Popped in twice for a drink. Spoke with new managers, &owner. Found them to be very friendly&forthcoming. They mentioned they've only been there two weeks, but place was fairly busy with coach parties&what appeared to be locals&tourists.
Third time we visited, was for a meal, certainly above the two star hotel rating. Attentive service, &food good home fayre.
Would appear management&owners going in right direction, re past comments... Wish them all the best! :)

The restaurant staff were friendly enough but the restaurant itself leaves a lot to be desired. So tired and dated. Doesn't entice you back a second time.

Standard pub food nicely cooked but the place is tired-looking though clean and needs investment. Hard to see how anyone could make a profit - remote location, weather dependent and seasonal variations in population.

A friendly welcome and good service. Customers seemed mostly locals, many of them English ex-pats.

Did not stay in hotel so can't comment on the rooms. There is an art gallery cum showroom in part of the hotel.

Service was slow, attitude indifferent and prices ridiculously high. I would go somewhere else, it wouldn't be difficult to find something better

We stayed in Salen at Easter 2013 and decided to go to the loch shiel house restaurant for a meal. We were surprised when there wasn't anyone else there as it was Easter .There was one person at the bar , we ordered fish & chips and didn't really look at the prices as we have eaten here in previous years and it was always reasonable before. However how shocked we were when the bill arrived £60 for 4 Fish & Chips !! It wasn't that nice either , we can only presume that the prices have been put up to an extortionate price to put people off ordering as they didn't have any other staff than the barman.
Needless to say we won't ever be going again, which is a shame as it used to be ok.We have seen the hotel for sale so maybe that is why the service and prices were as they were.
