We staying 4 nights at this resort along with another couple traveling with us. I'd have to say my impression of the resort was that the food was excellant, the rooms and grounds were very clean (except for 1 of the 3 pools which needed a cleaning), the staff over-all was nice (the owners were very, very nice), everything was quite laid-back and relaxing. We took advantage of their free boat excursion, which was a blast. We were gone 5 hours, snorkeled at 4 different locations, saw a humpback whale, many fish and birds and beautiful scenery. One day we had a car rented to tour the island, but due to a mix-up our car was rented to another party. But not to worry, the owner of the resort got us a van for the same price, and our day proceeded with a visit to Cape Santa Maria, dined at Two Sisters restaurant in Burnt Ground (food was local Bahamian and very good), drove south toward Clarence Town and stopped at Max's Conch Bar where we had conch salad that was quite delicious, and tried to find Dean's Blue Hole. Be aware the signs on the island are few and far between or non-existant. The resort threw a cave party one night and served a huge meal in this cave, down a steep trail, complete with a bar and "Rak N' Scrape" band. All by torch light. It was alot of fun. We enjoyed our stay at the resort and would recommend it for a beautiful relaxing vacation.

My wife and I booked a honeymoon package stay at Stella Maris from December 22, 2008 through December 28, 2008. The resort and beautiful Long Island exceeded our hopes in every regard. The grounds are very nice. Our cottage was spacious, had a lovely view of the Atlantic side of the island and had a brand new, very modern and lovely bathroom. The resort is run by a very pleasant family from Germany. The resort's manager, Karen (who is the daughter of the owner) was very friendly and did an outstanding job of satisfying our requests concerning excursions throughout the island. We ate nearly every meal but three at the resort and the food was as fresh as any we have ever had and was simply delicious. While the resort is on the rocky Atlantic side, every day complimentary excursions were scheduled to nearby beaches including the breathtaking Cape Santa Maria. Our resort coordinated activities included a day of bonefishing which was expertly handled by Alvin, one of Long Island's best guides. We also were shuttled to the north end of the island for a full day of kayaking out through several semi sheltered bays to the beach at the point where the Columbus Monument is located. This was one of our favorite days as the view from the Columbus Monument is stunning and kayaking the approximate mile or two to the monument is a very nice kayak with only two semi strenuous points if the wind is blowing as it was on Christmas Day when we made the trip.

The owners of the resort LOVE to throw rum punch parties and there were 3 such parties during our six day stay (though this was likely due to the Christmas holiday). Several nights, the resort also featured excellent buffets with generous serving of many, many local and traditional delicacies. Several excellent local musicians played at the rum punch parties.

Long Island itself is a wondrous island with dozens of postcard perfect beaches. We were told that the people of Long Island are the friendliest in the Caribbean. We do slightly disagree with this point. Most of the local people we met (with the exception of our fishing guide, Alvin, who was extremely friendly and outgoing) were reserved and not nearly as friendly as the local people we met in Anguilla.

However, Long Island is one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean (far more beautiful than Anguilla, despite its terrific beaches) with amazing, uncrowded beaches, terrific bonefishing and a feeling of having gone back in time 40 years due to the quiet, unrushed nature of the island. We had a few excellent meals at other places, Rowdy Boys in Clarence Town was good for lunch, Max's Conch in Deadman's Cay was every bit as good as the hype it receives from other travelers and the brand new Long Island Breeze in Salt Pond was good for dinner. However, Stella Maris's culinary offerings at breakfast, lunch and dinner were by far the best meals we ate on Long Island.

In summary, we cannot say enough good things about Stella Maris and wonderful Long Island. We fear posting this rave review at the risk that Long Island/Stella Maris become the next "big thing" in the Caribbean and lose their sleepy, wholly genuine charm. However, when a resort/destination are as wonderful as Stella Maris and Long Island, it seems selfish to try and keep them a secret.

Thanks to Stella Maris for an incomparable honeymoon! We will be back as soon as we can.

My husband and I spent 6 nights at this hotel for our honeymoon in October of 2008. We never could have imagined the wonderful time we ended up having!

We spent a total of 2 weeks in the Bahamas, with 6 of those nights at this hotel, and while it was supposed to be the hurricane/rainy season, we had PERFECT weather! It rained for only 10 minutes throughout those 2 weeks, and there were no hurricane threats. We did, however, have 2 days of very windy weather. It was still warm, though. Please don't let the low season scare you. The weather is still beautiful and hot, there are less crowds and no waits, and you get catered to more since there aren't as many visitors!

We took a Bahamas Air flight to the island. The resort had arranged for their driver to pick us up. He was a WONDERFULLY friendly man. It cost $9 to get from the Stella Maris airport to their resort. Once there, Karen (a super delightful lady!) met us at the entry way and escorted us to our room. They had fresh flowers, free t-shirts, a bottle of champagne, 2 free cocktail vouchers, free bottle of gin and coconut water, and a welcome note waiting for us honeymooners!

We stayed in a basic hotel room-room #14. It was a corner room on the second level, and it had a MAGNIFICENT view of the perfectly manicured grounds and the ocean. We spent many hours on our balcony watching the full moon over the waves of the ocean. However, if you are someone who CANNOT live without a t.v. or internet access, this place is not for you. My husband is a Computer Systems Administrator, and was constantly trying to get onto their internet access. It would work for about 1 minute each day. The issue is that they get their internet through a satellite, and it seemed that the SLIGHTEST bit of wind knocked out both the internet AND the television. Even the t.v. in the bar/lounge wouldn't work. We didn't mind, since we're very laid back and really were only there to relax and enjoy our honeymoon. But there were some people there who couldn't deal with no t.v. and internet.

The lounge area has a pool table, sitting area, bar, and foose ball table. There is a tiny boutique you can shop at, but they don't have much, and the prices are SUPER high! There are also 3 pools throughout the resort. The biggest pool is over by the Moonshine Bar-which is over by the beach. It was very relaxing over there! We laid in a hammock on the beach and watched the waves crash on the rocks.

We were worried about staying at such a secluded resort in case the food was terrible. There really wouldn't be anywhere else to eat! However, we were pleasantly surprised! The meals were delicious, the staff was so friendly, and the menu always changed. I had fresh grouper with a chablis sauce that was to die for, and my husband and I both adored the Bahamian crawfish with garlic butter and lime! Yum! We also recommend the BLT's and cheeseburgers for lunch. Breakfast had the standard offerings. We LOVED that each night at dinner they would have something special from the island for us to try for free. One time there were government plums, then there were spanish limes, fresh sugar cane dipped in dark rum, then fresh bananas grilled and wrapped with bacon! Budget about $120-$150 per day for 2 people total for food. More if you intend to drink a lot (we usually had pop, juice, or water, with only the occasional cocktail). Also, please note that they enforce eating times. Breakfast is only served from 7:30-10:00, lunch from 12:00-2:00, dinner from 7:00-8:00, and snacks are served at the bar from 11:00-7:00.

Take advantage of the free excursions. Cape Santa Maria beach was the most beautiful we'd ever seen (it's rated one of the 10 nicest beaches in the world!), and we went twice. Both times Karen packed us delicious BLT's, water, and gatorades in a cooler for us to take to the beach. Then their driver takes you there in the van and picks you up at a certain time you confirm with them. We also went on a full-day boat cruise and went snorkeling in the open ocean (we aren't certified divers yet, but the others with us went diving and said it was spectacular and better than the Great Barrier Reef!). We saw spotted eagle rays, reef sharks, a puffer fish, parrot fish, angel fish, and a BILLION other colorful fishies! It was superb!

The highlight for me was the free Rum Punch Party. They give you free conch fritters (sea shell meat rolled in batter and deep fried and served with pink sauce)-very popular in the Bahamas! They also make fresh rum punch and serve it to everyone. Then they make a fire outside and we all sit around it and eat, drink, talk with the other guests-and listen to a local musician sing and play on his acoustic guitar. He had such a great voice! Afterwards we all came inside for a huge buffet.

We really found that there was a family mentality at this place. There are no locks on the doors, and they said they have no crime on the island, and the island prison has never had anyone in it! The people here are so warm and friendly, and they really bent over backwards for the guests. Nothing was too much trouble. Being that we went in the low season, we were 2 of 11 guests at the ENTIRE resort-and had superb service.

We almost cried when we had to leave. I've never taken so many pictures in all my life. This island is GORGEOUS! I hated leaving this place and all the wonderful new friends we made! When you go, say hello to Karen, Nils, Janet, Shaun, and the entire gang!

We will be back! :)

We had a wonderful time at Stella Maris Resort. It was not really busy and so had the place to ourselves. Everyone who worked there was super nice and anything we needed they were able to accomodate us. The most enjoyable day was going bone fishing with our guide, Dockey. We caught so many fish and these fish are hard to catch. We also tried scuba diving and snorkeling and saw many beautiful fish on the reefs. We went right before hurricane season so had to leave one day early which we were sad about, but we will come back another time.

Stella Maris Resort, Long Island

Just back from Stella Maris on Long Island for my daughter’s wedding and we could not have had a better time. If you are looking for an out-island, Long Island is it.

At the north end of the island, you have choice between Resort Santa Maria and Stella Maris Resort. Santa Maria is on the calm, gorgeous Caribbean leeward side; Stella Maris on the more active gorgeous windward Atlantic side.

At Stella Maris, there is a small but beautiful Atlantic side beach. Everyday though they also run buses to the Caribbean side and to farther away beaches for super snorkeling and spots for Kayaking. Also boat trips are ofered – all included with the price of the room or cottage. So there is lots to pick and choose to do.

The folks at Stella Maris were wonderful, the accommodations super. If you have enough people, try the 4 br Delphin House with its swimming pool and Atlantic pool.

The folks at Stella Maris helped to arrange and facilitate a beautiful wedding for my daughter. The staff starting with Jill the wedding Coordinator down to the maids were friendly and catered to your every wish. We had a 5-star experience there and we hope you do too.

I'm writing this review while my kitchen table is covered in wonderful shells. It's been four days since we checked out of Stella Maris Resort and left Long Island and its beautiful locals. My son and I now have the Stella Maris Blues.

This was our first trip out of Canada and I was terrified of making such a journey alone as a female with my 8 year old son. I researched everything and read both Frommers and Lonely Planet guides from front to back. Long Island held my interest for reasons I can't explain. We wanted an adventure, not a crowded all inclusive . Stella Maris Resort is a place you check in to but - as we've both found out - be warned a piece of you will remain there. It is nestled within lush coconut palms, cacti, flowers I can't begin to name with views of the ocean below. There are beaches to explore, pools to discover, plantation ruins to meander through. There are daily excursions you can join and always a smiling face to answer any questions.

The people of Long Island are warm, kind and genuine. When you live in a city where people often forget to say please & thank you - trust me, it will humble you. My son had the "best time ever." Everyone was wonderful... Peter, who took us up to the plantation and assisted us with "research", Karen who made sure we were well equipped for each day, all of the lovely ladies at the front desk & restaurant - especially those who slipped us an extra freshly baked bun at dinner, Scoffield our taxi-man who told us about this beautiful island, the kind gentleman who de-husked a coconut for my son, Shawn (my first banana daquiri) & Matthew our very patient guide as we attempted snorkeling, the marine life we saw was amazing. The list goes on...

What you need to know is that you will feel absolutely safe here. The rooms are large and clean and offer a great cross breeze at night. Honestly you wont be spending much time in them as there is a ton to discover. There is a funky pub and terrific restaurant. The prices are reasonable and the water was fine to drink. The owners and staff truly make you feel like you are family. They will take you on free excursions to several beaches (including Cape Santa Maria) and other places of interest. We met several people who were returning after multiple years and I think that really speaks to the way Stella Maris treats its guests.

In my son's words to his grandmother upon return:

"Gramma, you don't even know the colour blue until you've been to Long Island and the people are really nice."

We are planning to return soon.

I wrote a previous review and now upon reconsideration and hindsight I wish to share some thoughts. The hotel staff treated us like family. They were considerate and thoughtfull. You have to remember that this is a out island and not a big money resort. The owner Peter was always around to assist us in anything we wanted or needed. It was truely one of the best vacations we have ever gone on. Our main mode of transportation was by bicycle. 20 miles per day and walking deserted roads and Beaches 4-8 more miles. There was Kayaking,Sailing and boat rides to be held but if you wish to be left alone for a romantic reconect then you should go and try out this resort.
