“late lunch stop”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 May 2013

How refreshing to find somewhere that doesn't stop serving 'main meals' at 2pm. It was a day off heavy rain and didn't spend time as planned in Dumfries. Stopped for a late lunch as food IS served ALL DAY from an extensive menu. Felt welcoming and cosy on such a terrential day, service ,food and portion size were all excellent and I will ceratinly be back soon.

We arrived fairly late in the evening when the meals were almost finished . Despite this the service was warm and pleasant. The food was fast, well cooked, nicely presented and portions were enormous!
The menu is very varied with a large choice of dishes
Will definitely go back!

Room Tip: Stop here. The food is nice!

I have been a number of times with family and friends. The food is excellent and would highly recommend it. We recently had a family get together for my grandpas birthday, there is plenty of room available for a large party.

We stayed locally for a few days before our wedding at Gretna on 12.12.12 in which we managed to make the national newspapers!! The day before we decided to look for somehwere to eat after getting married and found this place. The staff were magnificent, the place was friendly, homely and warm. We booked for 16 people (12 adults and 4 children). The Wife and i had the starter for 2, wow, nice and very filling, i had St Andrews main and the Mrs had Gammon, the rest of the party had beef and ale pies, steaks and the childrens meals were great too. The meals came with plenty of side dishes of veggies, etc. I would strongly recommend Galloway Arms, the price in my opinion compliments the quality and quantity of service, experience and food we recieved. oh, and we had a bottle of wine complimentary!

If you want a three course meal in 55 minutes this is the place to go! Got the distinct feeling they wanted you out as quickly as possible. My starter was fine, but small portion. Main course - disaster for all in the party. 'Venison'" - we think it was pork, meat was too pale and far too bland. Turkey was off a roll, and cheap quality. Sprouts were like bullets. Roast potatoes - when plates arrived, we thoht they were boiled potatoes as they were so pale, but not even boiled, they were rock hard. Daughter had tears in her eyes, meal was a disaster. Puddings - Christmas pudding had little or no fruit in it. I'd never had a cheesecake with jelly on the top - different!! Asked for champagne on arrival, Bucks Fizz turned up. This is just pub grub at its absolute worst! Waste of money. In fact we all agreed it was the worst Christmas dinner any of us had ever had, and we would not recommend this place at all. Drive on by!!!

We stopped at this hotel for our tea the other night on our way home from visiting relatives. We have stopped before several of food not as good. We took turkey with all the trimmings or so it said on the menu. When the meal came it was one small slice of turkey with two slices of stuffing served on a bed of mashed potatoe , plus two roast potatoes and one pig in blanket and a few lettuce leaves for decore on the side of our plate. NO vegetables on the side .The meal was only look warm . As the other review says someone came and asked if the meal was alright but we had barely started our meal. This meal was £ 10.95 each . I found it very disappointing . I think they should display on there menu. Trimminngs with a little Turkey .

we arrived in late one evening and thought we would be limited to what we could eat, but we were astonished to find we could have anything off the very extensive menu.
We started with a medley of local smoked game, followed by fresh lobster and finally rounded off with homemade cheesecake, served on beautifully decorated plates, to start with we thought it was the pattern on the plate, but were delighted to discover it was edible.
I would have loved to have taken the chef home to cook for me on a full time basis ...... but alas he said he was very happy where he was........
Keep up the good work, we will be back and recommend you to all our family & friends.
