My husband and I visited The Crown for his 40th birthday. We last visited 18 months ago when it was under James Sommerin.
The recent renovations are great. It really was looking tired before.
We both had the tasting menu and wine flight. Each course we had was stunning, however I really did leave feeling hungry at the end. The food was amazing it's a real shame we didn't have enough of it. Each course was no more than three or four mouthfuls (some of the seven courses were less).
We both had the six course tasting menu on our previous visit (under James Sommerin). Whilst the portion sizes are never huge, they were spot on and we left feeling perfectly full.
The staff were very friendly but I was disappointed that they didn't acknowledge that it was my husbands 40th birthday, despite having told them when I booked a few months before. At other top quality restaurants we have been to staff have found ways to note special celebrations, without being tacky.
The wine flight we had was superb. Every wine we had matched the course perfectly.
We were hoping to bring friends here later in the year but the portion sizes really disappointed us so much that we are now looking for an alternative.
Its great to see the place open again. The food and experience are very good but could be even better with a few adjustments.
