“Great find in North London”
Reviewed 3 February 2014

We were visiting friends in North London and a relative in M25 land and searched for a bed for the night in a hotel with good Trip Advisor reviews. This one fitted the bill perfectly.
Not having any familiarity with this part of the previously unexplored universe beyond the northern end of the Piccadilly line, and being quite astonished to find a green environment, it was a pleasure to drive up to this hotel which had so clearly belonged to the Chief Rangers of Enfield Chase when the Dukes of Chandos were the owners.
This is to preface its old world charm, high standards of comfort, and a feeling that everything would be just right. It was. While we tend to avoid reviews of hotels where we have had only the briefest of stays, not even taking time for breakfast, it is clear that West Lodge Park has lovely large rooms of high standard.

Thank you for your kind review of West Lodge Park.

I am glad you found us, and more importantly enjoyed every aspect of your stay.

Come back in the summer when the gardens are at their best, the weather is too miserable at the moment to truly enjoy everything that West Lodge Park has to offer !

We have just celebrated 50 years since the founding of the Beale Arboretum in 1963 by my Grandfather Edward Beale, and are busy planting out many dozens of trees.

With kind regards,

Thank you for your kind review of West Lodge Park.

I am glad we looked after you well and that you found the staff friendly and the hotel a lovely place to be.

We have fantastic offers on our website for weekend dinner bed and breakfast stays at the hotel, and if the drinks prices you mention feel a bit "four star", the prices for the overall stay are most definitely below that charged by any other top quality four star hotel in the area.

Do come again, hopefully when the weather is a bit more settled !

Set in some amazing grounds and with delightful walks, this lovely hotel is a bit of a surprise on the edge of north London. The public areas are comfortable and the service excellent and even on a busy lunchtime the staff were friendly and courteous. Can recommend the afternoon tea ( as well as the accompanying champagne) as it appeared did many others in the restaurant and lounge area.

Thank you for your kind review of West Lodge Park Hotel.

I am glad you enjoyed your visit and were able to enjoy an afternoon tea with champagne, a very civilised way to pass the time !

In better weather you can also enjoy the wonderful 35 acres of grounds around the hotels as well as the great views across open country that help makes Enfield the greenest London borough with more green space than any other borough.

It is nice that West Lodge Park was a surprise for you, it has been owned and run by three generations of the Beale family since 1945, and that continuity is a rare and precious thing in this day and age of chain hotels and restaurants.

Do come again soon, it would be a pleasure to welcome you back to this lovely hotel.

Kind regards,

My girlfriend & I are trying to go away for one weekend every month to get out of the house.
I had bid on some charity auctions at work end of last year & one of the ones I won was an over night stay here.

Not knowing anything about the hotel or area, it was a pleasant surprise to arrive in such lovely grounds & being warmly welcomed by the doorman.
We were early checking in and the room wasn't ready, so on the suggestion of a couple of members of staff, we decided to go to Trent Park. Particularly impressed with the offer of wellington boots from the hotel, but we had our own!

After several miles walking it was nice to get back in the warm and into a very charming room and hot bath, before dinner.

As to dinner, well the food was superb. The selection on the menu was excellent and made the choice very difficult but the quality of the meal was perfect and came away feeling comfortably fed.

And the following morning breakfast was to a similar high standard.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Thank you for your kind review of West Lodge Park Hotel.

I am delighted we were able to look after you so well, and you had a successful weekend away.

As I write in late January, the grounds are pretty sodden from the heavy rainfall we have experienced this winter, but we are busy refurbishing bedroom 4 inside the hotel, and busy laying paths and planting dozens of new trees in the arboretum outside the hotel.

Do come again next time you bid for a charity auction prize, it will be a pleasure to welcome you back to this lovely hotel !

Just returned from Sunday afternoon tea and I had to write this up as it was great. Nice atmosphere, great scones and sarnies and the service was superb, we couldn't fault it. The hotel has nice grounds, and the restaurant was lovely. It's clean, perhaps a little old, but not tired just slightly dated. Would definitely return or recommend.

Thank you for your kind review of West Lodge Park following your afternoon tea at the hotel.

I am so glad the team looked after you well.

The Mary Beale Restaurant and Terrace Bar opened in 2009 and are named after my ancestor Mary Beale who was Britain's first professional woman painter - original artworks by her dot the walls. Perhaps this was what felt dated to you ?

She lived from 1633 to 1699 and is an example to us all as a woman making her way in what was only a man's world in those days.

Do come again soon for tea, or for lunch, dinner or an overnight stay !

The first thing you notice is how efficient the staff are. From the doorman who kindly opened the front door for us, to the excellent barman who remembered our drinks order for the second round, and went out of his way to rearrange the tables and chairs in the bar so all six of us could sit together on a busy Saturday night.
A great start. I don’t usually enjoy the hustle and bustle of Saturday nights, but this was a special occasion, being my Dad’s 70th birthday.
We were invited to our table for dinner at 8.30pm, and were all looking forward to an excellent meal in the Mary Beale Restaurant.
Overall, an enjotable meal, but a few negatives I feel I need to point out, bearing in mind that I wouldn’t if this wasn’t an upmarket venue.
We left the restaurant at 11.30pm after three hours. We all felt that the gaps between courses, and before we received our starters, were too long. Assume this was because it was a Saturday night. But then staffing levels could be increased to meet the demand? Or even an acknowledgement that they were busy, and a timing indication would be better than waiting without knowing when to expect the food. Conversation was starting to dry up.
My brother’s wife’s meal had to be sent back as it was wrong, which meant by the time it was corrected, we had all almost finished our meals. I asked for a rare steak, which was medium. Only when I cut into the middle, I noticed a faint red colour. There were also items that were unavailable to order which should have been pointed out when we were given the menus.
Small points maybe, but in a top-notch venue…….
Took the shine off an otherwise faultless, enjoyable evening.
P.S. Bring back tablecloths!

Thank you for your review of the Mary Beale Restaurant at West Lodge Park.

I am glad you enjoyed most, if not all, aspects of your visit, but am naturally sorry if some things weren't quite right.

Do give us another try sometime, whether for a birthday celebration, or for some other occasion. It would be a pleasure to welcome you back to West Lodge Park again, and once again, I apologise for not getting everything right on this occasion.

Gosh, three reviews of West Lodge Park !

Thank you so much,

I am glad we have continued to deliver on our service to you over all these visits.

I pay great store by consistency in a hotel, and when I go elsewhere, I look for a hotel that consistently looks after its guests, irrespective of who is on days off or holiday.

The mark of a good hotel in my mind is one that manages a consistently good level of service on every day of the week, and at all times of the year, and we get it right most, if not all, of the time.

Do come back soon !

With kind regards,

Andrew Beale
