Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort & Villas
Ranked #1 of 5 Hotels in Long Island
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 11 April 2014

Long Island is not exactly a party-animal destination in the Bahamas and Cape Santa Maria Resort, located at the north-west end of the island, is some miles removed even from what major settlements do exist. Therefore it is perfect for couples or groups whose objective is to spend some quiet time in comfort while enjoying sand, sea and wonderful Bahamas hospitality.

The resort has been around for some years but is being maintained to perfection by the current owners. Paint is fresh, rooms spotless and you will note nice little extra touches like door closers that insure you won't be disturbed by banging screen doors. No ill-fitting doors, balky plumbing or wheezing air-contitioners here!

Accomodations consist of bungalow style duplexes with roomy air-conditioned bedrooms with large screened porch areas for enjoying the breezes. Another option for families or two-couple parties would be one of their two-bedroom villas with housekeeping facilities. All units front onto a very nice beach of fine white sand lined with plenty of beach chairs, umbrellas & cabanas.

Centerpiece of the resort is a 2-story building housing the office/reception area, bar and dining room, plus a small sundries store, TV room and an exercise room. The bar and restaurant are pretty much the extent of night-life for the surrounding area and are popular with local residents as well as guests. Food is excellent and well-prepared, although as everywhere in the Bahamas is served at a leasurly pace, so the wonderful view from the second-foor dining room is a big plus while you await the next course of your meal. Most guests opt for one of the meal plans, offering either 3 meals or just breakfast + dinner.

While kick-back relaxing is a big passtime, there are other activites available. Fishing expeditions and snorkle/picnic trips, SCUBA outings and escorted island land tours are all offered, as are rental cars for island exploring and bicycles for local rides.

For keeping in touch there is good free wi-fi in the main building area, cell coverage is also good but roaming rates are a little pricey.

On the subject of prices, the Bahamas are not cheap anywhere and while Cape Santa Maria isn't at the high end of the scale our 5 day/4 night April 2014 stay, all inclusive of food, a moderate amount of booze at the bar, taxes, etc. came to $498 per night for the two of us. Not bad, we felt, for a getaway to paradise.

A final note for private pilots: Only a few hundred yards from the resort, the Cape Santa Maria airstrip, previously designated MYLM but apparently no longer "offically" listed, is still in use and the resort will send a ride. Surface is primarily hard coral, graded relatively smooth, with about 2300 feet usable. If off-pavement is not your bag, the primary customs & fuel airport, Stella Maris, is only about 9 miles southeast.

Amazing beach!! This is a real paradise! Beautiful beach with calm and clear turquoise water, no crowd, you will not regret to stay in Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort.

There are few improvements needed - hygienic in the restaurant, we saw cockroach running around on the floor in the restaurant, and we never want to eat in the restaurant again. The bath tub get flooded when showering, so that can be annoying.

Thank you for your review of Cape Santa Maria. We are delighted you enjoyed the beach and tranquility of the resort. Being in the Caribbean nestled between mangroves, tropical trees and an amazing beach can certainly create challenges when it comes to insects. The moist tropical climate that makes for lush flowers, mango trees, coconut trees and bananas also creates an ideal ecosystem for insects.

We take cleanliness very seriously throughout Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort. The kitchen, dining room and bar area are cleaned multiple times daily with a thorough deep cleaning and eco-friendly treatment for insects on a monthly schedule.

We appreciate your comments and hope to see you again soon.

We have been coming to this laid back resort for approx. 10 years and always enjoy its family resort feeling. We travel extensively throughout the Bahamas every winter and find that with Cape Santa Maria's positive aspects it seems to be time for some sprucing up of the rooms. The 21st century has even arrived in the Bahamas and perhaps it's time to equip the rooms with At least TVs and maybe even WiFi for Internet service.

On this trip we noticed that some of the staff was really great but some were downright surly. There seems to be a lack of management to oversee the way in which he staff interacts with guests.

Having said all this, we do like this resort and hope that perhaps some improvement might be forthcoming.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review our resort. We truly value our guests and their opinions and we apologize that your expectations were not met during your most recent stay. We appreciate that you are a repeat guest and welcome the opportunity to speak with you directly regarding your concerns during your next visit to Cape Santa Maria. We truly believe that Cape Santa Maria is a resort like no other, from the beauty of our powder like sand beaches and turquoise water to our engaging staff. We are often told from repeat guests that one of the reasons they return is because of our friendly and accommodating staff. We have frequent training sessions where we stress customer service and we welcome any constructive criticism that we can incorporate into our training. Thank you again for that opportunity.

Regarding the issue of internet service and television in our bungalows we again appreciate your remarks and suggestions. We do offer both internet and television in our villas as well as our beach house while our bungalows remain charmingly low-key. We are presently exploring the idea of extending internet service to the bungalows although we have had many guests comment that they actually welcome the lack of technology as it gives them an opportunity to unwind and unplug during their vacation with us.

Thank you once more for your review and we hope to see you again very soon at Cape Santa Maria Beach Resort and Villas.

this not so big resort on beautiful long island is perfect for a short vacation or for honeymooners.
fantastic beach, wonderful water. the beach villas are big and close to the ocean. a little renovation would make them 100% perfect. no tv, no phone in the villas -who needs that there?
the staff is very well trained by the very friendly managers neal and wanda. all the employees
are very good: Starline, Shenique at the reception desk and the waiters ericka, kelly and more.
the breakfast is excellent, the dinner is average, the winelist is great and the wines are affordable.
visit by boat the wonderful sandy cay and enjoy the picnic and do not miss to see the unique
blue hole - that's a 30min trip by car. this island is one of a kind. not overcrowded, peaceful with a wonderful climate.
we come back, no doubt about that!

A little off the beaten path, and worth it. We rented half a bungalow, which had two bedrooms and a screened-in patio. The second bedroom connects through the first bedroom, costs extra, and the bath is shared. All bungalows and villas are right on the absolutely gorgeous white pristine beach that arcs around Cape Santa Maria, named by Christoforo Columbo in 1492, reportedly his third port of call in the New World. The bungalows are simple and very clean...perfect for a casual beach retreat. Very quiet when we were there. Not a party place. At night the stars are bright and the only sounds are the waves lapping the shore. There's a main building with desk, shop, bar and restaurant. We purchased the modified meal plan and had breakfast and dinner every day at the resort. Meals were very good, and the staff was always eager to assist. Sunday morning I got the idea to go to one of the many churches on Long Island, and decided to walk to a 7:00 am service. I misjudged the distance, and at almost 7 I was still walking down a dirt road. I decided to give it up, when a van from the resort pulled up and offered me a ride to church. A worker going up to the resort had seen me hiking, and they sent out the rescue van! What lovely people. I peeked into the villas on the property...more upscale, larger rooms, full kitchens, and full service extras available. Loved the nightly cocktail hour with special island drinks and conch fritters. Thank you to the managers, Neal and Wanda, for all your courtesies.

Must warn, however....this is not an easy commute. The flights to & from Nassau on JetBlue were great, but Nassau customs is slow, and both our connecting flights with Southern Air had serious problems. Leave LOTS of time between flights. If you can find a way to get there and NOT take Southern Air, do it.

Room Tip: All the rooms are right on the beach.

If you are looking for a party, this place is not for you, but if you are dreaming of a pristine powdery white sand beach with turquoise warm water for as far as you can see, delicious food, sweet welcoming staff and a rest, go there now. It is really beautiful, you can walk for miles in either direction and never meet another soul.

Also, the conch fritters at happy hour everyday also added greatly to the trip! They have a happy hour from 5-6 pm with drink specials and those amazing fritters. The waitress knew how much we loved them and would bring us extra.

We also rented a car one day to go see Dean's Blue Hole and the Hamilton Caves with Leonard, and that was no hassle. The "towns" on Long Island are about 5-6 buildings each, just long stretches of road with beautiful unspoiled land and sea everywhere. I think all the folks on the island hope it stays this way, and with a place like Cape Santa Maria, you don't need a whole lot more in terms of resorts.

The rooms are pretty standard for the Caribbean, kinda old-school in a nice way, all wicker and tile. This is not a "boutique" hotel with fancy shampoo, but it is nice and clean and has everything you need. The biggest plus is the wonderful staff, so eager to make your stay a good one. The managers Neal and Wanda say hi all the time and genuinely want to know how things are going and how they can make it better.

Room Tip: If you want quiet, which they all are really, but ask for a bungalow farther away from the restauran...

My wife and I wanted a beach getaway with private to semi private beach. But the prices for that were outrageous everywhere else we looked. I luckily found some old yahoo answers page where a travel agent gave this place as an answer. This place for price and what you get is an amazing value. You get a "bungalow" right on the beach with hot water, air conditionoing, screened porch with fan, and comfortable bed. There is so much beach and so few people you never feel on top of people at all. You honestly get the private beach experience, you don't have to socialize with anyone if you don't want. However one thing that is not an amazing value is the restaurant prices, car rental, or gift shop. But all this worth it for the beach.

Keep in mind is that you need to take another flight from Nassau to Long Island. The last flight to the island leaves Nassau at 2pm. We missed our connecting flight on the first day. Next time I would not get a flight that lands in Nassau around 12pm since that is when the airport is the most crowded. We got held up in the customs line for at least an hour and a half.
