Very interesting place, quite a lot to see although its a look rather than climb on etc. The Swanwick junction site is massive with a huge amount to walk round and see. The trackbed needs a really good strim and weedkill which would help enormously and to be honest some of the signalling infrastructure definitely needs some money spending on it.

However MRC if you are reading this you REALLY need baby changing facilities.

Came for Firework display here.
Well organised and very good display.
Have to catch the steam train from Ripley into Butterly which can work out quite expensive to be honest but we enjoyed it nevertheless. Fireworks were to music and lasted around 10 - 15 minutes.

It was the first time for us. We had a little boy of 3 years. The whole day was brilliant. We thought we would be there just a couple of hours if that. Wrong, there is so much to do and see as well as ride on the trains. The staff are all fantastic and great with kids. There are play areas, a beach, climbing frames and lots of things for the children to do. The museum is really interesting and for the children. We had a lot of wows from ours. We went in the signal box and again the kids love it. The place we spent 3-4 hours in was inside the building where you can make a train. The two ladies in there were brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble and they had loads of patience with the children. There were lots of toys for them and if they do not want to sit making a train, the parents can whilst they play. We did and it was so much fun and relaxing. They do a packed lunch at the start for £5 for children with a bucket and spade. However, unless you want the food there are things like that on the beach to play with. There are places to eat and drink. Overall it was a fantastic day and we recommend it. Thank you to all the staff for being so great.

An odd contrast that is probably down to a lack of volunteers in that the work done to re-create this railway has been enormous and the excellent free guide shows an exceptional number of places to see and things to do, however the infrastructure seems run down and the station at Hammersmith was a paradigm of neglect, as was the seemingly vandalised signal box with a signal re-painted to head height only. Their magazine shows that a lot is going on and a consultant is being employed to create a vision that will hopefully ensure a successful future. The driver was very knowledgeable and a kind soul who epitomised what is best about preservationists.

Ok, they have DMUs as well but a great place to visit. Waiting for the train? Visit either the live steam 00 gauge models chugging round the outdoor track or the 00 layout on the indoor track! Loco today was a GWR tank engine. ... Great! Only criticism is car park. I got boxed in!
