“Really rude service!!!!!!”
Reviewed 16 August 2014

We were staying at a nearby holiday let and were recommended this restaurant by the owners, the previous guests at our cottage had however commented that we should avoid it due to very poor service but the trip advisor reviews seemed to make this seem an unfortunate 1 off. We arrived on Tuesday evening and made our way into the hotel. We were unsure where to go and there was no one around to ask so we made our way past the bar and through to what looked like a restaurant, as we walked in a waitress was also trying to come through the door and we stopped to let her pass, she made no comment to us so we sat at a table and wondered what to do next. The waitress reappeared and started clearing the table next to us, my partner asked if we were ok sitting at our table (trying to give the indication that we would like some service.) She said yes fine and then disappeared again. A few minutes later she returned with menus, handed them to us and promptly disappeared without saying a word. We looked over the menu and decided on our choices and then we waited, and waited for service. The waitress and another man were busy moving tables out of the room but no attention was paid to us at all. After a while a man approached us and said 'Oh do you want to eat?' he was very abrupt and we were a little taken aback! We replied that we did indeed want to eat (something that was slightly apparent by the menus in front of us!) and he looked very upset by this and then went on to say 'Well we have 2 big tables in the restaurant and I am not sure how long you will have to wait, could we please take all of their orders and then come back to you?' We were still a little stunned by his manner and what we were being told so we said this was fine. My partner then said is it possible to get a drink whilst we wait? The man, again, looked very uncomfortable and said that we would have to go and get our own from the bar. We said ok and he disappeared. We left 2 minutes later, appalled by what had just happened. We, therefore are unable to comment on the food or value! Having read all the reviews we were really looking forward to a lovely meal and instead found ourselves all dressed up, 2 doors down in the Raglan Fryer chip shop, where the service and food were amazing!

Dear Abbie

I would be happy if I could shed some light on the contents of your correspondence but I am having difficulty doing so.
Your main concern would seem to be the two waiting staff on duty at the time. both are mature European graduates and are working for us in the second summer in succession, having proved hard working and eager to please both customers and fellow staff alike. To say that the waiter was really rude would in my opinion show him acting completely out of character.

One of the owners was also front of house all evening, maybe you could have spoken to him at the time.

We operate in a way that other like establishments do who have more than one eating area. The Brasserie, clearly marked offers full restaurant service and operates booking system. the Lounge is used for casual call in dining as well as being a lounge for general sitting and drinking. the waiter correctly informed you that bookings take priority.

He and we regret that we were not able to interpret whether you were intending to eat or not, nor where you wished to do so. this is not a problem we have experience in the past.

“Another excellent lunch stop!”
Reviewed 10 August 2014

This was the third time in an many months we stopped here for a lunch. My husband and youngest daughter tucked into delicious sandwiches and gourmet chips while my older daughter enjoyed a starter size ample helping of Welsh rarebit - the best she had ever eaten! I opted for the muffin with onion marmarade and goats cheese which was simply sensational. The accompanying salad was delicious and once again we enjoyed home-made shortbread with coffees. Previously I had enjoyed the tuna salad - again first class. This is rapidly becoming one of the best places to eat in this area and I look forward to my next visit!

“Wonderfully surprised”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

We sought out the Beaufort for an early evening meal when staying close to Monmouth. Usually we don't go to hotel restaurants for food, preferring pubs or restaurants for our needs (on the basis that hotel food is often a let down). But we scrutinised the menu outside and took a glimpse inside the brasserie and bar area which was warm and very welcoming. Staff were attentive and helpful and the food was a great surprise in both its quality and presentation. We opted to sit informally in the bar area.

Dishes were presented with a dose of glamour and intrigue, portions generous. Prices were healthy for a pubby dinner but not overpriced and very well matched to the quality. A signature gourmet chilli burger was a standout with excellent chips and sides. Highly recommended

“Lovely old coaching inn”
Reviewed 5 August 2014 via mobile

We have stopped here a few times. It is a lovely old coaching inn in the middle of the charming old village of Raglan. There is a choice of bar or bistro plus some outside gardens. Food quality is very good and reasonably priced. Breakfasts are excellent.
