“A magical stay in the Highlands”
Reviewed 29 October 2013

We went with Great Rail Journeys in October to stay for four nights at Glenborrow Castle. Yes it was a long journey to get there but well worth it. The hosts and staff were extremely friendly, the food was out of this world and the accommodation excellent if you were lucky in the pick of the draw. Our large, four-poster bedded room was in the smaller building (as in the photo) but we still had good views of the wonderful water, forest and hill scenery. Unfortunately, one couple drew the short straw for the hip bath (!) and had to share a shower. Otherwise everyone had an old Victorian roll top bath with a shower attachment. The public rooms were large and comfortable and everywhere was warm! Afternoon tea was a real treat with sumptuous cakes (on one afternoon) and at dinner there was a good choice always. Breakfast was buffet and included porridge and the full cooked works. We were so lucky with the weather as it only rained a little a couple of evenings. Generally there was no phone reception here but you can just get Wi-Fi in the middle of the lounge! And no TV of course. We would love to go again.

Room Tip: I believe you can phone ahead to try and get one of the better rooms in the main building which has...

Visited with Great Rail. The concept is that of a house party and it is a unique idea, very well executed. It IS a castle but a comfortable and welcoming one. The food is sublime and the staff are a delight and service was always with a smile.
Our room, Scott, on the 3rd floor did not have views but was charming - it was like entering the world of Jane Austen (my husband did not understand this of course). We entered the room via a dressing area, a good sized bathroom with separate rainfall shower to the right and the bedroom with large brass bed was straight ahead. The 'suite' was decorated in apple green and green and white striped wallpaper.
The public rooms and furnishings are slightly shabby but very comfortable with a variety of views.
The castle was pleasantly warm (tho' we were fortunate enough to have mild weather - and not a midge in sight).
It is VERY remote - 1.5 hour coach journey from Fort William. The location has wonderful views of
Loch Sunart and fabulous sunsets.
We were fortunate in that many in our group were friendly, interesting people - it is meant to be
sociable and so we found it. We loved it.

Room Tip: Greater chance of a room with a view on the 3rd and 4th floors

A four night stay here organised by Great Rail Journeys saw us put in the room entitled 'MacDuff' on the lower level. No telly or tea making facilities but this wasn't an issue as the castle and especially the warm welcome from the hosts David and Lynne made sure that our stay was well received.
The room had a bed with a canopy, dressing table, chair, bath (with hand-held shower) and wc. Ample hanging space for clothes.
David was the Michelin-starred chef and the meals were both sumptuous and filling. The afternoon tea on the day where there were no tours was brilliant with home made cakes (thanks Lynne!) and a selection of light bites.
Our view from the room wasn't brilliant but you only had to go out of the gate to see the wonderful scenery across Loch Sunart. People on the higher rooms at the front had much better views.
Take the opportunity to go on the Estate tour by Landrover which takes you along the peninsula to the lighthouse. We saw Golden Eagles and rutting stags with their harems and young. Scenery along this road is spectacular.
On the final evening all the staff came into the dining room to thank us for our custom which we thought was a nice touch. The morning we left they all lined up to say goodbye and we got the distinct impression that this act was genuine.
Would we go back again? Definitely but I wish we could go as individuals as the castle is only geared to organised groups and wedding/functions.

Room Tip: Pick a room at the front if you can. The views are so much better.

The wonderful welcome we received from David, Lynne and all the staff set the scene for a memorable four night visit. The castle has spectacular views over the Loch and the grounds of the estate gave ample opportunity to walk. The Macmillan Suite was very comfortable with seating area, dressing room with walk in shower, bathroom with roll top bath and a huge four poster bed.
We were able to relax in our room or join our fellow guests in one of the two spacious sitting rooms, one of which provided constant tea and coffee. The rooms do not have TV's or coffee making facilities but we certainly didn't miss them.

This trip organised by Great Rail Journeys was very special and excellent value for money. We left there determined to return.

Room Tip: If possible pay a little extra for the Macmillan Suite, wonderful views from the many windows and an...

We stayed in Glenborrodale on our honeymoon in 1977 and visited the castle for a meal. We always promised ourselves a revisit and when great rail journeys included a four night stay we had to do it.
Every aspect of this stay was excellent, the castle the staff, the guide and the scenery. Each guest was made to feel welcome and special nothing was too much trouble, if you are thinking about it, just do it, you will not be disappointed!..Brilliant, thank you to all the staff and great rail journeys!

Room Tip: Rooms are all excellent but some have four posters etc if you want abit more luxury.

I had a surprise trip via Great Railway Journeys as someone cancelled at the last minute.
The castle is a wonderfully gothic 19th century mansion, luckily it does not suffer from the
excess of tartan which other hotels seem to go in for in the Highlands! The Baird Suite is
82 steps up from the ground floor and no views,. Our neighbours in the MacMillan suite,on the other hand, had views which few other buildings can offer. The food was of a VERY high standard,
breakfast offered unlimited choices and evening meals were a culinary delight.Excellent excursions were offered by comfortable coach. There is no TV ,or even mobile phone reception,in the hotel but I had a small radio, with earphone, for the 8am news! David, host and chef, together with is wife and friendly staff made it a memorable week.

Room Tip: Avoid the BAIRD SUITE! Elderly visitors should be aware there is no lift. Breakast starts at 8am o...

Others have written glowing reports concerning the Great Rail Journey holiday to Glenborrodale Castle and in almost every aspect I fully agree with them. The staff, food, location and GRJ assistance were very good indeed.

Where others discuss the quality of their room, sadly the room that we occupied (Baird) had 'no inspiring view' (Great Rail brochure) but faced woodland at the back of the castle. While many will comment that the room is only somewhere to sleep, it does, however, make up an integral part of the holiday and the value of our room in comparison to the three others that I was able to see were nowhere near comparible. Baird is at the top of the building (not a problem for us) in the attic and if you would like to view the water from your room then I suggest you try not to be allocated this room.

The lack of view was not the only issue with Baird but because the Manager and all his staff went to every effort to provide an enjoyable stay I will not go into further details here.

Room Tip: See review.
