Nike Lake Resort
Ranked #5 of 13 Hotels in Enugu
Reviewed 14 June 2014

Enugu is not a holiday resort or a business center of any significance so the fact that there is a hotel of some quality is a blessing in itself.
The grounds are pleasant with pool, good tennis courts, 9 hole mache golf course and a small (brown) lake. The hotel is surprisingly big and has conference facilities.
The room gives the immediate impression of being well used and that feeling does not go.
The room has a fridge with one small bottle of water. There is a kettle for with tea and coffee and milk creamer. The electrics are a little suspect with the plugs sparking when connected to the kettle or laptop charger. The desk is mounted to the wall and you can see yourself at work with the mirror in front of you. The aircon is noisy so best to switch off when you go to sleep.
One excellent feature is the light. Lots of it - so many hotels think you like the half light ambiance.
The bed was two single bases with a double mattress on top. A bit of a hammock at times but ok overall.
The bathroom is ok if you are prepared to run the taps a bit to get the brown sludge out of the system. old and threadbare towels.
There are no lifts so if you are on the top floor be prepared for the exercise. The obliging staff will help you with any heavy luggage.
There are quite an array of shops and services - 'gangster' hats and massage took my attention.
The conference room was poor. Pillars prevented the room from having decent seating. Rats visited us during the event.
Food was ok. I have not got sick (touch wood) and I was able to find something I liked. The staff were so charming and willing to please that you could forgive them for any failings of the menu. The dining room has a good view over the pool, grounds and brown lake (no jet skiing though!)
If this was not Enugu in the middle of Nigeria the rating would be worse but the effort that the resort made with what they have makes this the premier hotel to stay in Enugu.

Room Tip: Away from the stairs and one overlooking the lake if possible.

Enugu is not the easiest place to access from outside to begin with---and for a large city, it has very few quality hotels. I was told by my local host that this was the best they had to offer. Well even the best in Nigeria is sometime sorely lacking. The place was decent---established hotel...clean....but the drawbacks begin here. The rate on the website is not the rate they were willing to honor...had to fight for and win that battle....

The internet is really slow...off and on with the electricity, which, by the way, can be off for five minutes or so at least five or more times per day....really annoying if you are working or trying to watch a game. The A/C works...the hot water was lukewarm at best. And I was told (likely an attempt to win a reward) that I was being given the privilege of an upgraded and newly renovated room (would not want to see what is regular).

All told, it is really no worse than the standard Nigerian hotel. I am offended when people group these problems as an "African" problem because they are not endemic in Ghanaian, South African, Kenyan or Zimbabwean hotels I have visited.

The sad reality is that the other options in Enugu might not be much better. I could not find it here. Food, incidentally was not happening (but just my personal taste perhaps)....go to the local restaurants for some bar-b-q fish....

Room Tip: Close to the reception...may help the Wifi.

Stayed for 4 nights in February 2013. The rooms are clean, have a/c, and the shower has hot water. Internet was quite reliable. It is also convenient to exchange USD for naira at the front desk, which our team took advantage of extensively.

We ate at the restaurant every night and the service was quite good. On the last night, we saw a rat in the dining area but we never got sick from the food here. There is also a pool which some guests took advantage of.

Overall, probably the best hotel in Enugu!

Spent a night here while working near Enugu. The rooms are quiet old and water in the bathroom was dusty brown. Food is great, cheerful staff and the hotel is in a very secure area of Enugu.

This is not an impressive hotel by modern western standards but it is definitely the best in Enugu. It is a real hotel with reliable electricity (backup generators quickly kicked in when power was interrupted), reasonably good internet access, working air-conditioning, varied menu at restaurant (including Nigerian and continental selections) and very friendly and helpful staff. I will plan to stay there again when I return to the area.

The facility is large (well over 200 rooms) but was mostly empty when I was there. It could definitely use some updated redecoration and renovations. Ask to check your room before accepting it as some rooms apparently have had leakage problems and stains on ceilings and walls. My room had apparently not been used for awhile because brown water came out of the pipes when I first turned on the water. However, I turned out each of the faucets, hot and cold in sink and tub/shower, and in moments all the brownish water had cleared and I had no further problem. (Even this was a much better experience than I had previously had at the Toscana hotel in Enugu.) Once I cleared the pipes (which took all of a minute or so), everything worked well in my room -- water, hot water, air-conditioning, lights, tv, etc.

There are also several stores (shops) in the hotel selling everything from books and magazines to CDs, souveniers, clothing and more. Some of these are open late.

There is some incredible African artwork in the common areas that is well worth taking the time to inspect.

The staff, ranging from front desk and bellman to restaurant workers and shop keepers were all wonderfully friendly.

This hotel is a little out of the way, 20 minutes or so drive from the center of Enugu. However, it is worth the drive, is probably safer, and has much better facilities (such as swimming pool, tennis courts, attractive grounds, etc.).

If you find yourself needing a place to stay in Enugu, this is the best.

Have stayed a couple of times here now. The hotel needs an upgrade , the rooms are large but the bathrooms and the showers in
particular are dire! Food in the restaurant is good but give the food in the bar a miss. It's quite a bit out from Enugu centre and the roads are not very good - be warned !!

Not much to choose from in Enugu. There are newer hotels such as THEHotel but overall the Nike has lots of space, the rooms are old but clean and light and airy (if small). Nice staff, good breakfast. Quiet aircon.
Just beware large events. It's normally empty, but can fill up 250 rooms, which gets a bit hectic.
