“Impossible not to relax in this beautiful house and location”
Reviewed 18 August 2013 for a stay in August 2013

I stayed at the Boathouse with my six children ranging from 3 to 16 and we had a wonderful holiday. We didn't get all the things done we'd planned as they were just having too much adventure and fun. With the use of the row boat it was like a slice of Swallows and Amazons exploring the lough and watching the seals and heron.
There are plenty of places to visit and do locally for all ages such as the Castle Eskie Wetlands which is a must and the Aquarium in Portaferry a ferry ride across the lough from Strangford we also visited Newtonards which has a petting farm - Ark farm, the Somme Heritage centre, and Scrabo Tower in the country park, further afield there is the Giants Causeway about 2 hrs drive away as is Dublin and there is of course Belfast and the titanic experience.

The house is absolutely lovely the large kitchen and dinning area is perfect With views over the lough and a veranda to sit and enjoy them lovely in the morning, The facilities in the kitchen are fab and the aga is fantastic to cook on although for those who don't want to there are alternate methods available.

The house was a home from home and was obviously a family home, there is so much space you can all have a piece of quietness. There are numerous sofas in the 3 lounge areas all good for curling up on. The piano was also a hit with the children who enjoyed a little tinkle and the book shelves hold a numerous selection of books to read / look at.

The bedrooms are clean and comfortable and the master bedroom is massive with a dressing area and it's own veranda with views to the lough too. The main bathroom is huge and the bath perfect for an indulgent soak.

The courtyard area is nice and secluded and has a super fireplace which was another hit with the children, there a also a BBQ, and plenty of seats to choose from. The field accessible from the courtyard is also a great area to play in and leads out to the pathway which goes around the island.

Daft Eddies restaurant and the Island Cafe are on the island and we found the staff to be incredibly friendly and the food good too.

The owners live next door and there is part of the house sectioned off for their use but you would not know it was being used and it certainly isn't intrusive in any way.

The owners could not be more accommodating and happy to help and were completely charming.

We had a wonderful time in wonderful surroundings and all the children has asked to go back, which I really hope we manage to do.

“I would have stayed all summer if I had the time!”
Reviewed 15 August 2013 for a stay in July 2013

Staying at the Boathouse on Sketrick Island was truly a beautiful experience for my family. We stayed for a week and wished it could have been a month - or more. The house is spacious and even though we had two families staying (total of 4 adults and 4 children) there was plenty of room to find solitude if desired. We enjoyed using the piano and perusing the library.

The kitchen is the crowning jewel - complete with an Aga stove that felt like something from a fairy tale to us. It was fun to learn to use it (instructions provided) and it is so toasty and pleasant to stand by after being out by the sea or first thing in the morning. The dining table and outdoor enclosed patio are ideal for entertaining. We hosted two dinner parties for local relatives while we stayed and even a group of 20 did not overwhelm the space at hand. A review of the house would not be complete without at least mentioning the master bathroom. It was larger than my childrens' bedrooms at home and contains a vast bathtub which everyone staying tried out at least once.

Charming beyond belief is the actual island. Sketrick is a tiny island in Strangford Lough and has houses along one side and fields in the center. The small paths between the fields let us wander about and take in the beautiful surroundings. We had a lovely meal at Daft Eddies, the island's pub - and incidentally the name you should enter in your GPS if you are trying to find the island. Our favorite menu item was the Seafood Pie - complete with crab claws from the lough surrounding the island, but everything we ordered was good and the staff was very friendly.

Finally, the owners of the house live next door and were so gracious, helpful and friendly to us. Before our arrival, I requested suggestions of activities for our children nearby and was very pleased with the things we tried from the list provided. We also requested use of some children's life vests and a row boat during our stay and had a fun time with those. You will not go wrong staying at this property.
