Having booked a non-smoking caravan as we have 18 month old child our caravan was saturated with smoke. Child cot was stained with mould. Eventually given another caravan which was better.whole site seemed tired and had seen better days. well advertised beach was poor and very dissappointing. Overall holiday poor in comparison to other sites we have been to.wont rush back.

Just returned from a three night stay at Southerness.

Arrived to find an over-flowing wheelie bin with bags of rubbish surrounding it.Phoned and was told it would be emptied in the morning. It was finally emptied at lunch time after phoning again.

The caravan was dirty, esp the bathroom. the toilet had not been cleaned and the floor was filthy.Dried on tomato on the kitchen floor - God knows how long that had been there. There was a wristband from swimming in the cutlery drawer.

The pool only holds 25 people and sessions are on a first come first serve basis.

Staff very friendly and helpful esp the maintenance man who came when the kettle fused the power supply.

The path to the beach was strewn with rubbbish.

Stayed at the park on a mid week break just before school holidays in May so it was not that busy fortunately as i do not think the facilities are sufficient enough for the size of the camp.
I will start with the acommodation which was the 3 bedroom Annan. This was very good with all the usual equipment plus central heating and it was tidy. The site itself is set on the Solway Coast and we had a lovely view overlooking the 2 mile stretch of beach. The only problem with the location is the fact it is quite far to travel to the various places of interest in the area with Mabie Farm Park being the nearest around 7 miles away (country roads). The nearest main town is Dumfries which is around 14 miles away so if you need shopping or a bank then you have to travel. The Costcutter shop on site was open 8 till 6 but only stocked the very basics.
The main problem we encountered was the childrens entertainment. As i said the site was not that busy and whether that was the reason but the staff did not seem very motivated. Also the site has childrens characters namely Maxi, Milly and Moultie who provided a show everynight. One of the characters then came back out after the show so the children could have their photos taken with them by the camps photographer. However the compere failed to mention until all the kids were all queing for the photos that it would cost £5 per photo which had to be paid first and that the photos would be ready the following day but there would be no choice of picture. Also they were offering prizes to the kids (mainly aged 3-7 years) however this was basically a raffle and the kids were told if they didn't have a ticket they would not win the prizes so they should all go and get a pound from their parents to buy a ticket and they only had the length of time of a record to buy one. Basically the entertainment all seemed based around making money from the kids which obviously i feel is wrong.
A good park slightly let down by it's location but mainly by it's entertainment programme.

stayed at southerness in a tay caravan for 3 nights over bank holiday weekend.

I arrived quite late on the friday night so had to pick up keys from security at the entertainment venue but was a very friendly security guard who explained exactly where caravan was. When i entered caravan very clean and spacious (compared to superior caravan at haven @ haggerston). double bedroom with ensuite toilet which i wasnt expecting. bed linen is provided but you need to make your own bed linen was very clean too. heating panels in double bedrooms and toilets and had a ceiling panel in the twin bedroom. was impressed with the caravan although my 4 year old wasnt impressed as tv only had 5 channels.

entertainment team was small only 5 on the teamthey tried there best but i think they could be doing with some more entertainers as quite a large park.

mini supermarket onsite stocked with all the essentials is a cost cutter so is reasonably priced.

there is only 1 restaurant onsite which had good quality food but a relatively small menu but again i found this to be reasonably priced similar price to pub food and menu similar also.

there is 3 play parks around the site and an indoor soft play area too which is included in cost of your holiday / pass. There is a small indoor swimming pool too but you need to pre book which time you want to go i did not use the swimming pool as my little boy was happy going to kids clubs and soft play he had rotten cold so didnt want to risk taking him swimming.

kids club was a t 10 every morning and usually ended with one of the characters from treetops grove making an appearance.

i found the park to be really good value for money not overly priced like the haven parks can be, at night the kids can get there faces painted for only £1 which i thought was fab.

never met 1 unhappy member of staff they were all smiling and so friendly.

if anyone has any questions dont hesitate to get in touch.

For our first family holiday, we got one of those cheap The Sun £9.50 holidays and booked a caravan (sorry, holiday home) at the Southerness Holiday Park, ran by Parkdean. This was for 4 nights in the last week in April.

Travelling there was easy for us as we are from the North East so it only took around 3 hours to get there. Once you’re near Dumfries, you go off the beaten track and about half an hour later arrive at the caravan park on the coast. Southerness is a little remote and reminded me of something out of the League of Gentlemen – only for local people, you get the impression. About a dozen houses, a pub and a shop – oh and a lighthouse – is all you’ll find in the village.

In general, the weather was good to us. It rained a bit but nothing stopped us from doing the things we wanted to do. The park itself is in a nice location. We had a walk to the beach on one day and this is only around 10 mins away and very picturesque. There is a “Costcutter” shop onsite which sells most basic supplies – tip: go into Dumfries and find the Tesco Extra (ask at Reception for directions) if you want a little more choice. The park itself is quite large (although I have nothing to compare it to!) and we walked around it on a few occasions to have a look at the other “holiday homes” on offer – some were very nice indeed.

The caravan we stayed in was a “Tay”. Unfortunately, this was in need of some serious updating and not really what we are used to on holiday – I don’t think we’re too fussy but this was going basic, even for us. The caravan itself was a decent size - two bedrooms, a good size bathroom, a good size living area and a kitchen/dining area. It had a TV (only the 5 channels), a gas fire in the living area and wall heaters in the main bedroom and bathroom. The kitchen had a gas oven and hob. As the weather was still a little cold at this time of year, we used the heating a lot. We paid extra to be situated close to the facilities as we were aware it was a large park, but this really wasn’t worth paying.

We had a 6-month old baby with us. Things to do onsite are limited. There is an “entertainment” complex – a small building housing a small amusements & play area for children, a small bar & restaurant and a small swimming pool. We went swimming on one of the wet mornings and found the pool okay for a swim, but quite small and nothing there to keep children entertained in the water. We were told at Reception that you needed to book a session at the pool to ensure it was not oversubscribed – we duly did so, but found we were one of only 3 groups swimming when we got there. We never ventured into the complex after 6pm, but heard it a few nights. We tried the restaurant once and this was expensive and not that great.

On trips out, we went to Mabie Farm Park, which is on the way back to Dumfries and only about 20 mins from the holiday park. This was a nice place and great for young children, see the farm animals and play in the park area. There were some huge open spaces and plenty of benches – we took a picnic and found a nice place to sit. We also went to Glasgow one day which is a distance away – 2 hours drive from the park – but it was a lovely trip up and I couldn’t believe how quiet the motorways were.

Just as a side point, this holiday actually ended up costing us a lot more than the advertised “£9.50” – you pay service charges (for gas & electricity), plus a bed linen charge (if you don’t take your own), plus charges for the entertainment passes to get into the complex, plus extra charges if you want to upgrade or choose your location. So, in reality, you should be looking to pay around £100 for this length of stay. Interestingly, if you look at booking online, it only costs a little more to do it yourself!

It’s a lovely area and if you’re into your caravans, you’ll have a lovely time. We had a really nice break for our first family holiday, but caravanning just isn’t for us!
