My one minor reservation on booking the avowedly pet-friendly Trigony House Hotel was that it might have a whiff of dog about the place, just be a little pooch battered around the edges. How wrong I was! The hotel is immaculately kept and our room, the ground floor garden suite, was faultlessly clean and well maintained. OK, the bathroom suite might be due an overhaul soon not that there was anything the matter with it, just it was looking slightly dated. We loved having our own conservatory and large private garden with a lovely view and I could imagine that those travelling with a dog would think they've booked into a canine Ritz. The bed was very comfortable, the linen high quality. The only complaint was the black bedside lampshades. Hopeless! Function before form, please.

Meals were excellent. The bread was home made and the food very tasty. Homemade parsnip crisps, olives and your drinks carried on a tray from the bar to the dining room - you don't get that at a Premier Inn no matter what Lenny Henry would have you believe! Moreover the dining room was elegant with a wonderful open fire and a very nice atmosphere.

Our stay at Trigony House was a flying visit, en route to Northern Scotland but we enjoyed our short stay so much we hope to be back soon and for longer so that we may explore the Borders.

We were really looking forward to this stay but were instantly disappointed by the initial welcome. We were greeted by a sweaty monosyllabic teenager and a 5 year old running around the place (cute at first we thought but read on).

First impressions of the room can be summed up as visually nice enough but smelt of wet dog. We appreciate the hotel is dog friendly and we have dogs - but no one wants to stay in a room that smells like that. The conservatory was pretty dirty, and the furniture within it was damp and unclean.

So, off to dinner. We were asked if we'd like to take a drink in the lounge before the meal. The lounge again smells of dog and in particular on the furniture (nice). But the best part was that we had the aforementioned 5 year old dumped on us - we presume - to babysit her as she was apparently related to one of the staff. She had said she had come from the kitchen where she had been 'helping' with the meal - which we laughed off.

After the child knocked over one table and almost took out ours, we had no choice but to ask her to go and find her mother and preferably stay with her.

Off to the dining room and after killing the flies buzzing around our table (this is only March remember) we were served some pretty average fayre and some over priced wine - during which not once were asked if the meal was ok. Upon returning to our room, we glanced in to the kitchen to see the 5 year old SITTING ON FOOD PREP WORK-SURFACES. We kid you not.

We then retired to bed and to be fair slept well. Next morning, a revelation! Richard arrived with our breakfast in bed and was helpful and cheerful and a breath of fresh air (which we needed in that room). Food was fine - I then proceeded to have fix the shower before using it. Call me old fashioned but I expect it to be fitted to the wall properly and not to pour water all over the floor when I turn it on.

After which we left. So in summary - it's over priced, it needs a very good clean. The management ( who we notice from previous reviews leave pretty combative responses) need to study the art of good simple service - particularly the importance of first impressions and front of house - and health and safety.

I suspect we'll get a reply along the lines of "why you didn't raise all this at the time", well we did next morning and received only an apology but in any event, we're not there to teach your people how to run your business. We won't be back or recommending.

Room Tip: Don't ask for any of the rooms used for dogs - unless you like the smell of other people's w...

We are all genuinely saddened to hear that this experience of Trigony fell so far below the guests and our expectations. Richard had brought the matter to our attention as it was discussed with him extensively prior to the their departure. We are sorry that such a poor first impression seems to have been made and that this coloured the enjoyment of the rest of the evening and that it took a good nights sleep to restore the gentleman's equilibrium.
I would like to take this opportunity of thanking the guests for their kind comments about our breakfast service and we are glad that Richard was able to help at breakfast.
Everybody that works here is saddened that the hotel and some of its staff were found to be quite so objectionable

and I am at a genuine loss to understand why this should have been so on this occassion.

I have stayed here probably 10 or more times. The food is first class and the breakfast fantastic. The rooms have been improved over the years and the whole experience is very relaxing. However like a well read book it is beginning to get a little tired and dog eared . Such as the public areas, especially carpets, rugs and décor in the corridors. The wooden flooring needs shined up a de-scuffing.
Come on guys, make the place sparkle again! It is a gem and I see a few people have commented on this and I must say I was disappointed when we brought some friends and found that it had lost its appeal. I still think it is very good but sliding towards average.

Room Tip: They are all different and have their own charm.

We went as my husband wanted to go fishing nearby, what a charming hotel! Food was simply amazing! It had such a homely feel to it! The owners were so helpful, even getting up early so the fisher men could get an early start! We most certainly be back, next time with the dogs! Thanks again!

We were given a voucher from our children for xmas and decided to use it up this weekend, we were delighted to discover that this hotel was pet freindly as we have a small dog and enjoy taking him out for long walks. As it turned out we did not take our pooch as our daughter wanted to spend time with him.. However we were touched to see that when we arrived at hotel there was a lovely welcome gift for the dog in the room and that there were ample places for him wander around the garden. The Hotel is set in a very well maintained large garden with ample parking close to door, the staff were very freindly and could not do enough for you.
The food I have to say as a well travelled person doing many cruises was second to none. My husband said its as good as it gets, the portions were just right and choice on menu was varied using local produce and as fresh as could be.
The bedroom was large spacious and very comfortable with a large bathroom with bath and shower.
It was nice to see other guests with their pets in and around the hotel.

Room Tip: We wre in room 9 and even though it was near main staircase we did not hear any coming and going by...

Trigony is undoubtedly truly magnificent in every way. The service is attentive but not intrusive with the ability of making you feel as though your at home, the staff approach you in a professional way but make you feel as though you've met old friends. We stayed with our 6 year old son, I was impressed how everyone made time to have a conversation with him rather than talk to us about him as though he wasn't there. That is how adults in hotels tend to treat children unfortunately. We chose the Garden Suite, a gorgeous room with access to your own enclosed garden. We took our dogs with us so this room was perfect, it had everything you would need and they even left homemade biscuits for us and a tin containing dog bones & doggy bags for our dogs. We ate in the bar so we could have the dogs with us and chose to eat from the a la carte menu, we were not disappointed, it was fabulous. The overall package that this hotel offers is not to be missed. I cannot it recommend enough, we will revisit as soon as we can.

Well the hotel is magnificent in all aspects. I was at this hotel as a 50th Birthday present from my husband who new I would not like to go without my gorgeous dog Cody. We drove up to the hotel after a very stormy 1 hours drive from Hamilton and it was picturesque. We were greeted by a very lovely young man and shown to our room which was the garden suite on the bottom floor, this suite has it's own conservatory and private garden which had a great view. The suite is huge and lots of space for Cody to play with his toys (we had 6 adults and 3 dogs in there at one point and there was still lots of room for them to play.
The food is brilliant, I tried the kidneys in mustard sauce, the ribeye steak with porcini, and peppercorn sauce, the Ginnea fowl with garlic and lemon also the duck was brilliant. The Raspberry crème brulle was good apart from the burnt candy on top it was not burnt enough even though I sent it back once and was still not burnt enough( Try using brown sugar and burn it more as the topping needs to crack when spoon inserted). Breakfast as large as you would like with plenty choice.
The hotel staff have thought of everything for your dog from towels to dry them to doggy shampoo, poo bags, bowl they even give you hot soapy water and sponges to wash the dog and clean water to rinse them. There was even dog treats in the room and a welcome note from the hotels resident pets.
The staff could not do enough for you always willing to help and give advise on walks etc.
It was great to see lots of dogs in the one place and getting along with each other.
The walks are great but just remember you are in the countryside, and some places you need to keep dog on a lead so they do not go into the fields with the sheep or cattle.
It was nice to meet other dog owners as well especially Katy and Neil who brought along little Sebastian who Cody loved right from the start.
Dogs are welcome in all places of the hotel except the restaurant but you can also eat in the bar with your dog if you wish. No need to get dressed up if you don't want to as it is very laid back, I was glad I never got dressed up as I spent a lot of my time lying on the floor playing with all the other dogs.
You will not find a more dog friendly hotel anywhere.
We will return to this hotel over and over and will recommend it to everyone we know.

Room Tip: Best view rooms are on first floor at the front so ask for 4,6 or 8. If you want lots of room and p...
