“Hard to find but worth it”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2013

We were staying at the "Signal Cottage" but really should have been looking for Glencoe Cottages. Just ask directions - don't try to find from signs or a map. Very lovely location and very nice rooms. Person on-site was very helpful and made a lovely breakfast. I am not sure what the other reviewers were writing about - maybe the Signal Cottage is much better than others because it was really nice.

Apart from the good location, there is nothing else good about Glencoe Cottages. The driveway is full of potholes, the boiler is very noisy, making it impossible to sleep, the soundproofing is appauling, you have to clean it yourself or be charged, the bedrooms are small, there was inadequate seating in the living room, the TV didn't have good reception, the kitchen had limited items' breakages to be replaced at inflated rates. The cottage is not good value and the 50% deposit is non refundable.

We booked the cottages 5 yrs ago and decided to return to them again in 2013. 26 of us all on motorbikes were again received very well and all accommodation on site is as before, clean and fully equipped for our weeks stay. The local pub food has improved a great deal since last staying with the medium providing really good variety after riding all day. Full marks again to the whole offering.

I was also on the same recent mountaineering trip where we hired all three cottages and I have to say I was rather disappointed with the standard of the cottages.
things I hugely didnt like:
1. the cramped living conditions - almost no space to unpack; possibly if the rooms are used for children it might be ok but for adults its all a bit tiny.
2. the lovely framed print of breakages costs
3. the even more hospitable charge for cleaning at the end of our stay. I'm certainly not averse to stripping beds and emptying bins & recycling but to have an A4 printed sheet detailing precisely what was expected (ie to prep the place for the following occupants to move in) or pay £45 I found rather insulting.
4. the standard of the equipment in the kitchen was rather tired, for example our kettle poured an equal amount of water from its spout as it did from its base.
however, dont be put off - here are some things I absolutely loved....
- the proximity of the Clachaig Inn - only 10 minutes walk away is a very special treat after a long day in the hills
- we also had stupendously amazing weather so being right in the heart of Glencoe was a true bonus for getting out and about with easy access to many of the routes we planned.
Possibly I've been spoilt by the standard of accomodation on our previous trips but as they are all in approximately the same price range I did feel this spot didnt live up to expectations.

My mountaineering club hired all 3 cottages for a week at the end of February 2013. In all 21 of us occupied the 3 single-storey cottages. The accommodation is reasonably well equipped and there is an additional building in the complex which houses a laundry, drying room (an excellent facility) and additional bathroom. This building also has some additional accommodation, possibly a room containing a bunk bed. We were warned not to use this room as it is charged for. If it had been made clearer at the time of booking then I think we might have had a few extra people along on the trip, so if you are booking for a large group do enquire about the "family room". The bungalows are all identical but accommodate 6, 7 and 8 people. The 6-person cottage is probably the optimum with 3 x twin rooms. The other two bungalows cater for the extra people by using bunk beds in one of the rooms. I think children are the intended occupants for these rooms as they felt a little cramped with the extra bodies. The storage capacity in the 3 and 4 person rooms is not great, though soft holdalls can be slid under the beds.

Plus points:
1. Location, location, location.
2. Reasonably well equipped kitchen and living areas.
3 The drying room.

Slightly negative points:
1. There is a slightly draconian policy of charging for minor breakages, such as drinking glasses. We didn't actually break anything but the charges did seem quite excessive, so be careful.
2. There is an extra charge for heating and hot water. I didn't notice this originally when I booked, but it is now very clear on the website. This charge didn't amount to a much, around £25 per bungalow for the week and the weather was actually quite cold for most of the week.
3. I'm well used to leaving self catering accommodation in a reasonable state of clealiness but you are given the impression that the place should virtually be clean enough for the next occupants to just walk in after you have left. Your options are clean it or pay an extra £45 to have it cleaned! We did the cleaning ourselves.

Room Tip: The rooms adjacent to the heating system cupboard are quite noisy , the pump runs constantly, and ve...

A group of us have stayed here 5 years running now, and will most likely return next year.

The cottages are cosy, clean and comfortable. The bonus is the short walk along to the Clachaig pub. The drying room is excellent to get those wet jackets and boots dry for another day on the hill.

One very slight complaint is the cottages are beginning to look a tad tired.

Room Tip: The West cottage holds 8, South 7 and East 6.

We first visited Glencoe Cottages in 2002 for a New Year celebration with family from Australia so when, as a group of friends, we were looking for a suitable location for New Year 2012 Torren immediately sprung to mind.

The setting is spectacular and the scenery cannot be topped in the UK I don't think, our children were very excited to drive through the Skyfall set!

The cottages are well equipped to hire singularly but as a group of 20 the set up really comes into its own. The owners are on site, but not interfering, far from it. Victoria couldn't have been more helpful. She opened up the spare bathroom for us to alleviate the pressure of having so many teenage "preeners" in our party.

The cottages are warm & cosy and very clean. A 15 minute walk has you at the famous Clachaig Inn but bring your slow cooker & your stock of ale and put your feet up and unwind at Torren. This is the perfect away from it all location.

Walks a plenty without leaving Sutherland property and a deer fence & cattle grid means your four legged friend can run free without fear of you losing him from the front door.

A trip to the Nevis Range meant sledging for the kids (and adults!) and I believe facilities are equally good at Glencoe Range.

All in all a fantastic week in a stunning setting. Highly recommended.
