“Celebrity Chef Clearly Not In Kitchen”
Reviewed 12 June 2012

My wife and I went for lunch on 3 June after receiving an e mail from the hotel advertising lunch on that day with Rowley Leigh one of our favourite London based chefs.

Rowley was indeed on the premises and gave an amusing talk before lunch and signed copies of his latest book as he circulated in the restaurant.

One room he could not have entered was the kitchen which served a very poor lunch. In particular the main course where the pork was seriously overcooked and the roast potatoes rock hard i.e. undercooked.

This a pity because the setting is pleasant and the service was fine..

Had a sunday lunch. The starters were great (goats cheese with beetroot and the haddock risotto.) We both had beef for main. The meat was good however the sides were not of the same quality. The pudding of eton mess was fine but not fantastic. Felt it was a little bland. However overall we enjoyed at the bell. (please ignore rating for the room. As previously mentioned we didn't stay! )

Very mediocre single choice vegetarian meal.
Poor value for money.
Is probably okay for meat/fish eaters, but I wouldn't reccomend it for vegetarians.
Service was very good though and the sorroundings were pleasent.
Bit Isolated though.
Would get a better meal at a fractuon of the cost in a local pub.

A lovely inn with a very modern top end finish. We stayed for 3 nights with our son and dog in the half term. We were made very welcome by Becky and her team...even the dog was well catered for!!! The special touches...hand made biscuits, proper coffee and a cafetiere, fresh milk, bath robes etc make the place and THE most comfortable bed I have slept in at a hotel.

The dinner in the restaurant was lovely. Beautifully presented and very fresh. Even our son said the trio of scallops was "a picture on a plate". We ate at The Walnut Tree on another evening and the Bell food was just as good...and 2 thirds the price. Well done to the team.

Service at breakfast could have been quicker but as we were in no hurry to dash out into the torrential rain it was no problem...my only "complaint" would be that I think that having such a short breakfast slot did not do them any favours in coping with the service and I am not sure that "imposing" a late start breakfast on guests is very fair..especially if one has activities booked or are used to early starts. One cannot adjust the body clock in one night..even in such a relaxing environment. A bit more flexibility on start times for breakfast would be a 5 mark....

I recently stayed for 2 nights with my partner. This is a lovely small, romantic hotel set alongside the river in beautiful countryside. The room was huge with a kingsize bed and very comfortable, apart from the pillows which I prefer a bit firmer, but that is my personal choice. Everything was spotlessly clean. The bathroom was en-suite and very spacious. The lots of little touches made this a stay to remember - the fresh coffee in the room, the quality toiletries, the bathrobes, fresh flowers on the breakfast table to name but a few. The value was excellent, particularly as we got this on a deal.
My only let down was the fact that a sandwich wasn't available during the evening - we had been out for the day and eaten a late lunch so were not up for a big meal which was all that was available in the restaurant - we made do with a packet of crisps but it was the only negative comment about the whole stay. Other than that, the staff were very helpful and the breakfasts were plentiful and more than enough to choose from. This has to be one of my favourite UK hotels - and I am very fussy!
I would very much recommend this to anyone, particularly if looking for a romantic setting.

The Bell is in a beautiful setting & is lovely inside, but our set lunch there was disappointingly average. I'd expected a lot more flair, but the pavlova with summer berries was particularly sub-standard. The meringue did not taste fresh and was so hard I had difficulty cutting into it with my spoon - hard to tell any difference a supermarket version. The waitress didn't explain what the petit fours were either which was surprising in such an expensive venue. Also, would be nice to have more smiles/welcome from the staff...

This is a perfect place to go away to for a week end and is easy to find. Stunning rooms with an amazing restaurant downstairs that serves delicious food at all meal times. Highly recommend their dinners and breakfasts. Very friendly and helpful staff who can provide maps for local walks of varying difficulties for a small fee.
We would throughly recommend to anyone looking for some affordable luxury escape.
