Alladale Wilderness Reserve
Reviewed 21 November 2011

We spent 3 nights at Alladale and as soon as we left we wanted to book up another trip. Everything about it was exceptional. It was incredible to be in a place that has 23,000 acres, that is all for you - we didn't see any other guests. The set up is perfect, they provide food for breakfast and lunch then cook and deliver your dinner - which is delicious. So you get complete privacy but you are still looked after. We stayed in Eagles which had incredible views, was in the middle of the estate yet was still designed for comfort and luxury. The days were spent with John who showed us the wildlife, took us on long walks and lead us pony trekking on the most trustworthy gentle horses. And John was patient and knowledgable and so nice to spend time with. You think that going to a beach and lying in the sun is relaxing and good for winding down, but literally nothing compared to this. You feel healthy, relaxed and calm.

Room Tip: Eagles for small groups of friends or couples. Lodge for a big group

We cannot recommend Alladale too highly. The setting is absolutely stunning, the accommodation, all you could wish for, and the Alladale team were, without exception, excellent.
Accompanied by our twelve year old son, we were kept busy morning and afternoon, with a range of personally guided activities. These included a 4x4 tour of the estate (during which we were lucky enough to see two golden eagles), a great hike (including observing leaping salmon) and our first experience of pony trekking, fly fishing and clay pigeon shooting. We also headed off on independently on mountain bikes, following a recommended route.
At the end of each day, it was lovely to return to our cottage (Ghillie's Rest) for a deliciously prepared two course meal, which simply needed to be heated in the oven.
A wonderful holiday; we will most certainly return!

We have just returned from the most amazing week in the Highlands and Lake District but Alladale was definitely the highlight. We stayed in Eagles Crag, one of the beautiful Bothies (check out the views on the website, they are true to life). The quality of the accomodation is superb and everything is thought of. The team were so friendly, helpful and patient and they were on hand as soon as we needed anything (which in my case unfortunately included a Doctor!). The food was amazing and the beds were so comfortable that we didn't miss our own. If you want to get away from it all, take in some really clean air, get some exercise but not scrimp on the accomodation then this is for you. You are staying in the middle of nowhere so be prepared to drive, do without your mobile (radios and landlines are available and there is wifi), do without light pollution - what an amazing sky - and be prepared as it isn't a quick nip to the shops!

Activities are numerous and in the few days that we were there we packed in Clay shooting, fishing, 4x4 safari and a lot of exercise. My little boy (2 yrs) loved seeing the deer, moose (!) and of course the highland cows and highland ponies and the staff had provided a fantastic chest of toys and games to keep him occupied.

All in all a great trip and couldn't fault it.

We paid in advance for two nights at Alladale Wilderness Lodge in Scotland on Jetsetter.com. We were due to arrive on November 29th. We had elected to rent a car and drive to the lodge. Upon arrival at Inverness Airport, we attempted to call the lodge as we had been directed by its concierge to inform them that we were on our way. For approximately one hour, there was no answer at all. In the meantime, we had picked up our car and were making our way north on the drive. Conditions on the road were icey and dangerous due to the weather in Scotland. About an hour in, we finally got a hold of the lodge owner. He informed us that Alladale was snowed in but we should still continue our drive there as the "roads would be fine." About two hours later, we abandoned efforts to get there as the roads were impassable. We luckily found a hotel in a small village and checked in there. When we called Alladale to inform them that we couldn't get there, the owner replied that "it was just as well as they'd likely be snowed in there for about two weeks." Needless to say, we were livid. If he had told us on arrival in Inverness or even earlier when the weather started turning that we should not make the trip, we could have avoided the cost of the rental car, the cost of getting the rental car towed from where we had to abandon it in the snow back to Inverness, two extra nights in hotels, a nine hour train journey attempting to get back to civilization in Glasgow and ultimately, two days of complete and utter stress. We're grateful we had the good sense to ignore the owner's suggestion that we drive on to Alladale as we probably would not be back in the states yet and would still be snowed in at the lodge. The owner of Alladale went on to lie about this to Jetsetter, claiming that he had offered to pick us up wherever we were and drive us there, and refusing to return our money. It is the most dishonest behavior I've ever witnessed in all of my travels. We lost a great deal of money and had to spend a great deal more seeking alternative accommodation.

I remain really disheartened by the whole experience and would never recommend this establishment or Jetsetter to anyone.
