sand right below you. The room is very clean and the furniture is brand new. You have a private porch with table and chairs five steps away from the beach. The resort has a pool with jacuzzi with fresh water that is always cool because they have a private spring. There's a main building that has a reception and table for breakfast, lunch or dinner and a wonderful bar. We enjoyed having margaritas using a new Margaritaville concotion. The bar is always open and you are allowed to use it and prepare any kind of cocktail by yourself. You just need to write down your drinks/sodas. By the way they give you 1 gallon of free filtered and drinkable water in your room. Great! The resort has a tiki bar right on the beach. You can use it just as the main bar. They also have coolers that guests can use for free during the day. The ice machine is in the main bar and it's free! They provide also swimgear, masks, spears, beach towels for guests everything for free. The beach is paradise! About 2 miles of pink sand, warm and turquoise water, great reef with corals and fish (we also saw a sunfish swimming right there). We were the only ones on the beach for 6 days! Tailwinds provides two fresh water showers right on the beach! Mr. David King is the manager and takes care of everything. He is also a very good chef, makes the most unbeliaveble breakfast (eggs, bacon, fresh fruit, sausages, toast, juices...). He provided us a car that we could use for three entire days. BEST PRICE ON THE ISLAND! Be sure to rent your own car on Cat Island so you are able to visit the island itself. There are other beautiful beaches such as Fernandez bay, Coconut bay plantation, but be sure to visit blue holes and the lake upnorth. Most of the roads are unpaved except for Queen's Highway, no worry. Just drive slow and enjoy. Plan to visit the Hermitage on Mt. Alvernia with the most beautiful view of the island. If you wish you can go for dinner (you need to make a reservation) at "Da smoke pot" that is 5 miles far from Tailwinds. Good food and jam session of rake 'n' scrape... Awesome! If you're planning a vacation to Cat Island, be sure to stay in Tailwinds. It's truly Paradise... Even better.
