“Five repeat visits since last October!”
Reviewed 22 February 2014

We first sampled the reopened Crown for Sunday lunch which impressed us sufficiently to book an overnight stay for my partner's birthday. This was wonderful. The food has been consistently superb during our five visits. I like that the food has great subtle tastes and is not in your face like experienced in some restaurants. You savour the food here… The wine is excellent and very reasonably priced. And front of house provides great service which is not at all intrusive with lots of care and attention to detail. I think the fact that we have now been back four more times since the first visit says it all and that includes Xmas day and Valentines day. I really hope the restaurant is re-awarded a Michelin star; the team really deserve it.

Very friendly welcome by the staff. The lounge area much improved and more relaxing. We had the Tasting Menu in the afternoon. Brilliant, from the Salmon and roast salsify, the Goat cheese fondant, the pan-fried cod with brown shrimps and charred leek, to the 48hr braised beef cheek and kohlrabi and the Poached Yorkshire rhubarb. Absolutely superb! Then came the cheese board; my oh my! What a selection. Feel as if they deserve a review all on their own. Wonderful. Even found a Welsh cheese that was a real challenge to the French Roquefort. One of us even thought it better.
Being an afternoon and two drivers, we went easy with the wine. One white with the starter and a red with the main. Both were excellent choices by the front of house.
It was very special to have the Chief, Chris Harrod, appear at the table at the end to enquire how we had enjoyed the food. Such is the detail to customer care.
Next time will try the evening tasting menu combined with the wine tasting and book a room for the night.
Not the easiest place to get to, but more than worth the trip!

Faultless service and excellent food, dining at the Crown is truly a culinary experience, it's beautiful restaurant in stunning surroundings and a wine list to die for ..... The cheese trolley is worth of a review all of it's own. Try it for your self !

My husband and I visited The Crown for his 40th birthday. We last visited 18 months ago when it was under James Sommerin.

The recent renovations are great. It really was looking tired before.

We both had the tasting menu and wine flight. Each course we had was stunning, however I really did leave feeling hungry at the end. The food was amazing it's a real shame we didn't have enough of it. Each course was no more than three or four mouthfuls (some of the seven courses were less).

We both had the six course tasting menu on our previous visit (under James Sommerin). Whilst the portion sizes are never huge, they were spot on and we left feeling perfectly full.

The staff were very friendly but I was disappointed that they didn't acknowledge that it was my husbands 40th birthday, despite having told them when I booked a few months before. At other top quality restaurants we have been to staff have found ways to note special celebrations, without being tacky.

The wine flight we had was superb. Every wine we had matched the course perfectly.

We were hoping to bring friends here later in the year but the portion sizes really disappointed us so much that we are now looking for an alternative.

Its great to see the place open again. The food and experience are very good but could be even better with a few adjustments.

The Crown is tucked away in a valley between Chepstow and Monmouth but well worth the trip.
It changed hands in October 2013 and since then the Dining Room has been refurbished. It is intimate without feeling isolated. The food is excellent, local and seasonal. The food is well worth a Michelin Star. The staff are friendly, warm and welcoming. There is a seating area for pre-dinner drinks and coffee. On arrival we had tea and the most mouth watering Welsh Cakes. They intend to refurbish the bedrooms but we thought they were excellent. Because of its isolated position this Restaurant with rooms needs publicity to flourish. It is too good to miss.

Room Tip: We had room 4 which looked over the back garden. This was the back of the hotel. The rooms at the fr...

I can not recommend this place highly enough. After eating at a number of these fine dining restaurants, including 2 others in south wales, I would say that this is by far the best, in fact its incomparably superior in terms of service and food. Me and my fiancé had the taster menu, which was so incredible I haven't wanted to eat anything else since as nothing else seems remotely edible anymore. Seven dishes plus canapés, plus cheese, plus petit fours.... I wish I could eat there every night!

I booked the 'gourmet package' in an executive room. The room was lovely and the tasting menu was spectacular. We also had the matched wines which were superb. Steven, the manager, made us so welcome and his food and drink knowledge is outstanding. A wonderful experience from start to finish and we will return soon.
