We attended at the Carnbooth House Hotel for a saturday night dinner, having previously been in for a drink we thought that the menu, although not cheap, looked enticing.
Unfortunately the saturday night in question was when they had a wedding party of 200 so we were left with drinks and menus for so long that we had to ask if we were meant to go through to the dining room ourselves. When they took the order we asked what a seafood creel was, the server went away to ask the chef and returned stating that it was a mixture of prawns, mussels, scallops and salmon wih crushed potatoes. My wife ordered this and I ordered the lamb shank. For starters my wife ordered the chicken parfait and I ordered the goats cheese fritter.
Eventually on reaching the dining room we found that the chicken parfait was shop bought brussels pate and not as we had been lead to believe home-made chicken parfait, the goats cheese fritter was okay.
The main course was dismal the seafood creel was a very large salmon fillet with ONE prawn , 7 mussels and 2 scallops, along with cruhsed new potatoes, I say crushed some of them were still whole and hard. As my wife had been informed that it was a creel of seafood and not just a salmon fillet with a couple of bits of seafood she was understandably not impressed. The lamb although okay was not to the standard of the other local restaurants and the vegetables were very like the packets that can be bought from Tesco.
My wife did complain to the restaurant manager as she had left so much of her main course to be told that the chef must have been feeling generous as he didn't usually give that much salmon!! No apology or form of understanding.
We finished with coffee, which I'm sure you can't do much wrong with and faced a large bill at the end. We enjoy fine dining and have no problems paying for good food. This was not good food in fact it wasn't even decent food. The taxi driver taking us home to Clarkston asked if we had enjoyed the dinner, we were honest and told him what it was like, he then informed us that we were not the first that he had heard say that, we're sure we won't be the last.
As we live locally and had told friends and neighbours we were trying the hotel out for dinner we have been asked for our opinion to which we have had to say we don't recommend it.
