“I wanted to fall in love ....”
Reviewed 22 April 2013

Checking in to the Coral Sands it's obvious that the property was fabulous its heyday. And I was hoping that it hadn't lost that charm ... I really wanted to fall in love with the hotel. Unfortunately, the hotel fell short, so if you stay, don't expect anything more than a basic stay. Tired rooms with mediocre service. When we checked in we asked for a luggage rack; never received. Our room had not been properly cleaned with visible piles of sand on on a chair; it took 3 days for someone to clean. Towels & bathrobes were not replaced after the room was cleaned. Our dirty towels were left on the floor by housekeeping. Only two pillow on a king size bed. Dust bunnies in the hall that were these for days. The list goes on. The island is a fabulous place. The locals are wonderful. And the lack of cars is refreshing (people travel by golf cart - or walking). But this property, well it just needs a facelift.

Room Tip: Definitely stay in the newer building - if possible

We have stayed at Coral Sands and loved it!!! It is a lovely hotel on a beautiful island. To insure that it stays that way I hope that the person, several comments ago, keeps her/his promise to never return to the island or Coral Sands Hotel.

We just got back from 4 days in Harbour Island staying at Coral Sands and miss it already. Great service, clean accommodations, beautiful setting. They have excellent breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well. Everyone is very helpful from the time you arrive until the time you leave. Can't wait to go again.

The stunning location and infrastructure should ensure a world class experience; however pictures can be deceiving, as can the mostly positive reviews on travel sites.

The rooms in the main building where we stayed were at best three stars. Management told our group if we wanted better than economy travel, then the beach house was available for two nights, for a budget-blowing rate of $2,000 per night.

The aging décor, ill-maintained and dirty rooms and common spaces could have been overcome by ingratiating service from the staff. Both management and the majority of those we came in contact with at the Coral Sands failed on this front. As guests we found ourselves from breakfast to the last drink of the evening walking on eggshells around the staff. The Caribbean on balance has a reputation for less than world class service; however what we experienced at the Coral Sands took the prize for how not to treat paying guests.

Having traveled all over the world to many wonderful locations it was apparent that the Coral Sands has a leadership problem. If not due to its location on one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, and spill over demand from other fully booked properties, then this aging hotel would be in peril.

We have traveled to Harbour Island many times over the years, and believe the island is one of the world’s special places. Do yourself a favor and stay at The Dunmore, Runaway Hill, The Rock House or rent one of the many wonderful homes available on the island.

Until present management is changed, the staff refocused, the property cleaned up, and the guest experience is elevated to the top priority, we see no need to return to the Coral Sands for even lunch, let alone to vacation.

Spent four days at the Coral Sands on Harbor Island in the Bahamas. Don't confuse it with the absurd Atlantis hotel on a DIFFERENT island in this water-bound nation. I've always preferred the South Pacific (Tahitian islands) for my tropical Eden, but this hotel on this island is now a strong contender for my get-away dollars.

GM Pamela Berry is a star at this low-key, but very exclusive property with cartoonishly perfect pink beaches. The town and this property are both rich in something most beach places lack: a rich feel of history aka patina which feeds the soul as the body is nourished by delicious meals, ocean vistas, super staff, lush tropical grounds, and the knock-out lovely, tiny town a ten minute walk away. OK, maybe there are a few too many roosters running around this island, but they fit in with its sleepy, lost-in-time magic.

The Bahamian locals are great: proud of their independence and happy to welcome you. BUT, leave your "I'm a rich-guy" 'tude at home. No one wants it, here or anywhere else.

Can't wait to go back!!!

While I haven't stayed at every Harbour Island property, we did visit several during our recent stay. And, while I'm sure you could point to another hotel with better food or better lounge chairs/etc., I would award this property with the high school superlative of "best all around." Especially if you're traveling as a family, Coral Sands is a warm place where the staff is kind, the food is good, the rooms are well appointed, and there is enough activity but not too much stimulation. Our master suite was very nice, and despite the fact you can get better views on the property (we were in the Lucaya building), we still had a nice view from our balcony. We would have enjoyed a fitness center, but we knew before we came that we would be going without. Within an hour of being on the property, I knew it was well run because one of the male workers (who brought our luggage to our room) heard me ask when the grocery store closed, and we were only 30 minutes from that time. With a one year-old, we really needed milk and some basics, so he told us how to get there in our golf cart. I thanked him and went back to tell my husband (we had just gotten there so we weren't yet acquainted with the island layout), and before my husband could rush out, Conrad was back, telling us that his supervisor had given him permission to escort us into town to ensure we found the way and got what we needed. Wow--that is service. Then on our first day, we had three requests of items in the room that were needed or broken. All were taken care of immediately. The good service continued, and we felt very welcome throughout our stay. Our favorite restaurant for lunch was Sip Sip and The Landing for dinner. Rock House was good but seemed more style over substance. The island is charming, and going to the bakery and running errands in our golf cart every day was a treat. As for Coral Sands, I don't have any real suggestions, though I would encourage guests not to start "saving" lounge chairs. We started to see this toward the end of our stay, and Harbour Island should not be a place where this practice occurs--it's better than that.

This was not our first trip to the island but it was our first stay at this hotel. We were welcomed upon our arrival with champagne and the staff were warm and friendly.

We had our first meal here and it was lovely, lunch is also good and the view is unbeatable.
The property is beautifully situated and a short beach walk away from our favorite lunch spot Sip Sip. It is also close to the Pink Sands Blue Bar a few steps down the beach they are right next door.

We stayed in the two bedroom villa. It is well appointed for couples traveling together including each bedroom with its own A/C unit and control. Anyone who has ever traveled with others knows this is a huge plus.

I must say the sand here is by far the softest and the beach the cleanest I have ever seen. Our travel companions noted the same and combined we have seen most beaches abroad and in the states.

The property has a low key vibe even though the surroundings suggest a more formal atmosphere.

We spent a good deal of time in the main house having Terrace Coffee from the bar and relaxing as we were fortunate enough to see this property on a rainy day as well as a cold one in addition to a few beautiful warm beach days. SO that answers anyones question does the Bahamas have a winter, They do! It was 65 degrees one day we were there and with the wind felt a lot cooler.

The manager arranged for our fishing trip and we had a wonderful time with Mr. Fox (Ocean Fox Fishing) we caught yellow fin tuna that was prepared for our dinner that evening at Aquapazza in the Marina. It was amazing!

I gave the resort a "very good" rating because of a few minor details, the beach sports hut only had one paddle board and it was taken everyday it would serve the hotel to have more than one, also the beach lounge chairs are low grade nothing special they have no cushions or pillows and the beachside drink service is lacking we were only approached one time during our entire stay. That said we really didn't miss it as the bar is located near by and it was a quick back and forth but it would have been nice and we certainly would have eaten and drank more.

Room Tip: We did not view any rooms during our stay, we were in the two bedroom beach villa so can not give re...
