“Beautiful property and interesting experience”
Reviewed 24 June 2013

My husband and I recently stayed at Chateau Mentone whilst attending a wedding elsewhere. I think we had not understood from the website that it was not a standard hotel, but was more a high end guest-house (or somewhere perhaps where you could hire the whole place for events?). Therefore, we were a bit confused by the concept, but that was entirely our misunderstanding.

The Chateau itself was beautiful and in fantastic grounds. It had some very high-end features, and one gets the impression that they are currently doing lots of upgrades or have been rolling out upgrades. The swimming pool was fantastic, though didn't have great sun when we were there. It was safely fenced off as well, so should be ok for young children playing nearby. There were good spec bikes for cycling in the grounds. The spa looked nice though we did not use it. The winery was superb, and looks very posh indeed, and they kindly let my husband do some free tasting. There was also reasonable wifi, which is very good for such a rural property. There were gites in the grounds, which looked like they had been done in a very attractive eco-style, and outside them was a decent playground for children.

We stayed in the Manon room - the room itself was very pretty, and the bathroom was superb. The downside was a rather creepy china doll (especially creepy as she had a toothy smile....). One of those things that might appeal to many people, but wasn't for me. We also didn't have the best nights' sleep, but that is probably due to my pregnancy and my husband being a bit too tall (6-5) for a bed with a foot end.

Food - breakfast was good and an adequate quantity for me, though my husband said he could have eaten more. We ate there one night, and again it must be remembered that it is not a hotel, so the menu is set. The food however was very good indeed and my husband also loved the Chateau Mentone wine.

Everyone was very friendly and kind and we liked the two cats that were about the place!

So, there were many positives indeed. However, we did feel that it was the kind of place where you imagine hiring the whole venue and staying with friends for an event. When it was just the two of us staying by ourselves, it felt a bit strange. This may be more of a reflection on us, and on our normal holiday style, rather than on the place itself. I'd certainly be delighted to be invited to a wedding, corporate event, party etc hosted at this venue, and think it would be incredible when fully occupied by a group of friends.

We also thought it was very good value for money - especially in what seemed to be quite an expensive area of Provence. All in all, I would recommend but would remind holiday-makers not to assume (as we mistakenly did) that it was a regular hotel.

This is an amazing venue. Fantastic welcome and wonderful environment.
Accommodation modern and very clean. Stayed a week and did not want to leave.
All the guests were thrilled and most stayed several days. Hope to go back some day.
Very highly recommended.

Room Tip: We stayed in the gites (apartments). But cannot see how any of the accommodation would be noisy. I...

Have you seen the movie "A Good Year" (with Russell Crowe)? If not, do so now. Then have a look at Chateau Mentone's website. Its not where the movie was filmed, but let me tell you - its just the same.
From the moment the huge iron gates were opened for us to drive up the tree-lined driveway, we were overwhelmed. You know how you always hope that a place has it all? - this does! And because it is set on such a large estate, there is no sense whatsover of one locale being on top of another - there is lots of space in between. Lots of lawns, trees, vines, olive trees, drives, mountain bikes to cycle around the estate, a heated swimming pool well away from the main house, a tennis court. And at the time of this review I would grade it all brand spanking new. Its a recent renovation executed so well. Marie-Pierre and Cyril have done an outstanding job of lovingly renovating an old chateau sympathetically to the period, creating wonderful grounds and restoring the vineyard to all of its former glory.
We took the "Marie" room for 6 nights and used the Chateau as our base to tour the region - though whenever we closed the big iron gates behind us we felt we were cheating ourselves of just a little bit more of Chateau Mentone. Our room was beautiful - it is every bit as grand as shown on the website. Nice high ceilings, big room, plenty of space - that is a defining feature of all things at Chateau Mentone. Indeed, all photos are a proper depiction of the place. We slept so well too - the bed itself was incredibly comfortable and if you like to hear nothing other than the sound of nature (in this case a few frogs) and stare out of your window at night across the vines and up to bright bold stars like you have never seen before - then this place is for you. Its made for romantic getaways - apologies to parents, but this place is not for the kiddies. Its an adult refuge from all the rush of the city and home. You won't be disappointed if you go in search of that.
Cyril explained to us that he used to once be a pastry chef - and his culinary skills come out in his meals. We were lucky enough to have two dinners at Chateau Mentone - its truly personal family experience where Marie-Pierre and Cyril really did make us feel quite welcome at their table.
I nearly forgot! There is also a spa - so we enjoyed ourselves in the hammam (plenty of steam!) and the jacuzzi - there are also some sun lounges outside nearby and overlooking the vineyard and near a fountain fed by a natural spring. You cannot help but relax at this place. There is an exercise machine and weights machine but I cannot imagine ever being sufficiently motivated in such surroundings to exert any real energy. This is a place where you slow down.
There is no stuffiness either. Cyril, Marie-Pierre, Bernadette and the others - they are all so friendly and helpful. And I must give a special mention to Pizza and Mini-Moi - the resident tabbie cats that love a scratch under the chin. Pizza can also sometimes be found sleeping off the day on one of the sofas in the lounge.
Lorgues is a pretty village nearby - go to the Tuesday market; its excellent for the region. They also have some very good places to eat in town too. An of course, there is the obligatory sipping of a rose' or pastis on the provencal footpath as the local world saunters by. Don't forget that the shops shut between 12 and 2pm.
We loved the region and we loved Chateau Mentone. We would go back in a heartbeat! Get yourselves a DVD of "A Good Year", open a bottle of wine, take a virtual tour of the wonderful south of france and then book some time at Chateau Mentone. You will not be disappointed.

we have spent three nights in this Chateau and once crossed the gate and exceeded the tree-lined avenue of secular planes seemed truly of being entrances in a dream. The structure is encircled by vineyards (the owners produces also optimal wines of the Cote de Provence aoc) and dipped in the quiet of the countryside . The rooms are spacious and furnished with taste. The owners always available and very kind. The ideal place to pass some days of relax alternating itself between the swimming pool, spa and naturally the wine cellar. Our best place to stay in Provence
