“Sompting Parish Church”
Reviewed 28 June 2012

I love old churches like this. The only Rhenish Helm spire in England. The church was originally built by the Anglo-Saxons and changed and added on to throughout the ages. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book with connection to the Templars. The location of the church is just off a main road so no problem getting lost!

“1000 year old Unique Saxon Church on flanks of South Downs”
Reviewed 1 February 2011

The existing Saxon Church of St Mary's, Sompting was probably established c 960 A.D, and features the only surviving Rhenish Helm spire in the UK. The Church is open daily from dawn to dusk, and is regularly used for Christian services throughout the year. Entry is free of charge, and visitors are welcome to enjoy the peace and tranquillity offered by over 1000 years of prayer and praise. In 1154 A.D the church was taken on by the Order of the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem; otherwise known as the Knights Templar. Subsequently, the church was handed to the Knights of St John ( The Hospitallers) who retain Patronage to this day.
