My husband and I went to the Kathmandu Gurkha Restaurant II in Ripley, Derbyshire for my birthday meal. Neither of us had ever been to a Nepalese restaurant before so it was to be a new experience. Although it was a Sunday night and we thought it would be quiet, my husband made a reservation. It was a good thing he did as it was packed.
We chose appetisers and a main course and had an Asian beer. The appetisers (poppadoms and a variety of dips) were freshly made and tasty. While we waited for our main courses, the manager said that my husband's meal would take a while as it took longer to cook than some dishes and he then brought us a plate of chicken tikka in batter to tide us over until the main courses came. That was delicious. Our main courses were amazing and we possibly ordered too much rice but managed as much as we could. We then ordered coffee and was surprised by a really sweet birthday dessert and the staff and patrons singing "Happy Birthday"!
The restaurant is quite small and simply decorated and has a friendly atmosphere and smart table dressings. The staff are very friendly and welcoming and most importantly, the menu is varied and quite expansive. There are so many familiar Asian dishes and lots of unfamiliar ones to test the taste buds. We will definitely be returning to try some more of those aromatic meals! Oh...and they also have a Take Away service for those not wanting to eat in.
